  1. Last day everyone for the big one! yesterday was slow ...went inside at the glass house for two hrs.. nothing.. 65 boats out there.. nothing from them either... ran north to 28 29 lines and managed a coho about 10 inches on a fly  it was cute... had some diapers on it that were fastened on by spoons that said if found return to Ray K..one steely at about 8 lbs returned and off at noon... here I go out the door for the biggun... see ya out there Mark
  2. I would put a cigarette lighter port in and wire it separate from any other accessories... fuse it on the positive side and attach the pos wire to a bar in the console for positive terminals ( there is usually one in the console or battery storage area on most boats) ground the neg wire to the common bar where all the other commons go, and you should have no interference from other electronics. this way you can keep the plug in on your cigarette lighter cord for the Garmin and you can use it in your car or any place that has a plugin for it. Also the lighter socket in the boat is usefull for handheld spot lights or plugging your cell phone in... and best of all you can get an inverter that will plug in to the socket and charge things like a battery for your digital camera off the 110 volt conversion. Make sure it has a cover or plastic plug so water cant get in it and corode the contacts when not in use.
  3. You'll spend 50 bucks on the first bottle in order to join the martini society of flying three sheets to the wind and Ray's two gallon pants fer a little extra speed... but he won't mind while in the buffy mode..HOOKS ON SPOONS  Lord ...what will he think of next...knives with a sharp edge maybe
  4. Looks like the helmsman is holding something...yup it's a martini he wants to trade fer yer tackle....especialy the copper stuff....HMMMMmmm,...is that captain "M" organ on that boat?
  5. Satrurday 8/30....Wow some of you guys really get up early! We got to the county launch at 6am and it was full... so we went to the other side. Chris and I went east out of port and set up in front of the glass house in 115 fow...10 minutes after setup a 17lb king gobbles up the pretty jane jitter fly out 180ft on a mono dpsey set on 2, behind a green crush glow spinny....see him on the scale held by Coors Light shirt (aka Chris) Then it was quiet for a while except for the radio chatter about where did the fish go? Indeed it was a tough morning for a lot of folks on the inside and most went north after 10am including us. We went to the 200fow out from the glass house and Chris gets another LOC board steelhead at 13lb 9 oz on the same nk mag spoon, in 42 second, off the rigger set at 45ft.. It's in the net with the nk stuck way down the gullet and bleeding out badly... the fish weighed 12 on my light scale so we added 2.5 to it and figured maybe 14.5 lb...and it probably was before we got to the scale at Narby's but it lost a lot of fluids on the way in and weighed at the official scale 13lb 9oz replacing his previous 12lb 15oz place fish two days before. We had one more steelhead 8lb after that out at 230 fow on the same nk mag at the same setings...then we figured it would be a good idea to run in and weigh the first steely and get a lunch. Waves were crazy about mid morn.. needed a break from that anyway. so it was slow but we got all three in the boat that decided to play. After lunch we went back out for 3 hours without a hit so we went back in at 6pm Will be out again in the am... post about it later...good luck and be safe.. Mark
  6. We didn't get out today but we will tomorrow out of the Oak...a few pics of yesterdays adventure after a good drying out.....Thanks a lot Fay..like we needed that  One of the kings yesterday on a fly spinny and dipsey combo...down 35 at 240 fow...That's my boy Chris with the smile and the hand scale weighing fish 3 lbs light. Back at Skippers fishing lodge AKA...Mark's garage...that's me the guy on the left..slightly bald ...OK, ok... it's a solar panel for a fishing machine , younger version is Chris my son on the right with the hair I donated to him....21 years ago See ya out there tomorrow ...will report as usual...ta..ta and tight lines Mark
  7. Today the 28th the Fish GOD smiled and told the wind GOD to blow us out to where the fish are  Wind God said let me blow about 20knots out of the south and see if we liked that!...OK so we were out east this time off the flats and took a steelhead on a nk mag 42 second spoon down 60 over 180... turns out to be a 11 lb'r on my hand scale..so we call Sharon at Narby's to ask if it might be worth the look into fish of the day...she said it could since yesterday it was taken by a 10.6 lb steelhead...ya never know!...so we decide to ice it a nd continue to fish with the wind blowing us out further to the 240 and 250 ft depth... west troll slipping sideways to the north at 2.7,,2.9 on the gps...three kings 11 to 17lb came.... two on a mono dipsey out 180 on a 2 setting no ring pulling a green crushglow spinny and jitter fly pretty jane. The other on a nk mag 42 second spoon off the rigger. J- plug running out 300 took something small that got of halfway to the boat...then last thing of the