sub troll still not working
LongLine replied to smaltcody's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
As long as you have the dot on the display, the power head should be ok. Power does have a direct path to the battery right? and not thru any boat electronics terminals? Like above, I'm guessing a connection. Paddle wheel rotates freely? Coated cable? When you unscrew the cap, you don't have any water coming out do you? New battery? If you've gone thru everything in the manual, you might want to call moor electronics. www.moorelectronics.com Tom B. (LongLine) -

New Proposed Law Will Cripple Boating and Fishing in NY
LongLine replied to ArneysMarina's topic in Open Lake Discussion
http://www.justia.com/injury/boat-accidents/ http://www.boattest.com/resources/view_ ... ?NewsID=76 http://www.boatsafe.com/nauticalknowhow/1998stats.htm http://www.articlesbase.com/personal-in ... 44472.html http://www.uscgboating.org/assets/1/Pub ... s_2008.pdf Interestingly NYS has DUI & DWI laws for autos but only has DWI for boating. Perhaps Boating should have an “open container law†for boating just like autos have? i.e you can’t have alcohol on board if it’s intended for onboard consumption. Nahh, that wouldn’t work, there’d probably be a trail of beer cans in the water from the Niagara to Henderson, whenever the CG came out. Interesting also is a point everyone seems to be missing and that is for an auto license you’re required to pass a written exam and a road test. Boating course doesn’t require the “road†test, rather they assume you already know how to launch, drive & handle a boat. Seems to me that issues with driving, handling and just paying attention when operating the boat cause the most accidents, not whether I know “Red-Right-Returning.†I don’t think I’ve ever heard another boat blow his horn thus indicating his intention. I take that back…I heard the Stephen B. Roman blow his horn once…but I think he was saying “get the “F†out’a my way!" On a related issue: My hats off to the sailing school every Saturday morning on the Genny for teaching the junior ragboaters how to handle their small craft. Unfortunately, they’re also teaching them how to jam up the entire channel so other boats can’t get through. Tom B. (LongLine) -

Forever Young I BAY 4-7 report
LongLine replied to Mortigan's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
I always look at the tail first, then the anal fin, then the mouth. “Black mouth†is misleading as I’ve never known “how black is blackâ€. There are many shades of black from pitch black to charcoal. This guy’s anal fin is a dead giveaway. The King is the only one with an anal fin like this. It's much longer than it is high. http://www.seagrant.sunysb.edu/glsportf ... io2012.pdf Tom B. For anyone having doubts about Fish ID, Sea Grant has issued a new guide to Big-O fish Identification. It has them all side by side and includes Lake phase,Stream phase and what the “little ones†look like (smolt & parr) http://www.seagrant.sunysb.edu/glsportf ... io2012.pdf Tom B. (LongLine)

Boat safety is a good thing, however they were sure to include a paragraph about fees which I think is just a money grab. If enacted, it should apply to all boats, not just motor boats. That exclusion for small boats or electrics is pure bull. Tom B. (LongLine) -
The only way i could get the tube back in on my little merc was to pull the side cover off and have my son guide it in with a hooked wire. I tried to push it in place first but then getting it into the pump was a pain. Tom B. (LongLine)

New to trolling: had some basic questions
LongLine replied to WNY Tony's topic in Tackle and Techniques
I started out with a 14 ft aluminum boat with a 7.5 mercury many moons ago. I had a rigg'r mounted within my reach and would drag some silver flatfish around I-Bay outlet way before it had that bridge & channel. I was one of the few that could actually get out into the lake from I-bay. It was a blast at the crack of dawn. "Rigg'rs - don't leave home without them." Tom B. (LongLine) -
Downrigger weight question
LongLine replied to kjb7486's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
A 12 Lb torpedo will give you less blowback than a 12 lb ball. I'd advise not going any heavier than 14 on the manual rigg'r. (I run my own 14 Lb missles on manuals and it is work when you get below that 100 ft mark) Tom B. (LongLine) -

Your board is not the cause. Cord/mono could be. Mono stretches. If it still happens with the tow line then after you've let your release out, say to port, then just very slightly turn to port and the drag from the lure will pull it right out. My tow lines are usually tied off at about 42" above water line & have never had problems getting them out to the board. (50-60 ft out) One other tip, when letting them slide out, keep your rod tip high. Tom B. (LongLine)

Best Tackle for Spring Kings
LongLine replied to topeye's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
Top - In general, medium size spoons (3-31/2) & flies for salmon. They like flash. Tom B. (LongLine) -
CF - one technigue to try is to chuck that spoon as far as you can; let out slack so it settles towards bottom; keep rod tip low; reel slowly & slowly raise tip overhead; slow retrieve and lower tip to water, repeat during retrieve. This will give lure and up & down motion in the water. Works where bottom is sandy such as I-bay & Summerville. (Webster is rocky) cast perpendicular, parrallel & at 45 deg to your spot (as long as no one else is within 100 ft of you) Move 20 ft out & try again. Best to be out early. Good luck Tom B.
