Gambler or anyone else who uses leadcore,

What reel are you getting 10 colors on with 40 lb powerpro backing?

I just tried to get 300 feet of 65 lb powerpro( 16 lb diameter I use for muskies ) and I could only get 4 colors on. Back to the drawing board. Im trying to put it on a Penn321. This is starting to tick me off, I cant seem to get it right.

How much backing is necessary with 10 colors? Am I out of whack thinking I need 300 feet of backing? That would be 600 feet total. Thanks BP

use 30 lb PP it has a super small diameter, when using leadcore basically dont think of the leadcore as line your fighting th fish with because thats all in the water already think of your backing as the line your fighting the fish on, some people see the full spool with the core and think all that line but your backing is your saftey net its up to you to choose how much saftey you want, me I use 2-300 yards of braid backing

So basically you need an ocean size reel to hold 10 colors and 250 yards of backing. My Penn 321 is no where near big enough. Some of the reels mentioned in previous posts are gigantic. Thats a tough pill to swallow for a ultra light specialist like myself. I may ditch the whole lead core idea. Thanks for your replys. BP

do yourself a HUGE favor and bite the bullet and get a couple lead/copper setups you will put alot more fish in the boat..you can tell the guys who use lead and copper setups, they will generally always have more fish then guys not using them,,

c star,

whats the difference between copper and ss wire? Im working on putting together a wire rig.

Nobody makes a left hand line counter big enough for 10 colors and 250 yards of backing so a lead core might be out. Thanks BP

traveling man is right, for lead core a big fat reel is all thats needed. you all ready have a gauge of how far out you are by counting colors. If you go past the knot, you can get a rough idea by counting "passes" of the line guide on the reel.

My problem is nobody makes a reel big enough even without the counter for Leftys. size 30 is as big as there is (Penn, Cabelas, Okuma). for left handed.

Any tackle manufacturers listening?

huge diference between wire and copper is they are used totally for differnt purposes, wire is used for dipseys etc, and copper is used exactly as lead core only thing is its a little heavier so it gets down slightly deeper, copper and leadcore are used the same way. wire line is used on dipsey rods the same as braided line to get you a little deeper
