Third Trip to Ontario

BW, If you have problems getting fleas off you lines try reeling them up until they are about 8-10 ft away from your rod tip, put rod tip in the water then whip it straight up and out of the water. They'll be cut right off. But be careful that the lure is not to close or it'll jump at you. Some guys smack the surface with the rod tip, but I'm always afraid of breaking the tip. Tom B. I used to think something was wrong with my unit as it does that this time every year. After I had it checked out, I realized that local currents go all over the place and: This time of year, it issue goes away when I clear the seaweed/fleas off the cable & head north. Tom B. (LongLine)

Third Trip to Ontario

BW, If what you're doing works well for you, why change? Wire is another weapon in the arsenal. It helps with fleas & the hit will be more "vicious" as it doesn't stretch. If you can get down with no problem & have no problem with releases, hookups or fleas.... Yes downspeed matters. With/across/against currents will often yield different results. Somedays you can't buy a bite in one direction. As to currents, don't be surprised if when you're hardly moving, the cables are out at 45 degrees. Personally, I like to go across the current for best speed control. Tom B. (LongLine) -

Yes. Salmon use baitfish, temperature and currents as their "structure." When you run into them, try to observe what else is going on in that area. Tom B. (LongLine) -

Fishing Report: LongLine Launched by 5:30. Clear sky. Good S wind. Headed west & out to 135FOW where I setup on top of this: Took the northern path and got this chunker at 105 over 200FOW. (9Lb Coho) Then this guy at 80 over 250FOW. (11 Lb stlhd) Kept going N, out to 335FOW and back in to 200 running into 5 of these guys along the way: 3 of the five had their adipose fins. (wild fish) Everything caught on DWSS Bloody D’th & NK28 purple spook, short leads run clean on the riggers. Thermocline setting up but very narrow. Standing still, the 105 rigg’r was in 48F. At 2 1/4 mph it was in 58F. Beautiful morning on the lake. Off at 11:00. Maybe a dozen trailers at the launch. Luck to all, Tom B. (LongLine)

Just a reminder - NYS regulations: 1 fish daily limit. 25" minimum. Slightly forked tail, white mouth, Two rows of poorly developed teeth top of mouth I don't & won't "preach" C & R, but when I'm lucky enough to get 1, it's going back, after a couple photos. Tom B. (LongLine) Keep up the great work John. You guys have done lot of good for the fishery.

Irondequoit Bay fishing / fishing in Rochester
LongLine replied to staretoolong's topic in Open Lake Discussion
stl - welcome to the site. I-Bay has quite a channel that can be fished from. Also there's a public place on the southwest side near the old dirt launch. But both are pretty shallow. On the River, there's obviously the piers & the state site just south of the CG station. Also Maplewood, Seth Green drive and Turning Point (end of Boxart st) H.I.H. Good luck Tom B. (LongLine) -
Another definitely worth mentioning is Hank (L&M) Tom B. (LongLine)

Downrigger/ stacker questions
LongLine replied to Gman315's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
Try 3 spoons & 1 flasher'fly. 1 of the spoons on other rigger 15-20 ft behind and 6-12 ft deeper than the flasher/fly. Tom B. (LongLine) -
BW - Fishing does not necessarily fall off. I generally call it quits around noon because: Pleasure boaters crowd the ramp; wind picks up; I'm tired; sun begins to get to me, etc - i.e. more of a preference/age type thing. Most charters consider an 8 hr as a full charter and the time is up or go in to get the 2nd charter of the day. As for leads, deeper usually means shorter. Also while watching sonar, if you see streaking close to the ball, shorten them up. Tom B. (LongLine)

r b - CG will come out if you're life is in danger, otherwise standard procedure is to ask for "all vessels in vicinity to keep a lookout & render assistance." Also - CG motorboats all have machine gun mounts W/ weapons out of sight. Back when Fast Fairy pulled out, CG escorted it from dock with rifles unslung and border patrol was around. (I remember "fondly" being told to sit on launch dock until it left - at rifle point) Tom B. (LongLine)

Welcome to the site gmcdp. (What's that stand for anyway?) Relaxing & enjoying time w/ family are extremely important nowdays. Tom B. (LongLine)

I believe coast guard & border patrol are under same agency (correct me if I'm wrong). I have no problem being checked/boarded by any law enforcement on the lake. (before or after I catch a big fish - not during the battle) Stories of H.S. boardings prove that the Lake is a border that the Feds believe needs active patrolling and as such also shows one more way how "un-smart" NYPA is for wanting to put X% of NYS power generation out in it.
