  1. No backing 1000ft of 30lb fits perfect wrap your spool in electrical tape first. I have Opti wire not sure it's made anymore but Malin or Torpedo is what alot of guys run, I like smoke color but it doesn't really matter. Before fishing I clipped on 6oz and trolled 5mph let it all out then respooled under tention, didn't want to get a screamer on and have it snap, this makes sure it's laying on the spool perfectly for fishing first time out, not sure if it helped but someone told me to do this moons ago so I did and will do it every time I spool
  2. I run spoons clean by themselves. I have put in plenty of time with SD/Fly's. They have taken their fair share of fish but mostly steelies the lead with the carbon 14 is deadly on kinds (ealy and late). I added a 450 copper to my setup last year (probably closer to 425 I tangled it) so I run the leadcore early and late for the first 2 hours of daylight then switch to copper. I'll probably bring big boards with me this year and run both since I seem to always do good on junk lines. I have a smaller boat so only have 2 riggers more lines is good!
  3. I run 10 color knot in the water I start with 50 ft of flouro so if you need to chop a few feet your not left with a real short leader. My favorite is moonshine carbon 14 early and late in the day, always good for big fish.
  4. Thanks for the report SW2 I'm heading up to Olcott Friday!
  5. 100 back will get you 36 down but after that it's just more line because they are bouyant 50 tru trips is what everyone runs now or 40 tru trips. I pull 40's on offshore boards with 10lb Maxima, co-polymer has less stretch than mono. I would run 2 per side so if you get a junk fish and the jet doesn't turn ove you'll see the diffference and know to check one. Jet's pull fish and pull fish well. You can add weight to them, 2-3oz is standard for us Ohio boys when running out east.
  6. I was told the that when it rotates it sort of thumps in the water which mimics the sound/vibration of a tail kick of a feeding salmon coupled with the flash this is what draws them in, them being curious eating machines they hit the presented bait. who knows..they work awesome though. EDIT..maybe I wasn't told but I read it...http://www.protroll.com/books/?id=1&p_id=5 Remember if you read it on the internet it must be true!
  7. The 8'6 rods with the 30 will be fine for riggers, they will be a fun rod to fish with as well. The 9'6 will work great for divers with the wire on the 47's, use the traditional twilli and you'll be good.
  8. Canada whopped the US last year on Dryden tho. Series is 1-1
  9. If you are going to use Ipilot in conjunction with a kicker they cannot be beat, the auto pilot works great and you can steer from anywhere in the boat with the remote, you can set cruise control and at a glance look down and see your speed and adjust from there. I use my kicker for main thrust and Terrova for dialing in speed to the tenth and for AP and cruise control. For walleye fishing slow spinner fishing or slow trolling cranks I don't even use my kicker I have a 21 ft glass tourney style ranger walleye boat, I have 3 Diehard group 31 platniums 36volt so I can go all day and have plenty of power. using my kicker I have fished 4 days without a charge because I'm essentially just using it for steer. If you use these motors properly they are the ulimate in boat control.
  10. I'm going to be building one later this summer 24 by 32 any idea how much labor will be I'm not up for the task myself. I walked through a calulator on carter lumbers site and materials run 5500-5800 depending on doors. Any advice for a pole barn noob.
  11. Check walleye central classfieds, tons of boats on their even some in canada but many up north.
  12. Bingo. Gen1's were pretty bad and were terrible on gas, the V-6 200-275's also had more problem than the 4's. I know some guys that had 250's that hated constantly in the shop but the last couple year alot of my friends have been running 300's on there walleye rigs and love them. Yamaha makes the most reliable 4 stroke on the market though.
  13. I run 30lb Maxima and it deters the fleas very well, if they are rediculously bad once in awhile you'll have to pluck some off but you can still fish with ease this has ony happened one trip in the past 5 years. best line ever.
