necturus (mud puppy) one of several salamander species that live in new york.  they are one of the species of salamander that does not regularly enter its full adult form. most spiecies shed there gills and become a more terrestial species but a few like necturus and axolotls keep there gills throughout there life and live fully aquatic.  they are preditory and have a supprising number of teeth.  they are also common prey of fish like Pike and i would not be supprised for large lake trout.
