  1. Nice season Ray. You guys got decent horns in a horrible year weather-wise to hunt. I did my part with does, but never saw a shooter buck. I also have a brother as my hunting companion......makes the whole experience that much more special over the years. Cheers to another one in the books!!!
  2. Holy Crap!.....thanks Rick. I highly recommend the steelhead candy SS for steelies. Moody Blue has been good to me. I can't believe they are discontinuing these patterns . Christmas is coming early for me.
  3. It would appear the deer used the light from the camera to see it's tomentors. I have noticed deer will bed close to houses at night. I always thought it was to stay away from coyotes and have some light to see by. The deer in the video looked healthy to me......f@ckers!!!!
  4. Mortigan, the season goes until Sunday the 11th.

    Lake Erie 'Eyes

Yea, not sure why they need to study Lake Trout on Erie...... but this year off Erie (at traditional depths) from the Catt. to Barcelona fishing was slow, maybe the netting info means we were all fishing too deep. Maybe the walleyes are in that "gobie-zone" and don't need to go out to deeper water. The Catt. contigent has been catching Walleyes all summer by casting erie dearies just off the weededges.

    Lake Erie 'Eyes

Looks like the algae blooms at the east end of the lake have pushed walleyes to our side http://www.buffalonews.com/sports/other ... 653663.ece
  7. Nice buck. My guess 3.5 year old 118 BC?
  8. Ray's points are spot on. I would add that later in the season deer get hip to the steady cadence of hunters' footsteps going into the woods. Give yourself enough time to still-hunt to your stand. If the leaves are cornflakes loud then walk on the front pad of your foot and throw in some soft grunts on your grunt tube. The idea is sound like a deer not a human. Walk into the wind to your stand, so if you have to go way around the long way......do it. Easier to pick a stand location at the head of a drainage common to southern tier hills. These cuts in the earth will mask your visability, sound and scent. Be invisible. Get in and get out with out being detected is key to not ruining a hunting spot. Also, as the season goes on think deeper into the woods and thicker cover.
  9. So that is how Larry got his curls in the old photos. Happy B-day Jerry.
  10. Have been hunting properties in near Salamanca, West Almond and Wales. I have yet to see daytime chasing this year. Too warm IMO. All the nookie has been taking place at night. WE NEED SNOW.
  11. Thanks Jeremy, I hunt with Scott (from your lease group) on occasion. I should have included Catt. county.
  12. This year I got in on a timber lease near Salamanca. The amount of land 1200 acres per the cost $150 per person is awesome. I love to hunt large tracts where I can stretch my legs and spend a day tracking if the deer aren't moving. The problem with the current lease is the hunting parties think "hunting" is driving their ATVs thru the woods. It was so bad I found myself not being able to hear deer walking because of all the noise. When I lay at bed at night before opening day.....I don't invision loud ATVs buzzing all over. I also heard three gun shots in the middle of the night (not sure if was coming from adjacent Indian lands). SOOOOOO.......I was wondering if anyone out there can point me towards a lease for next year. Looking for Allegheny, Catt. or Stueben counties. Thanks.
  13. Lots of factors this year with the warm weather. This weekend 60 degrees and windy......expect supresssion of deer movement. Full moon.....expect the bucks to be testing the does all night. Would you go jogging with a winter coat on in the summer? When it is warm out I often go to my stand late and stay all day. If weather is warm with a full moon and the bucks are chasing during the night they are probably going to be bedded until late morning when they need to stretch their legs and check their scrapes. I often see Bucks on patrol in the 10:00- 12:00 window. The other peak is the last hour before dark. Don't get discouraged. This weekend looks like the same type of weather .
  14. Yep, they are in the Beech here in Western New York. No Acorns, but Beech o'plenty. The turkey I zipped last Sat. had it's crop full of Beech. The does have been bedding where they eat....in Beech stands.
  15. Often these are made on logging roads with no available branches overhead. I assume you know the difference between a scrape and turkey scratching. Just another piece of the puzzle that defines buck travel. Look around....is there a rubline nearby?............. more scrapes?.......home base for a doe group?.....Time to set up trail cameras to see if it is a worthwhile area. Many scrapes such as those at the edges of fields, are a waste to hunt because they are visited at night. Better to find those deep woods scrapes esp. near small gaps/openings. These little didies are like a firehydrant to a dog and are visited year after year serving as "scent posting" spots.
  16. Looks like he had a "bad antler day". Probably sleeps on his right side.
  17. The oldtimers on Erie use hand lines with multiple hooks. Emerald shiners are King on Erie, but if the graph is full below the boat, the perch guys pull out the eyes of the fish they caught and use them. Boat control is key. Anchors, drift bags, electric trolling motors etc. Best to stay vertical over the fish.
  18. Congrats......but put some orange on that kid!
  19. Fixed blades all the way. Thunderhead 100 grain..... widely offered so easy to find replacement blades. I pulled a foster-type 12 ga. slug from a front shoulder.....it went in 2"......couldn't figure out why the deer did not go down with the first shot. At the wrong angle it does not matter what you use for a broadhead.
  20. Mark, I know you are new to the area.....you are finding out WNY has a year'round world class fishery. Your boat is perfect to take advantage of the "off-season" fishery. You could spend the rest of your days in discovery of all there is to offer.
