Why aren't we back to regular stocking levels?
Gill-T replied to Yankee Troller's topic in Open Lake Discussion
We all like to play general manager of our sports teams so I will play lake manager and be thinking with the alewife die off this year, I would like to see what the alewife survey shows before agreeing to stocking increases from current level (let’s hope there will be a survey). -

We shall see what the runs up the salmon show. It sounds like a wad of fish showed up in Mexico finally. Hopefully we get some rain and soon. I am more concerned that fish have been absent at the same time there was a substantial fish kill this spring . Not sure if any testing for VHS was conducted by fisheries. Disease doesn’t care which hatchery you came from.

Pacific NW Biologist Talking About Salmon Genetics
Gill-T replied to Yankee Troller's topic in Open Lake Discussion
I don’t think any scientist worth their salt doesn’t think genetics doesn’t play a role in traits. Not sure why our fish managers are fighting this. It is a very easy policy/workflow to create and follow during egg collecting time at Altmar …don’t take eggs or sperm from fish under 17 lbs. Done. This follows the stated policy of lake managers to manage Lake Ontario for a trophy fishery. They are not following their own stated objectives by milking two year olds. -

Olcott reports
Gill-T replied to nijajordan's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
If I was fishing this time of year the first place I would look for staging fish would be 80-120’ off microwave tower. If cold water pushes in, look shallower. If East wind comes a calling, look for duck weed aggregations West of port. The pen reared fish will be looking for home water smell - hence looking for duckweed. Active biting fish are hit or miss in bath water so a good first place to start is where cool water intersects with bottom. -

Tons of fish off the Catt still. From the shoal out front 48’ out 72’. Everyone is catching. We fished the shoal for more sporty fight. Three way rigs and downriggers with small worm harnesses. Two man limit in 1.25 hrs. Lots of bait in upper water levels with hooks down around 20’ that we didn’t even bother with. Plenty of meat on that bone. Get out there!

Why didn’t you drive the fish downstream back to the lake to keep the good times rolling???👍

Nice ride! Your friend probably came to the same conclusion, the same way I did ….while on my back putting new bottom coat on my boat. I am getting too old for maintaining a fiberglass boat. I will be putting my Bayliner up for sale at some point next year after I have fully broken in my new motor. Going aluminum multi-species with an outboard.
