  1. I never fish that deep. I find lots of lakers in 70 - 90 fow.Thats part of what I like about jigging you dont have to burn gas to get half way out onto the lake. Sometimes they are even shallower, in the spring they can be in 30 ft or less. If your trying to jig them up from 180 ft youl would have a lot of trouble keeping your line vertical with a 2 to 4 oz jig. Even in 80 ft I just play them slow and you can see when they release the air. Make sure you let them release the air and you wont have any troubles with floaters that have distended bellies and cant get back down. Also jigs with single SHARP hooks do minimal damage. Ive always been trolling for them but this is something new Ive been trying and Im having fun with it. I wondering if rainbows browns and salmon could be caught this way?
  2. want to try something different? try jigging for them. https://www.flickr.com/photos/gordymohr/sets/72157645207485918/
  3. well, i just read the whole thread. wow. you boys shouldnt play so rough, somebodys going to end up crying. if there were no more king salmon in lake O it wouldnt really bother me that much. I fish for trout more often than salmon. actually only go after salmon if I have guests on board who really want to fish for them.as I dont enter derbys I dont go after them much. Im one of the few who actually target lake trout. I like rainbows and browns as well. Recently have begun to learn how to jig for lakers and its been fun. and fishing is supposed to be fun. Ive read so many reports on another site where guys are chasing around the lake burning gas and time looking for salmon and complaining about no fish. Thats not fun. guess Im just easy to please. that is all. Good Fishin
  4. similar to the Big Weenie grease traps, which I can recommend as lake trout killers.
  5. i used to fish large size cowbells years and years ago, but never liked the amount of drag they put on the line , over time I began searching for a better solution and for a couple of years used the Panther Martin attractors, they worked even better than the large cowbells and caught even more fish. Then I came across the "grease traps" sold by Big Weenie Brand and they outperform even the Panther Martin attractors. If your after lake trout these things are incredible. Fish them with a Plazma spoon or a Spin n Glo and they outperform any other rig I ever tried for lake trout. I target lake trout a lot , the grease traps are lake trout killers. They are not cheap, but they work very very well.
  6. I bought one and modified it to use for lake trout fishing. Im going to test it soon.
  7. I have tried the 6 pack a few times in the past and only once had a bite on it. I was very violent strike and I believe the fish (whatever it was) actually hit the attractor and not the trailing lure. I say this because there was a massive jolt on the line and the rod bounced and when I reeled it in to have a look the 6 pack and the leader and lure were gone. That was a few years ago and havent used a 6 pack since then. Last year I did alot of laker fishing with the grease trap and it works very well for lakers. I havent targeted other species with it so Im not sure it will work for them, although Im thinking it might work for rainbows.
  8. Spin n glow behind a PM gang troll is absolutely killin em for me this year. Drag it low and slow just above bottom, if your cannonball hits bottom now and then , so much the better
  9. Texas red for trout. Metalic green for salmon.
  10. Nice pics. Anytime you have to transport your fish useing a wheelbarrow you know youve done well!
  11. Hey iggy135, welcome. You didnt mention what tackle your using but Ill assume youve got riggers. I fish out of Bronte quite a bit. I usually start right at the 80 ft drop straight out of the harbour, and troll east or west. You can usually find bait in that area. Sometimes they will be alot shallower and sometimes deeper, but its a good place to start.I use mostly spoons and run them behind 8 in flashers but alot of guys use flasher/fly setups. Lymans work good too. Ive always had better luck in the morning but the last time out didnt get a good fish till 1200 noon. If targeting rainbows I troll an orange spoon in the top 20 ft of water, if Im after salmon Ill watch the ff for bait and set the depth accordingly. Theres a thousand different techniques and ways to catch em but hope this bit of info will get you started. Listen to the VHF, most guys use ch 68 or 72 and you will know whose doing what and catching them where. Oh, everybodys got diff ideas on trolling speeds. My starting point is around 2.5. If Im not getting bites I go faster. Last year I was consistently getting better results trolling over 3mph according to the ff speed. Good Luck and good fishin to ya! Jawbreaker out.
  12. Nope, we saw you guys out there, but this one came at almost noon. Had to move out deeper to avoid all the blow boats going in circles. Man those guys are iritating.
  13. Fished off Bronte on the 27th. Tons of bait in 90 to 100 fow. I mean tons! I think there was too much bait around as the fishing was slow. My fishing buddy and I caught a rainbow each and I also managed to boat a 20 pound salmon. But man, so much bait, its like the old days, when the lines would vibrate going through the schools. I have to mention that one of the rainbows had 2 big alewife in the gut. They had to be close to 6 in long.
  14. One rainbow between Grimsby and Winona in about 75 fow on the 6th. It was calm that day. In my experience, it is very tough to catch fish in a NE wind. If you were out in 20 mph wind it must have been lumpy
  15. Launched at Bronte, got a late start. Not much on the screen, no bait marked. Trolled into 180 fow and got 3 chinook, the biggest only mid teens. All on mag mich stingers in mogoose and glows puke. wire dipsey and rigger set 55-66 ft down. Water was flat calm. Bright and sunny - not the best for salmon fishing. Moved to a new location and my fishing partner got a bow on a mag stinger in copper. Slow day, hope things pickup soon
  16. The Canon PowerShot SX110IS is the one I use. I bought it new for less than $250 Cdn. 9 mega pixels, 10X optical zoom and you can take some nice video clips with it. In fact one of my videos was on this site, so have a look at it and you can see the quality for yourself. This is a real nice camera, the still pics are great too. Check it out, and good luck and good fishin to ya.
  17. I troll for brown trout and I do use flourocarbon leaders. Tie them to my main line using a double uni-knot. I also use a small snap on the end of my leader to attach my lure.Is fourocarbon necessary? It cant hurt so why not use it. Im no expert but it works for me. Good fishing to you.
  18. Hey guys, that my video and as far the chatterstick, it works great, the chartruese color is awesome, it took 3 hits from cohos last week, and Im sure its gonna catch me some browns and steelies aswell.
  19. Do not believe it boys, Ive seen this same picture before on another site, and last time they claimed it was caught of Kincardine Ont on Lake Huron. They also said it was caught on a blue and silver lure. As far as I know, sturgeon are bottom feeders and dont hit trolled lures. Also check out that boat in the background. Its a Customweld, very popular on the west coast in saltwater. so, as far as it being caught here, Id have to say no thats not true.
  20. I tried a couple of these last summer. Absolutely no hits on them. They look good, I tried them off dipseys and riggers with and without flashers but no takers. Im dont think they will stay in my tackle box much longer.
  21. Hello LOU, let me introduce myself. Call me gordy, my screen name is gordymohr and my vhf handle is Jawbreaker. Recognize some of you from other sites and am here to learn from the pros. Fish out of a small boat usually out of Bronte , or Oakville, or Jordan. Love spring browns and summer steelies and of course kings anytime. In winter I love drifting Niagara River. Looking forward to the new season!
  22. Hey Arnaldo, hows it goin eh? I have a Scotty 1116 and I love it. I must say, these days almost all rigger manufacturers make quality products, its just a question of how much you want to spend and the features youre looking for. I can recommend the Scotty because its never let me down and its easy to use. Its belt driven, not gear driven and uses gravity to pull ball down. That way, you actually only use the motor to bring the ball up. Im running a 15 pound ball with mine and use Scotty releases. Other people will no doubt recommend what they use, but as I said the Scotty 1116 has been a quality product for me. Hope this helps. Good Fishin to ya!
