  1. Cool..... I didn't realize anyone made them.. so like most things ...I made them myself when I couldn't find what I needed. I first used mine on salt water years ago.
  2. TIP: For those of you who fish from friend's boats and would rather use your own release set up.... I've used this setup for over 20 years and it works great. The release is the OUTRIGGER version of the Black and I then use a very large (and strong) split ring and then a large salt water coast lock swivel (again very strong one) and I put the coast lock on the split ring and then put it on the release at the bottom and then SOLDER the split ring. You can then just clip this rig on the existing swivel of the downrigger and then attach their weight to the swivel on your Black release.
  3. That's great Ed....guess it pays to get pissed one in awhile
  4. Yep spoons on top and out F/F closer in and toward the bottom
  5. Man....sure make s me miss the saltwater fishery....nothing like it....never know whats going to be at the other end of the line....

Just a suggestion for next time if you want laker action....one of the most effective methods on that lake seems to be vertical jigging with fairly heavy jig which could have been done drifting from your description of the water conditions...secondly, it is a very bottom oriented fishery when it comes to trout- especially lakers. The fish you marked at that depth could have been trout but they also could have been smallmouths suspended that perhaps have moved out from the shallow water (spawning areas)...usually not 90 ft down though so maybe juvenile lakers there. For action with the whole bunch of people you described jigging would have been the preferred method but if you go back yourself try either using Seth Green rigs pulled deep (with a variety of spoons until you see what type/size hits) or downriggers just off bottom (with sliders and heavier spoons tight to the ball or cowbells/peanuts) and at drop offs near the bluff area. You could start out right out from the launch ramp and troll toward the bluffs (and slightly north around the "corner" then head across toward Marlena Point and then back toward Gibson"s landing headed toward Hammondsport on the west side. Usually the 80-125 ft. range is where to be (water-wise)
  7. Ah.....the joy of modern technology.... What I want to hear about is (like with the old copper rig) you snag up on bottom How does that work out (especially if it fails to release)? I have a similar copper set up by the way... .
  8. Nice report... good going! The flatfish on copper is an old school technique and also using a black (or dark colored) Twin Minnow as well...deadly this time of year and early Spring as well. They seem to think they are fresh water Sculpin.... The cotton seems really bad this year just about everywhere.....including lawns.
  9. I've had my Cannon 10a's since 1985 and I've only had to replace the power cords because of weathering and uv effects. They still have the same wire on them and I've never had a problem with either one of them despite thousands of hours of use. There aren't many things that last that long anymore....unfortunately many products are now manufactured out of the country and the use of plastic parts etc. it is the accepted way of doing business. I hope Cannon (and many other companies for that matter) takes a close look at things and goes back to their previous quality control standards.
  10. Ed - Sorry about your situation pardner...but laughed my a.. off about the 'big words" ...man...you guys never give up.... I've heard some good things about contacts with Cannon and them standing by the product so hopefully they will be able to do something for you. It sure is frustrating though....a couple weeks ago I took a brand new Okuma Convector out of the box and put a bunch of braid on it and then when I went to test the drag there was none.....what the h ever happened to something called "quality control" on these products? Good luck with it Ed. Les
  11. If too big by couple inches why not have it cut to size and re-weld it? or cut it and put in small extension if too small...?
  12. Ditto on what Rick said. The release problem is probably related to the stretch factor in the mono and the 30 wire will solve it.
  13. Hey 58 Johnson thanks for resurrecting that old size chart...I had forgotten about it.... I had it on paper years ago. At one time I had over 300 Sutton's of many shapes and sizes but many were subsequently donated to the fish Gods on various lakes
  14. Yes I knew John and Miriam quite well...she was hell of a mechanic too. I night fished there from 1975 to about 1988 or so. Used to set up near (captain) John Oravec and we used to hammer the big browns and rainbows at the south end. Nothing like just falling asleep and hearing that drag going out with a big one on Most of my bait came from putting a gas lantern out on my downrigger boom calling in the bugs and then the sawbellies would rise up to get them and I used my smelt net to get my bait. The big browns and rainbows would often be mixed in with the bait and sometimes you could see them down there....a lot of fun.
  15. Looks like you have them dialed in Ed. Nice fish and report. Keep hammering them. Les
  16. Don't mess with them if you don't have to....if you do... have it serviced by certified folks.
  17. ssafran21 - I think I did see you...we've just got to stay at it....I think they are about to turn on soon here. You are right about the recreational boaters....most of them don't have a clue about boating...especially the jet skiers. In the past I've had them go right over my lines...after 11 AM or so it's their lake....it makes me remember WHY I used to night fish at the south end
  18. There's 30 Suttons and 10 are 44's out by the barge in the middle of Seneca compliments of the barge support cables grabbing two of my Seth Greens back when you could run 15 points per rod....need a submarine to get them though exactly 500 ft. of water ...and yes I almost puked when it happened
  19. Yeah I guess "calm" wouldn't have exactly covered the memorial Day weekend would it?
  20. Right now Seneca seems to be doing better than most..... Launch at the State Park at the north end Pay launch) or old Chamber Of Commerce (where construction is going on nearer Geneva would probably be closest but Sampson State Park on the East side ,(Rt.# 96) toward the middle of the lake is a real good place to start out too. maximum depth over 500 ft. off on an angle south from Sampson. Lakers, Rainbows, Landlocks, and just abut everything else but Chinooks and Cohos
  21. Good point.....Wellesley Island there is pretty neat...a lot of large pike right nearby too. I don't know how far in advance they need to reserve cabins but they are great....all the comforts of home if they can get one. Just have to be careful not to venture into Canadian waters accidentally while fishing....the boundary line isn't too far off shore.
  22. Yep ..should be fine if you are using 30 pound wire
  23. I've used small dipsys on outriggers for about 25 or 30 years with Black outrigger releases. You have to experiment with the tension a bit between the outriggers and the dipseys so they each release properly but they work pretty well especially in shallow say 20ft of water or so in the Spring and Fall. I also use them out very deep (middle of Finger Lakes) when the rainbows are out over deep water but not down very far (e.g. feeding on flies on surface etc.). I have tried medium sized dipseys but they generate a little too much torque (for me at least) to be effective and are better run on wire. I often run the small dipseys at near the max 3 setting to left and right to get them as far away from the boat as possible....if i want them to go a bit deeper I use the zero setting on each and the separation still works well from my other stuff. but....I use them on mono not wire....the wire is best used without releases in my arsenal at least. Even the rubber band approach led to slight wire kinking for me when I tried it out....but Spike is right an Aftco roller release (used mainly in saltwater) could do it without kinking.
