Fair Haven this weekend
stoutner replied to joetroller's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Hey Nick, I was fishing out of Sodus on Tuesday night and the water was crazy cold for some reason. I was getting 67 on top but only 15 feet down it was 50 degrees and at 25 down it was about 46 degrees. Not sure why. I actually think this sun will do some good unless that cold water moved out. -
Ever since watching these videos I have been tying my fly leaders as long as I can with the pre-rigged flies. About 26" or so and have been doing great. I used to run them between 18"-22" but now am thinking 36"-48" might even be better. You still want the action but it needs to be easier for the fish to bite it.

Cowbells work great but I hate trolling that slow and I hate reeling them in. With or without a fish.

Scary to take a 16' alum on one of the bigger lakes?

I saw a guy out of Sodus on Lake O yesterday and today about 3 miles offshore in a boat that could not have been bigger than 14' with a small tiller motor n it. He was at least 3 miles offshore. ...and today was getting pretty snotty out there. -
We went after em again this morning (Sunday) and it was much slower. We finally found the fish in about 90 feet of water and went 3 for 6. Did manage 2 Kings about 17 - 18 lbs and lost another screamer after he ripped about 200 feet off our diver and just came unglued. The other fish we landed was a 10 lb Laker. My girlfriend fought and landed her first King Salmon ever today. It was her first mainly because I have a hard time talking her into getting up at 4 am and going fishing. When we were done, she says "are we fishing next Saturday or next Sunday?" and "We should get up even earlier next weekend" (We got up at 3:45 this morning) I think the big King hooked her

Nice job Bill!

These are great for what you are trying to do. http://www.torpedodivers.com/ I have a few and have used them a little bit. My opinion is if you want to go deeper than 10 color you should just use a diver.

Best advise I can give is to spool up a reel with as much steel line as possible. I also just saw some really sweet trolling rods at Bass Pro with Stainless Steel Eyelets same style as what you would use for a copper rod/reel. They were only $24.00 each. 3 to 1 is a good rule of thumb...for the most part. Also, if using steel line, I would get away from the Magnums and use standard sized divers. They are a hell of a lot easier to reel in and will still give you that 3 -1 rate. I have used and still have my Magnum sized divers but I haven't run them in about 2 seasons. I can easily get to 100 feet down with my wire setup running a flasher fly with standard diver out 300 feet. I know because when I get into about 98 FOW they start hitting bottom.

I did launch because I had my boat out of the water but I keep my boat in the first slip at Warrens Hook Line & Sinker. It is in the slip nearest to their boat launch ramp. I headed out the chute at about 6 am give or take a few minutes. -

Nice Job. We were out there around the same time as you with similar results. Our best was as we were pulling rods in about 150 FOW right in front of the chute our only rod still in the water fires and we land another nice 12 or 13 lb king to end the day. Man was fishing great this past weekend. I hope it continues like this for the rest of the Summer. -

WOW! -
Andy, You are going to have to experiment and get it so it is pretty close to full for it to be somewhat accurate. I agree with what Big Dave says but it is nice if it is fairly accurate. That way if someone says they are hitting on the diver 250 back, then you can try to match it with your diver 250 back.

Nice job. I think we might have seen you out there. We saw one boat in shallower on Saturday evening. We fished from the silos down to Dean's and back. Started in 185 FOW and moved into about 100 FOW and butchered them on the divers. Our biggest was about 8 1/2 lbs. The rest were 4 - 5 lbs and a couple of really small ones about 12" long.
