Nice Job ICEMAN! The eyes are stacked up in the deep water (40' - 50') right now. The shore bite is very wind dependent. Even though the eyes are deep during the day there are always some along the shore. Could be good the next couple of nights.

It was pretty slow out of Oswego too. Fished between Alcan and the plant in mainly 120 - 140. Picked up too nice kings early but no bites from 7:30 - 1:00. Didn't see many nets out today. [ Post made via iPhone ]

I agree with REDEYES, I would go with cranks/stick baits this time of year. However, I RARELY run them down to bottom this time of year. A lot of fish are suspended as high as 15' down over the deep water 40'+. Watch the sonar and try to get your baits where you are marking the fish. Fished for 2 hours last night and picked up 4 nice eyes. They were down 20' - 25' then just before dark they went deeper and were near bottom.

Sounds like some great action! Oneida is weird like that, those fish bite like crazy one day and not the next.

Last year I used similar jig heads to what chowder is refering to. They were 3/4 oz. white jig heads from Gander and I used them a with 3" GULP minnow. That worked great for lakers in about 70'. I was anchored though so drifting with a somewhat light jig head was not an issue.

Good info on the instinctive strike technique Chowder. I agree, not letting the jig stay at one depth for only a couple of jigs seems to work better for me. Because of the recomendations from guys on here I have been using 8lb. fireline with about a 6' leader of 10 lb. flourocarbon on a fairly stiff baitcast pole. Works good so far.

I wouldn't go deeper than 100' if you don't have to. I am sure it can be done but it is probably more difficult. If you are marking them down 80 or 90' start with that and keep moving your lure up. Keep an eye out for fish coming in above your jig, reel it up a little above them and jig it. That seems to work the best for me. Good luck.

There is a ton of bait out there this year and that is making it a challange.

I use my 16' grumman on Ontario in Mexico bay and out of Oswego several times a year. You just need to pay attention to the wind/weather forecast. I usually stick with 10 MPH or less wind if it is SW, W, NW, or NE. A south wind can have a quite a chop too when you are a few miles off shore. Just pay attention to the weather and use common sense.

Lot's of great info in this. Makes the new lifevest law sound pretty darn important. I went in once when I was about 12. There was still some ice on the lake but I was in a canoe. What they describe is almost exactly what I remember. First you gasp and tend to flounder around, then you start to lose function of your arms and legs because they go numb. I was lucky enough to get back in the canoe and paddle it back in, full of water. My legs were numb but I was fine. Luckily I was only maybe 200 yards from shore. Thanks for posting this.
