  1. Simple spreads are proven to produce more fish.... For instance, I used to run 5 riggers. As the zebra mussels have cleared the water, the fish can be spooky. I switched to 3 riggers and as an average i took more rigger shots.... My theory is less cable hum in the water column. 90% of the time I run fixed or slide cheaters in order to get more lures in the strike zone. Divers- usually only one per side.... Junk lines- if it's rough- one copper or lead core ( depending on where the temp is) down the chute.... If conditions are ok ( boat traffic or waves) then I will run one on each side off Otter Boats.. Simple spreads mean less tangles, your lures are in the strike zone longer, and easier to manage if you get more than one fish on... 3. I'll through in my 2 bits... Do I think the public should foot the bill? To a degree yes..... The DEC provides the fish, transports them to the sites, and gives us the fish food. .... It's our tax dollars and license fees that indirectly do this. So now comes the real need.... Backs... Strong backs to put the pens in and take them out.., volunteers to feed the fish... Money raised by seminars, flea markets, raffles ECT... Are used for net repairs/ pen framing repairs...ect... Without the volunteers and donations, the pen projects would not exist, the fish ( kings and Steelhead) would be direct stocked and be victimized by cormorants and other predators... So...do we sacrifice a little time and sweat for a successful program ( DEC agrees), or do we go out cheap and lazy hoping the little guys can get enjoyed when they are bigger? 4. Bandrus... Your 100% correct... I've owned my Baha since brand new... OCD with keeping her up from the bilge to the hull... 3 years ago I discovered the stringers were smoked... She now has black locust stringers... Probably overkill, but will never Rot again Sent from my VS996 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  5. SMH.... This post is nauseating.... It really doesn't matter what anyone thinks is right... The DEC is going to do what they want.... It's been the same since I've started fishing 40 years ago... What else is nauseating is the fact that us lake guys are the ones volunteering time, and raising money for the Penn Rearing programs which the DEC says is a good success. I tend to agree with them. Just recently the DEC commented that the "Trib guys" get involved....now emails are out volunteering from Trib guys... SMH.... Pretty funny that guys stood around with their hands in their pockets for years, but now the DEC hints they should get involved and people are lined up.... Very telling indeed.... See all you guys in the spring. Sent from my VS996 using Lake Ontario United mobile app

  7. A lure A .... There is one other way to look at it..... Genetics... Steve LaPan has admitted that staff at the Hatchery take both large and smaller "Mature" salmon. Now I don't have a fancy college piece of paper on my wall , but I understand basic genetics... Tall people who have kids...kids tend to be tall... Two chocolate labs bred together tend to produce choc pups... In other words.... Genetics can play a big role ... I'll go on record to say I saw a ton of bait out there...cleaned a lot of kings ( all had bait in them) ... Sent from my VS996 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  8. If guys do not go to the meetings and get involved, then they shouldn't complain. Get out to one, or all of the meetings ( if possible) and show some pride in our world class fishery. Sent from my VS996 using Lake Ontario United mobile app

  10. Couple Fonzies( leather jacket wearing kings) this AM... Went out a little deeper and the warm water screwed up everything... All good.... MissD getting pulled soon.. Fellas , good luck the rest of the season and be well. Sent from my VS996 using Lake Ontario United mobile app

  13. Exactly..... I buy top notch equipment, re tie leaders , use quality terminal tackle. Big money invested.... I can't have my rigs being cracked off, or rods broken because some guy thinks he's Jimmy Houston setting the hook... If I have experienced guys out, then have at it boys....but I'm still the boss and I set out the rods, and change the rigs. I can tell in the first fish or 2 if the customers know their way around a boat. If we are on a great chew and there are kids on board, I will let them pick out a spoon to run.... 14. Lucky 13....noone can predict what Kings are going to chew on.. One day I ran a mix of spoons and meat... Meat took 90% of my fish.... Went back to the same water the next day... Ran the exact same program and the spoons got chewed...not one single meat hit. The conditions were exactly the same... Currents, temps, speed, sunny, depths..ect... So from a scientific standpoint there was no conclusion to be made ( at least not for those two particular days). My point is.... Can we accurately guess why a fish will eat one particular bait over the next ? Nope.... Only the fish know..and good anglers will be able to read the bite and adjust their programs accordingly Sent from my VS996 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  15. Not sure how legal it is.... Just to be safe, I don't use them..... I just bite the bullet and use the cut bait. Sent from my VS996 using Lake Ontario United mobile app

  21. Friday June 29 we fished the big fish Friday Species tourney.. Only could weigh in one Laker, Brown, Steelhead, and King. Wheeled into our normal Brownie waters...deployed the typical frog pattern spoons...and all Hell broke loose... Slight problem though... They were not browns , but kings... In 35 FOW! We put a high teens King in the box and released all the others.... No brown! So into 15 fow we go.... Cold water in shallow so out went split shot rigs and mini Chinook divers.... After 5 minutes we iced a 7ish BT. Cool.... Now it's out to 120 to look for our LT... Bottom was void of chickens, but I put down the gambler/ Hammerhead rigs anyway... 20 minutes and Mr Laker 13lb came over the transom...not back to the Kings for an upgrade.... In 35 fow, I put a frog Yeck on the bottom and it immediately went... Not a King, or BT.... But a Steelhead ...9lbs.... We never did upgrade the king.... And ended in 6th out of 27 boats... Not too bad.. MCOC June 30th... 0500 it was hammer down back to the skinny water... The water warmed up a little and the fish moved out a little. Once we got on them, it was on like Donkey Kong...spoons.... Geezers, wonderbreads, shelly Snacks and flounder pounders....short coppers and 5 color rigs took fish also... After the sun got high in the sky, we put out the meat rigs on 8inch spin docs. Man did the Kings chew... We ended up weighing our 5 biggest kings and we ended up 9th out of 47 boats. I'm happy with our finish because there were a lot of good fishermen in the field. Congrats to Jim Piano and Team Hammerhead for taking top king prize and over all win. Being part of the tournament planning was very time consuming... As I walked around the weigh in...I saw sunburned smiles, hand shakes, slaps on the back....and all the coolers with the team's catch... Very humbling... In the end the event raised around 3k for Dream Factory Rochester. I'm blown away.... To all who participated, thank you very much... You guys and Gals are the cream that rises to the top... Be well anglers....and tight lines....Matt Sent from my VS996 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  22. The weekend forecast looks very promising.... It's a bad weekend to be a King Salmon that's for sure... I will be in the Area of Voyager/ Shumway Marina Wend evening at roughly 6pm for anyone wishing to sign up... Please be advised There will be no sign ups accepted after 5pm on Friday...... 23. White and orange was good today.... Flashy uv stuff with high sun.... Sent from my VS996 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  24. Lure depths change depending on where the temp break is... For instance today I put my king spoons in 45-50 degree water... I ran free slide cheaters on the riggers... Theoretically the free sliders are half way down the "Bow" of your rigger rod... Took a few really nice buckeyes on my sliders today. I let the fish tell me what speed to go... If I'm getting my king bites at slower speeds, then my slider spoons will be regular size stingers ( more tolerant of slower speeds). Find the temp break from mid 50s to high 40s and the buckeyes will be there Sent from my VS996 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
