Trouble landing with copper
Gill-T replied to Matt ching's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
In that case, you probably have some light biters that have an increased chance of coming off due to length of time to reel all that wire up. I use the 50 size Saltist reels that are high speed. -
Trouble landing with copper

Set your drag like you would for wire dipsy. If you are using big paddles, expect to loose fish from all the counterweight drag from the paddle and thick wire. Keep the connection to the fish with consistent pressure. When you sense the fish is heading for the surface, reel like mad to maintain tension with the rod high to prevent the paddle from whiplashing the hook free as the paddle clears the water. -
Got to try slide divers Dan (if you haven’t already). The mono leader builds shock absorption and removes pigtails in wire. You can bass flip them outside your spread as they don’t spin on themselves. The long leads with slide divers allows larger flashers to extend further back so when you send them down they won’t catch rigger lines.

Split rings are a another source of potential failure. Rings come off and I just use a duolock snap. Leader goes to a ball bearing swivel. Leader length is from tip of rod tip to the reel.

A couple of things. 1). Use mag dipsys to sharpen the dive curve with less line out. 2). Let copper out SLOW and let it hang out the back a few minutes to allow it to rise before sending out on board line. 3). Run the copper way out on boards 4). Increasing speed will rise copper more so than dipsys so before sending, bump you speed up 5). Bring in your inside copper before starting a turn ( or both)

Niagara

The Niagara flow is relatively flea-free due to Lake Erie water. This year the Niagara is pushing north and not staying along the South shore. Normally, I don’t have to deal with fleas in Niagara County. If you get a clog, have a second person push down on the wad and rub it back and forth (no jokes please) and the fleas mostly loose their attachment. Solo anglers....good luck.

Bait fish
Gill-T replied to Captsmate's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
It was either Alewives or Gizzard Shad if they were bubbling up at surface. We get smelt and emerald shiners migrate into the upper and lower Niagara at certain times of the year. They head back to the lake at some point. I had asked Dr Weidel’s team to investigate alewife numbers in some of the bays along upper St Lawrence and their findings were almost none. I do find my fish finder shows much more bait after late July and always wondered if what I was seeing was additional winter bottom bait going into spawn-summer mode, new YOY alewives or bait coming back from the rivers. I think what I fall on is the increased bait seen in summer is a little of “all of the above” contributing -

Musky torpedo in front of weighted steel. I run a 200’ and a 225’ section. I was catching kings with a flasher/ fly on that rig this weekend with the temp break at 68’, I would imagine I was at least down that deep.