day a skipper took the copper with the j- plug out 150ft and snafu'd the whole other program by being stealthy and hitching a ride for who knows how long ...ended the day five for seven Ugly was the snafu...bad was the wind but not scary...good is this shot of the steelhead at the weigh in scale ....here is where I learned my hand scale was off by 3 lbs light  steely weighed in at 12lb 15 oz and 32 inches for a shot at the LOC board...Son caught the fish and was shocked that it was that big and he was on the LOC board...HURRAY, my name in lights he says. All the Kings came from 35 ft down 240 to 250 fow at 2.8 gps... familiar bite took no hits all day... will try to post a group pic of the catch tommorow.... will post if we go out tommorow... have a good weekend and be safe Mark
  8. Well, the fish GOD frowned upon our offering today and awarded us a long slow boat ride down west again where we were yesterday. The fish had vanished from the area....too much NE wind Top it off the wind GOD said he was disturbed for no offering and began to blow ever so much harder this afternoon and made an uncomfortable ride back to port. Tomorrow we will go out and see if the remnants of Fay will ruin the day...a lot of boats were out east in a bout 100 to 120 feet by late morn...most were wondering what happened to the fish, some out west around the 19W line were getting a few hookups but they were out deeper than us... we were in 80ft. Marked some bait 50, 60, and deeper around the 70 to 80 ft depth, but they were scattered in small pods. Wish I had a better report but it was tough today is all I can say. Mark
  9. The ugly....the bumpy water in the am. Got out and set up for 30 minutes and then had to pickup and run in with green gilled son. Sat for 4 hours until the water became more friendly The good....got at least one good salmon on a brand new 42 second NK28 spoon off the rigger down 67ft over 75 feet out west from port.... see pic of happy son after a nice battle with this 17lber. The bad....Got a fouled dipsey line a little later.. it mated with the same brand new NK 28 42 second spoon and somehow the darn swivel got open and bent and the brand new spoon sunk to 80 feet below the water line Well it at least caught a fish first...Son said it had to be donated to the fish GOD  Had a shaker on a yellow five of diamonds doctor spoon... flipped us the fin and kept flippin after it got off. Several knockoffs and nobody home. packed it in after 6:30 pm. That's it for now... will report tomorrow if the fish GOD has smiled upon our bestowing of monetary expense and shiney new offering Mark
  10. Ray, I'll take up where ya left off this week...glad ta hear ya didn't git all the big'ns... I'm gonna try some dumb on um too...hope there's luck.. maybe i should put on my pink Crocs fer luck..I figured it wouldn't hurt ta put a sign on the bottom of the boat that reads "follow me ta the river for a good time" in red blinkers. I'll report the good , bad and ugly of it all as often as I can...but first I gotta go take some taters ta the warehouse in Geneva monday morn, so I will not get out till tues.... after that...FISH ON! Skippy
  11. given the light color of the bloom, I'd say it was a lot of DEAD spineys probably from an upwelling...good riddence :!:
  12. if you r out fishing for kings in the trench you can hit the spit pretty easy for an evening with the wallys there. good luck
  13. Hope this isn't too late for ya...Try the Calf Island Spit off the south end of the Calf Island. Several years back I had great results there at night between 9pm and 1am. There is a bouy out at the end on the far south tip of the shoal. I would motor out to it and watch the sounder for the drop off then let the wind(South to North) work me back north along the top of the shoal. No motor running and a big yellow bucktail dressed with a crawler jiged off the bottom worked for me and a buddy. The shoal is easy to stay on cause it drops off steeply on each side to over 80 feet. Wally's come up there for forage at night. The shoal is quite long maybe about a half mile and gives you a good long drift to find them. when your drift is done and you want to go back up to th bouy just go out over the deep water and motor back so as not to spook fish off the shallows. Mark
  14. Put a dipsey without the "O" ring on the end of the 45lb copper wire..on a 2 setting 200ft will have you down to approx. 70 ft...I have a 150ft and 300ft 45lb copper I often run a dipsey without ring and it digs in deep, more than stainless will cause of the weight of the copper..plus it keeps rigs up close to the boat, and out to the side so as not to worry about the chance of tangles as much...snap weight is ok but it's something you have to deal with midway thru the retrieve.
  15. OH NO  not this again...where's my oxygen tank...oh yeah, that's right I went and filled it with helium fer the balloons ta cellelabrate Musky's return from...from the ummmm..proctor docter...I mean fishin'...them balloons sure do look funny wit da reservoir thingy on 'em at the bluuuuegrass festivities..Ray said next time ask him fer some that ain't all slimy wit dat lube.. nonoxy sumtin or udder.
