  1. i got your PM and sent a reply give me a call I can walk you through every nut and bolt on this boat.
  2. why would the turbidity be measured by lowering a disk into the water this leaves way to much open for interperatation. think if his eyes were slowly worsening over the years as happens to us all the water could be the same and he would percieve an increase in turbidity. heck imagine if he was developing cataracts. the only way to take a true measure is to run the sample through a spectrometer and measure absorbtion. the disk method is a rough and very basic example of the principle. I dont have the years of experience on seneca that some have but in the 10 years i've been in the area I would say the water has gotten clearer but this is very subjective. also as BS said a lot more was dumped into the lake pre clean water act than is now. that the lake is changing sure but as has been stated i dont think you can point to any fewer than a dozen different causes and they are not all pushing in the same way. As for the selling of perch well if the population is in decline than limiting any of the pressures on the population can potentially help. If a population is not in decline than it is maintaining balance. The pressure would not come from selling per say but from overharvest of populations in decline. The theory is that selling encourages through monetary reward the practice of overharvest beyond what the regulations allow. Better enforcement would be great but costly. Better use of technology could make management at the buyer level much more feasable. for example fish sales can all be done through an online database. Id (drivers license) is required to sell that id number is tacked to each sale and available realtime anywhare in the world. if that id number is tied to sales of qtys more than allowed to be harvested than you can mail the fine to the offender. maybe the change should be to limit the number one can sell in any given period of time? or maybe it really does have to be on a regional basis maybe a limited selling season to protect a spawn. Maybe the fingers really cant support the harvest. I dont really fish perch but I know if one population crashes it can effect the whole system so I think we all have an interest and hopefully the DEC can figure out the best option
  3. maybe they should put steroids in the wastewater. as long as the fish are doing drugs. If they test positive for HGH does that disqualify them for the record books or do they just get an astrix maybe thats the real reason fish oil makes you healthier it just gets you doped up a bit so you dont feel the pain
  4. i always found that for size of bullhead location was more important than bait. worms were always the easiest to transport and use and fishing at night keeps the sunnies to a minimum. livers work but for the love of god dont forget them in your car man they stink. leeches work but they can escape in the fridge if you keep them (dont ask). I could never use shrimp they are to tasty for me to let go. two hooks about a foot apart with a weight below keep the rod set at a low angle and put a piece of foil on the tip to see better in the lantern light. if you fish in a spawning area you'll catch a lot of similar sized fish if you are in a channel on the way to a spawning area you'll catch a nice mix. some of my favorite areas had a tendancy to produce dogfish (bowfin) as well they are always a blast at night all them teeth when its tough to see out. I kind of miss those days when I could be up all night and still function the next morning
  5. its a shame the cost of doing such is not that high and it could allow for that many more people to participate. more interest is always better for the big picture. oh well i'll have to read the highlights if i can find them
  6. throw a mix out first thing and let the fish tell you if they have a preference. always keep at least one or two of each down though that way if the preference changes as the conditions change you'll have an indicator instead of just not getting anymore hits
  7. any chance they will stream one of the meetings online for those of us who cant make the trip? I know government doesn't always keep up with technology
  8. this is a 14 foot starcraft. This boat has been rigged for trolling and includes minn kota endura 30 electric motor. cannon econo rigger with black's release big jon manual rigger with walker release tight lock triple rod holder 1 attwood adjustable rod holder two anglers pal rod holders 7 home made rod holders home made rocket launcher planer system complete with 6 aluminum rail mount rod holders pair of double ski planer boards eagle fish finder with surface temp 12 Volt marine battery 3 life jackets 6 gal gas tank trailer is included motor has a brand new starter used less than one season and I had the Carb rebuilt at the same time as the starter replaced. asking $850 looking to put some electric riggers on the new rig. great finger lakes boat or near shore boat for spring browns or fall kings. put a smaller motor on it and it can go to hemlock or canadaice. loacated in clifton springs looking to get this back out of the garage good boat for this time of year dockless launches and such
  9. small boat spring fishing can be a ton of fun especially if you hit a double or triple. I did it for years with the 14 footer. another good place to study a chart is the navionics web app you can get 1 foot contours so you can get a feel for where on the shoreline you can expect to have to turn out from shore. http://webapp.navionics.com/#@6&key=o%7DfoGzqklM
  10. damn cat started shedding all over thats when I know its time to start preping the boat
  11. I used some angle iron to create brackets that i bolted to the inside flush with the top of the rail. I than bolted a 2x6 on top of that and did a counter sink on the bolts. it made for a nice flat gunnel that is solid as a rock. we have been able to lift the boat up with boards to reposition on the trailer. in the side pic you can see the bolts coming through the rail (it had an overhang on the outside). there are more bolts on the inside through the brackets. put a coat of varnish or waterproofer on the boards and they will last. I have a board across the back for the riggers but without that I could have mounted them the side just as easy. I had a blast customizing my little boat over the years.
  12. how did you determine how much volume a given leangth of line requires? was it by mass and density or did you do a displacement experiment or did you test it out? I only ask because if you did a displacement or if you used mass and density did you factor in the filling efficency of the line? round line does not perfectly fill space on a spool there is a protion of empty space as the line layers over itself. if this isnt taken into account than the reel would hold less than the given math suggests.