  14. I have the redwood boards from AO as well as the 500lb spectra line, these are the standard boards everyone uses on erie, you see ZERO otter boats on Erie we call them junk down here and I'm actually surprised anyone even runs them up there to be honost. I added flags to mine as well. Best built boards you can buy, some of my friends have the white AO boards, they work great too but you better have a serious mount for your mast and have Cisco motors cause you'll burn up your big jons in a hurry my buddy blew up his plastic reels as well while running weed wacker line from it getting wound so tight had to go to Cisco reels as well.
  15. You can buy rod tethers that go around your reels and attach to the base of your rod holders so they can't slip out if the tow line grabs an eye. I have a low slung ranger walleye boat and I had a my big jon mast custom made so it's about 9 ft long so it sits higher off the water, the higher and more toward the bow the better I sure don't want to loose a rod and reel either, you just have to watch your turns and have an AP making turns at 10 degrees at time helps.
  16. I fish F-18 exclusively for night bite walleye and the newer colors are awesome expecially hot steel and the bleeding chartruse and blue shad, the only old color that is good is the chartruse one and they make the chrome clown again which is also good. Frank's great oudoors has F-18 on sale for 6.99 and 8.99 depending on the color. http://www.franksgreatoutdoors.com/orig ... 00074.html Get em before they go back up. BTW- most tackle shops around Erie sell these for 9.99 or 10.99
  17. I would just say run a 57 Plus 10 colors plus all the backing you need.
  18. I run 12lb Maxima Ultragreen, it's a co-polymer, slightly less bungy than mono, it's without a doubt stronger than big game and won't fray like mono, its also much more abrasion resistant due to the woven plastics that get put into the line when they make it, if you use it with planer board clips it won't wear into the line either from constant clipping like when using an OR-18, stray steelies won't bust this line either even large fish over 10 pounds.. No need for flouro leaders it's pointless and just another connection to weaken or fail.
  19. I have a older Navionics Great Lakes East Chip. This is the Classic Chip 901Xl has all of Ontario and Erie on it. This chip is for black and white units, older Lowrance Global maps units, X-15, 17, etc, these chips are very hard to come by and are the same as the gold chips but in classic format. 75.00
  20. My buddy has these for sale. http://www.walleyecentral.com/forums/sh ... p?t=191836
  21. Sound like you'll be trolling. If you'll be fishing the deeper waters of the eastern basin of lake erie I would start with divers. Get yourself 4 dipsey rods (all 4 the same) 8 or 8'6 will do. Shimano TDR's are good rods in medium heavy and run about 30-35 dollars. For reels a good solid reel is a Diawa Accudepth 47 Plus series for about 65.00 next up from that is a Diawa Sealine 47 LCA for abou 95.00. If you plan on using this reel for salmon when the fleas aren't around fill it with 12/50 power pro. If you won't be using it for salmon get yourself some cheap backing and buy a 150 yard spool and fill top it off with the power pro (you do this in reverse so you know how much backing then put it on the empty reel or just have a tackle shop do if your confused) If you don't want Diawa's, Okuma Convector 30s or if your really cheap Magda 30's are the bottom of the barrel as far as linecounters go. Get 4 dispey to run, get a spool of 20lb Seagar Invix or Carbon Pro flourocarbon for leader material to use to run off the dipseys, some high quality snap swivels and cross lock snaps, put the snap swivel on the business end where you want to attach your spinner or spoon, if you want to run a shallow billed crank off the diver you can flip your leader and put the snap on that end. Stickbaits are unlimited, Reef Runners in deep divers with snap weight in 2 or 3oz are great to run off inline planer boards or deep husky jerks or bomber long a's, or any shallow billed crankbait (ripsticks, bombers, renowskys, huskys, etc) you can run off leadcore or your divers. Spinners- I could go on for days about this I suggest making your own, hard to find good spinners on the shelf. I'll add more later, if you have questions ask away.
  22. I went through the same process check out their site, all the info is there, once you make one shirt with them they have all your stuff on file getting additional shirts or making changes later is easier.
