Although Tohatsu makes the Merc smaller motors they are not identical. I compared mine with a Merc firsthand and the Merc is built to different specs and the frame of it appears stouter. I wanted lightweight to stay similar weight-wise to my former 2 stroke on my bracket. Onlineoutboards is about the best for price around and free shipping etc.If it were me I'd be going with at least an 8hp regardless of make. The fuel consumption differences on these new motors makes that consideration nearly irrelevant. I can hear other fishermen talking to me from other boats over the 4 stroke I couldn't with my two stroke. They seem to become even a bit quieter when fully broken in with some hours on them too or at least it seems it. Although hooking up a 4 stroke kicker to the main fuel supply is popular and may be convenient it also has a potential drawback and that is if the main fuel becomes corrupted somehow and you need to get off the water right away it could be a real problem so I keep a separate 3 gal. fuel tank as the source for the kicker and you can easily troll all day with that size tank without problem.

If my memory serves me correctly some of the specific hookups for auto trolling devices for Tohatsu require at least an 8 hp Tohatsu I think.

I have a long shaft 9.8 4 stroke electric start Tohatsu that replaced a 9.9 Johnson 2 stroke. The increased torque of the 4 stroke actually allowed me to get rid of my EZ steer connector for my 135 Merc Optimax (18 ft Boston Whaler) so I don't need any connector at all even into moderate wind. It sips fuel and is relatively quiet running. It weighs about 90 lbs.Very happy with it.

An excellent choice if they want to learn about Finger lakes fishing.

WTG Sean. I had a 10 plus rainbow here on Canandaigua a couple weeks ago that was double wrapped in the line and came in sideways and ran back and forth horizontally and it took me 20 minutes to get him in and it felt like I had a hundred pound weight on the line....so...who knows

A 300 copper is a very versatile tool to have in the toolbox

Two main methods depending on the particular spoon and the desired action: a) SOLID RING Ball bearing swivel smallest size practical, black in color, with a rounded snap. I usually buy the swivels separately and marry them up with a small duolock snap for best results, b) use a small #8 Sprobarrel swivel about 3 or 4 ft up the leader with a small duolock at the end. There can be slight differences in the action of the particular spoon being used based on which method is selected....may seem arbitrary or irrelevant but attention to detail can make a difference; especially when fish are "fussy"

Great read Steve. I know your grandmother (Barb) and your folks are very proud of you and Roy would probably be lighting up another cigar after seeing the article. It's good to see that Donny's boat is being put to such good use too

It happens in many if not most lakes and seems most prominent in larger lakes. It is a complex relationship between water temperatures, ambient air temperature, wind (direction and velocity), and underwater current. It happens when dense water descends to bottom pushing the bottom water upward (creating an inversion) and the wind distributes that particular less dense water either shoreward or out away from shore. Sometimes fishing is good where the boundary of where the warm and colder water meet or intersect. I am not a scientist but this is my understanding of it.

Sean I think it is much more of a problem trolling as the stuff is patchy in the water for one thing. Good luck out there bud. Try the drop off right out in front of the launch as there usually are lakers sitting around there along with other species 50 to 70 ft maybe to start?

I'd follow my gut hunch and travel the east side We trolled a lot of west side Monday, orange didn't work but green and UV did. didn't try purple. The liked the perch colored size 7 rapala too. A lot of weeds scattered out in the 100-170 ft range monday and the fleas were definitely there on wire or connections of leadcore. I wouldn't have much braid beneath the water or it could be flea city

Normally I run them clean but there are situations where I do use them (e.g. walleyes etc.)

I bought my Tohatsu 9.8 from them best price around and no shipping charges. No problems.

Sutton's are very near and dear to my heart too and my grandfather used them extensively on Seneca Lake (around 1910 or so Generation 1 in every sense of the word I guess) but I have always been unclear on just when they started up etc. and the history. Thanks Mark You are "the man" when it comes to the Sutton's

Wow! I've used them for about 50 years and never have seen that one and I've used every version of them, but once I have them adjusted where I want them (about 3 1/2 lbs or so on the scale) I don't often mess with the tension either.

My son and I fished 1/2 day trolled north from Dean's from 40-205ft and then south from Dean's (all on west side) from 26 ft to 270ft (2.4-3.0 hoping to avoid lakers). Stayed within 40 ft of surface with everything (2 riggers a 3 and a 4 color leadcore and two wire dipsys up tight (running tight about 40 ft). One small rainbow on rigger 35 ft down (on slider), another a bit larger on Sutton 71 with pink UV tape at 25 ft., a sublegal landlock on a perch Rapala, behind 4 color,5-6 lb laker on same 4 color, and another 5-6 lb laker on rigger 25 ft. down. Had another pretty savage hit on the 4 color on boards) but was gone after taking the drag out. Everything released OK. All action around 150 - 170 ft. Didn't see much in closer at all (bait or fish). Fleas were pretty bad on everything including the 150 lb downrigger once. A lot of weeds floating around out toward the middle on the west side. Beautiful day but that sun got very hot so we called it.
