Dunkirk, 7/12 and 7/13

Recommended Posts

Fished the Ameracan Walleye Derby this weekend out of Dunkirk.

Saturday, got a 7+ lb fish right off the bat at the numbers we had

from Tuesday...figured alright! Here we go.... Well, over the next

2 hrs we only put in three more small ones, and the screen wasn't good,

so my team opted to make a major move and run to the border. Water

out there was a lot warmer, blank screen. So we pointed her right at the

stacks and just started trolling back. Added 3 more walleye, and boxed

out for 5 fish at just over 23lbs. One more big one would have helped

for sure. 10 color with a big hatchet was good. 160 wire diver with

DW chicken wing, and a small slide off the boards at 210 back with a

small watermelon fishlander was out best. Very hot, and the flies were

the worst I can ever remember. They even were biting thru the socks!

Sunday was blowing and raining early, so we opted to head west just

past Van Buren Point. Had a friend take 20 fish in there on Sat. SO

we go 2 right off the bat, 1 on the 10 color/hatchet combo, and 1 on

1 165 slide diver with a "confusion" harness. Could not find any

big guys, so with a deadline of 2 pm, and looking at 11:30 already, we

opted to move into see if we could at least get a few more for the freezer.

And of course popped an 8lb clearing lines to move!

Did 3 more fish inside, 1 on a 40 jet, and a couple more on the 10 color.

Lost 2 on the rigs, and several others off the boards. Watermelon

harnesses were the best, as well as an orange willowleaf, and of course

a big hatchet blade off the core.

It seemed like the fish in the side water were a different year class. All

4-5 lbs.

Down speed 1.9-2.1 on a DR.

Came in yesterday on solid 5 footers!

Unofficially ended up in 26th place out of over 100 boats. Really could

have been helped by at least 1 more big guy each day.

it was a tough tourney for us. saturday the flies.....sunday the waves and a slow pick thru out. had the late shift sat. and only 4 in the box at 4:15 when the dipsy went at we brought in our best one at just over 8 lbs. we were straight out front in 80 f.o.w. a very lucky brek as that fish gave us just under 28lbs. and made sunday still interesting. didn't matter ended up with a 7 pounder and 2 small ones yesterday. didn't bother weighing in. oh well.....still alot of fun and theres always next year.
