  1. Is the water level high enough for easy launch or bringing the boat up to dock at Frank's?
  2. You have a PM
  3. I use rubber bands. with fairly tight black settings. The bands allow me to see a strike because the rod tip will start dancing, even when it is only a hitch hiker. Larger fish will either break the bands or open the blacks.

    NY perch

I'm sure you would love to know.
  5. Mmm. "very inexpensive".... I'm not really sure what that means. Maybe you can provide an explanation with numbers so I can compare how very inexpensive your rub rail is compared to other rub rail out there. And yes I am interested and I travel through Penn Yan often. Thank you.
  6. I have had cannons and Penns. My Penns are 30 years old and are well maintained, they have yet to cause me a problem. The cannons, are ok but not great.
  7. It is a common problem with things that move too fast. But it is easily solved with a snubber just above the weight. It will act as a shock absorber and solve the breaking cable problem
  8. I’m sorry to hear that. A very long drive with a skunk in the end is no fun.
  9. It depends on where you park your trailer... If it is in a heated garage, you should be ok even now. I usually try to wait till mid April, but sometimes the bug hits me and I go earlier. And at the end of the day I just drain the block completely which really is not very difficult.
  10. However, it is not all doom and gloom. 2 years ago, I caught a 463 pound (according to the captain) blue marlin while fishing off a charter in the gulf stream.
  11. Just south of the Oregon Inlet camping , route 12 goes over a long bridge. At the south end of that bridge there is a an old section of bridge that has been turned into a fishing spot. You can cast into the current in 2 different ways. Either by using a very heavy sinker or by using a big bobber with a 2 ounce sinker under it and let the current take the bait. I have had success both ways. As for an offshore day trip, It is really touch and go. By the time you make it to the gulf stream, the engine noise has woken up the sharks and instead of fighting the fish, it is mostly a race against the sharks. the sharks usually steal whatever fish you got on your line before it reaches the boat. It is very reminiscent of the seals stealing the stripers from the line at the Race on Cape Cod. For surf fishing you should bring gear that allows you to make very long casts. The terminal tackle would be a one two rig. The propeller like thingies that gambler uses on his rigs are a very good addition. The Oregon Inlet is a maybe 10 ,15 minutes south of Kitty Hawk
  12. Usually there are a few slips in the salmon river. Or you can go in Wrights Landing, Oswego. Quite a few people have moved from the Little Salmon to Oswego, Because from the Little Salmon to the fishing grounds it is a long distance with slow going in the Little Salmon, while out of Wrights Landing it is max 10 minutes away. On top of that, there is good security. From Rome to Oswego is about 15/ 20 minutes longer than it is to the little salmon, But you don't have to suffer through the insult of what they call "live Music" at the grilled chicken place
  13. What I am saying is that we have to try to enable the DEC to be as effective as possible, given their obvious manpower limitations. Sometimes that means that certain rules should be eased. As an example there is speed limit enforcement. The sign says 55 , but everybody does 60 + zooming right past state troopers who do not stop them. This enables the state troopers to chase and stop the cars that do over 70 and to punish these speeders. If they had to stop all the 60 + a little bit cars , those tickets would over power the judicial system and a ton of these tickets would be thrown out of court . This would discourage the state troopers the same way the DEC officers are discouraged now.
  14. Another way to ease the burden on the DEC Officers would be to revisit the regulations. Some of these rules are iffy. Like making flossing illegal. How many fisherman are skilled enough to successfully floss? Those experts do not need to floss to fill a creel. As for snagging salmon in the Genesee river gorge. The snaggers do have a point. These fish are about to die without any chance of successful reproduction under the falls. At least the salmon will be eaten by people who often cannot afford to eat salmon. This would lessen the pressure on the judicial system and the DEC can free up officers to be effective in other ways. Now night vision trailcams placed in parking lots and known poaching spots could be very effective, so there is a great way to enforce the law and catch perpetrators. We also have to ask ourselves if following the regulations makes us the best thing. For example: We catch a fish but we set it back because although it is of legal size it is not as big or too big for what we want and sometimes that fish we set back has become a floater left behind the boat to die while we are on our merry way. Some people would think of that as worse than snagging dying fish.
  15. A drone or a trail camera in a tree sounds like a good idea. But.. how is a drone or a camera going to measure the length of a fish or recognize what kind of fish is being caught and what is the action radius of a drone? Never mind making it stick in court. And Gambler, NYS does not favor criminals.
  16. I just read Gator's report about the quality of his new riggers and they sound impressive. However, I am just as impressed by the Penn electric riggers that for the past 30 years have performed with amazing accuracy and reliability. I tried the Big Jon , but felt that they were too close to the boat , the cannons , but there always are problems with the up and down button , The Scotty is too bulky for my taste and the autostop is not something I trust. But the Penns are narrow, powerful and are slow enough when stopping so as not to snap the cable . The auto stop is instantly adjustable by turning a wheel. I have four of them and enough spare parts for the next 20 years. Does anybody aside from DRLFC and me still use these? Or am I just defending something that everybody else dumped in the trash can of time? If you have any of them sitting in your barns gathering spider webs , give me shout. I am interested in taking them of your hands for a reasonable price.
  17. The replacement fuel lines have special requirements. They are not the automotive type, specially the filler hose. I got mine through the I-boats store, but West marine also has them. And yes, they are expensive but a fire on a boat in the middle of a lake is very expensive. It is a bit hard for me to explain how to remove and replace that hose with a text, but if you sent me a PM with your phone # I will call you and explain.
  18. I'm interested in trying Big Ditch. What time does the expo open?
  19. Right now , what mostly endangers my outdoors plans is ICE. The kind that floats on the water and seems to get thicker and thicker by the day. I fear the political decisions that decide when to pull ice barrier in Lake Eerie. I have bad dreams about trying to reach the Green Can while being surrounded by ice bergs that come thundering down the Niagara Falls and race down the River, spreading out exactly where I want to drop my lines. As for all the political decisions... I do believe that the soup is never eaten as hot as it is served. Most of all these plans tend to die a slow death or get buried in a desk or get lost between sub committees, or just decapitated by change of politics after elections .
  20. Thank you for exposing deliberate misinformation. I'm not sure that only money is behind this. It looks more like an effort to steer voter sentiment toward anti democratic party sentiment with the upcoming elections in mind. Lying or misleading has always been a powerful tool to get onto or stay on the gravy train. I suggest reading "Breakfast of Champions" by Kurt Vonnegut to get a preview of what may be waiting for us.
  21. But you will probably set of the alarms at airport security because of the heavy metals..... (just kidding)
  22. Do you mean the Penn ? I'm asking because I have a Penn Black Diamond, but it is for striped bass fishing
  23. That is less than half the story. Very often statistics are created with misleading information. A classic one is the styrofoam statistic. One can make the point that styrofoam does not add much to a landfill because it does not weigh very much. It is very easy to make a statistic proving that fact. The volume of the styrofoam is never mentioned.
  24. By the way, the price of bread went down because of the tariffs. How is that possible? The tariffs were imposed and in reaction to that, a very, very big customer of agricultural products decided to take his business elsewhere and the grain that would normally have been exported is now flooding the local markets. So now supply is bigger than demand.
  25. This is the perfect thread for cabin fever.