  13. its not uncommon for predators to pick stones up off of bottom when attacking prey. over a lifetime of fish keeping I have seen it regularlly the fish will hit the bait so hard they strike through it and hit bottom often picking up debris as they do. I have seen my fish burp stones up hours later its fun to watch
  14. watch the wind closely and make sure you can run to harbor in a reasonable time. I fished out of a 14ft starcraft for years and did lake o in the spring. just always had a constant eye on the weather and weather channel
  15. bucket biologist strikes again think they have all the answers end up doing more damage than they could possibly know. interesting to see them get that big in there wonder what it will do to the lake long term. if its been 15 years and it only started with a few than the population hasnt had a chance to really take off yet but with a few breeders that size it might be on the brink. hopefully the pickeral in the lake will keep the population in check but will likely mean that those that do survive have the potential to get very large in a shorter amount of time
  16. we picked up a couple of these at the show to he claimed they had real sliver plated on them which caught my interest. I liked the video that showed the action especially at higher speed had a nice wobble flip wobble thing going that was nice and erractic. Looking forward to trying these for kings. He also said he was based out of sodus. Its nice to see local lure makers I have had much better luck with quality from local guys than bigger brands FLT and great lake lure co being the most notable two that i have used the past couple years I have high hopes for these spoons the join the regular rotation
  17. i think as the main show grows lotsa should consider moving the marketplace to a different weekend i know they used to do it that way. there is a different feel to the marketplace and when I go to something like that i have a different set of goals of what I am looking for than at the main show. the main show had a ton of retail and was a good place to see first hand a lot of tackle that just isnt carried in the stores that I can regularly get to. That has its appeal and will likely keep me going to shows like that on occasion. That said the main show is retail there was some used and overstock but for the vendors on the main floor they are going to make far more on the full retail prices. I enjoy the flea market feel running through a box of lures to pick the ones that my my styles has a huge appeal for me and thats what i loved about the market place last year. I dont think its unfair at all to make a comment or complaint about such a thing. If negitive feedback is never recieved than how would anything ever improve? in buisness the worst thing that can happen is someone has a bad experience and says nothing to you than there is no way to make it better. Negitive feed back is an opportunity to improve. Positive feedback just reinforces what you are doing right. I am sure it is no easy thing to put on the show but LOTSA doesnt put on the whole show. They use the proceeds to help fund the pen rearing so finding ways to gain more proceeds is a good thing. seems like there were a lot more seminars this year thats a great way to promote the fishery perhaps that is a better use of resources for this particular show and it might be benificial to do a marketplace type event in the rochester area. maybe the geenese charterboat assosiation would be interested in getting involved get a different set interested parties and catch more people from the east end. would also help to break up the winter more. Just thoughts.
  18. though my drive was only a couple hours i was also dissapointed in the marketplace compared to last year. the main show was good my brother ended up sharing fishing pics with dave genz for half an hour. Hopefully its not a trend and the market place just swings up and down from year to year.
  19. so made it out late morning no problems coming out of the launch did not see the mentioned obstruction though. Lake was a little bumpy but not terrible. ran a couple miles south and set up on a south troll. went an hour or so without a touch and corssed over to the east side and zigzagged our way back north. the weater was nice and the boat ran well and is already to set for its winter nap over the coming week. the fish were not be be had got one very small bow as we were picking up but that was it. No releases all day did not even see anything on the fishfinder. dont know if i'll try can again i dont know if i have the paitence to learn a new fingerlake. anyways do some stream fishing and some ice time to try to keep me sane till sping browns. i'm already thinking about my game plan for them.
  20. Thanks for the advice good to know about the canal would hate to do more damage to the prop on the last trip of the year Sent from my XT1080 using Tapatalk
  21. taking the boat out for the last time on sunday. going to finally try canandaguia for rainbows been saying it for years but has never happened. is the north end lauch still usable? I'm not real familar with it but it looks like it could be trouble with low water. I see a few of you posting reports so i'm hoping that means its fine. I'm hoping to be out there late morning. planning to run all my lines in the top 70 foot nice and spread from the boat. Do they typically like the faster speeds there as well. should be fun always wanted to spend some time on that lake but hate crowds so summer is a no go.
  22. i would think the size of the swim bait might have just as much effect on the drop behind the ball as that produces the majority of the drag. I have thrown and trolled a lot of swim baits for pike and they tend to run at a constant depth for me. its more a matter of how long they drop before you start the retreive or the slack to troll so with rigger I would think there would not be a ton of drop. to be on the safe side if you run the same size on all your rods they will all have the same drop so should keep the seperation you set on the riggers. from there you can vary the color if you want to try differnt sizes change all the rods at once that way you can systematiclly try the different sizes at different depths. I find they are very good at locating fish quickly as the thump of the tail will pull active fish from a distance and help you to quickly key in on an area or a pattern. i have had some luck for trout casting them off the pier as well but never made the connection to put them off a rigger. i may have to try that this spring
  23. love that first pic that is a view with nothing but anticipation