  16. Happy B-day Ray, you should feel very comfortable in yer buffy suit you were given on this day by yer mama. Be proud and wear it all day! Hope ya get a new fishfinder (one that doesn't charge ya $500 ta find fish) Mark
  17. Gambler, when you run the scotty releases, are you putting the release pinch pads on the backing or can you put the pads directly on the copper? Like if you had a 600ft setup and wanted to run it say 300 or 400 feet off the tow line. Curious to see what would happen but never tried. I wonder if it would harm the copper.
  18. Thanks for the insight fellas, especially ...YOU... Ray, next time ya need a spare fur yer van or boat trailer, my neighbors have got some on thier roof, they'll prolly trade fer that block ya got... but ya gota git yer own ladder, mine is still leanin on my bed.
  19. Any body ever try to achieve greater depth with a 30lb mono dipsey by adding a one pound ball ahead of the diver? How would you rig it if you think something like that would work....or would it just be too much "stuff" on the line. Trying to avoid the kinky, pigtailing, breakin off, bulky, wire setup is the reason I ask. Mark
  20. I goota make some of those up for my next trip up to Parent Lake in Quebec
  21. This very same thing happened at the Salmon River. I don't know if the guy lived, but way back when the snagging thing got popular, a guy was fighting a fish and the snag hook came rocketing back out of the fish and hit the guy in the eye with a loud pop. he fell backwards screaming and clamping his hands over his face. When people pulled his hands away there was no sign of the lead and all there was was a hook eyelet with line attached pokeing out of the socket. I also was the victim of my own snag hook coming out of a fish and hit me in my gut with a t-shirt on...That hurt BAD.. thought it penetrated and was afraid to look down there for a few seconds. I was lucky...it didn't stick in me...but left one hell of a bruise just onder my sternum area. countless people really got hurt doing that crap..I'm glad it's over with...cave man style fishing
  22. wish I didn't have that greasy 1/4 pounder with cheese and beer now
  23. For just one...for Lake Ontario or Niagara...Jetty rod about 8.6 feet stiff in the back and flex in the front, able to throw long distance (no more than two piece) for long retreive...be able handle 3 to 4 ounces casting spoon/ lure... not too many guides and large guides for ease of speeding the line out on a hard cast, this avoids the birds nest $5 dollar snap, lure and swivel flying to England unattached. Spinning reel for everything, long cast spool ...fast retrieve...drag controll on the back of the reel for convienience..spooled with 12 lb bagley silver thread monofilament (low memory and limp).... spinning reels are versitile...I have used them from everything from casting, jigging, ice fishing, bait fishing, trolling, and even used them for trolling salmon in a pinch. The rod is a preference thing and is not as versitile in different situations...broad spectrum of shore fishing might be surf fishing Cape Hatteras with a 13ft heavy heaver...or fishing small streams for trout with a 5 foot light action pole....I would guess if you are from Saint Catherines, you are fishing jetties or piers in Ontario or Erie and you need length to avoid rocks and get distance. You also need some sensitivity for bait fishing so keep the tip light but have backbone for casting heavy spoons for the fall runs of salmon. but maybe you are fishing bushy pond shores or streams and then you need a smaller lighter rod.
  24. I use the FF on my downriggers for the "down" part of the line....Since I don't plan on fishing more than 150 feet deep, that's all I spool on the reel. The vertical part of the drop to the ball is the part the fleas cling to the worst...for total spool fill I have 17lb trilene xl for backing, then the 150 feet of 30lb flea flicker (rod to ball) and then back to 60 feet of trilene again for the portion going ball to lure/ spinney/fly combo or whatever. Because it is flat in conformity,The flea flicker "flicks" back and forth as it pulls through the water , and sheds them (FLEAS) off even if you don't use the whole 60 ft lead from the ball to lure that is the trilene, it still fliks them off from the twitching action. HOWEVER, do pay very very close attention to your knot integrity, the flat line is slippery to most knots and worse if you don't CAREFULLY tie your connections....Blood knots to splice 17lb trilene and 30 lb flea flicker are difficult and require several reties I have found in order to achieve a good knot that won't slip. Some other knots wil possibly work better but I haven't tries them as I haven't had trouble with this setup for two seasons. As far as the performance of the line I havn't noticed any bad things about it...I have some reservations on whether it would work very well on slide divers..havn't tried it there yet but gotta guess the diver would not lock very good on it but if the diver was on the part that was trilene it might be OK.
