  1. As a dumb walleye guy, just been using a jig with a live crawdad. Seems to be working ok. Usually deeper water though. Wondering, if I used something like below, it world work. Got a bunch of these from my walleye days. http://www.riverwalleyes.com/fishing-spoons.html
  2. I always liked that about the site. I am relatively new to the area, and I will tell ya, I could not have experienced the fishing I have experienced without the help of a LOT of folks on here. The list is pretty long, and memory even worse. But its quite common. Lake Winnebago WI was good for that. Tough to find a good resource. Now, even in the days of the internet, I found more success in my "soft" approach. Nothing beats a quick talk over a beer or coffee. Connect, then stay connected. And I think that drives the resentment. A quick note with good info cant be beat, but develop the relationship first. There could be a lot of good advice your missing because a fishing tip. Always try to help where I can. Love the comment about kids and fishing. Its even more motivation. Sometimes the transformation is truly incredible!
  3. Unfortunately, no advice from me. Would like to hear the suggestions. Also, do you really need a trolling motor bow mount? Is it really needed. (sorry, dont want to appear hijacking...)
  4. what a solid bust today. Marked a few, but now question whether they were fish or not. Ran out to 65 -66 fow and drowned some worms and waterlogged some renoskys. Decided to fish a few off shore humps. Smallies cooperated nicely. Worked a nice off shore hump in 45 FOW. They were loaded. Not as big as the last outing but far more of them. And yanking em out from deeper water really gives you a good fight. Plenty of suspended bait balls with nothing around. Water was close to 77 degrees (Yikes!). I think I am gonna stow about the Targa one evening.....if you know what I mean!!
  5. Nice. I hear this may be the first year for crossbow usage in NY state. Even a novice like me can now hunt! Its been quiet for me the last few weeks. Out of town travel, and crappy weather/winds have put a damper on things. Should be changing that pretty soon though. Hopefully more time out in the next few weeks.
  6. Havent heard a peep outta shorthanded. He must be smokin em!
  7. Like Gill T said, not a bad start. Try to grab two rigs if possible. a 5 color and a 10 color. Both will be effective on erie.
  8. I feel for ya. I am a walleye guy, but I will tell ya, I get most of my guidance for salmonoids here. Some very sharp sticks. I wish I can name em all, but they all helped in me getting fish on ontario. Keep up the good work.
  9. Nice work Larry. Those big cranks are sometimes the ticket.
  10. Wow, very nice fish indeed. I think I am gonna give handlining a try this fall/winter in the river. I bet that would work pretty good. Is that lake erie bite still going on meat, or did you guys move to reefies yet?
  11. Well, I havent been getting out much. Checked wind report for saturday and said it was nice. Seemed dicey to me. Ended up in the river by strawberry island fishing for bass (yuck!). Did spend this evening ridding the boat of the spiders.....jeez, I never seen so many in my life. Thick, goo-eey ones too. Stomp on them on the floor and I gotta stain the size of 1/2 dollar. That ended quickly. Sprayed this evening though, so expecting some good things. Hopefully this weekend, blow is good. Have been working on getting my perch bite going too though, with the fall coming up of course. (many thanks to jimski2).
  12. Ray, your back dont count.... I see the opposite. Lake is too warm and will take a while to cool down. I see lots of snow by christmas. Hopefully, the cold weather will firm up and staey (ice fishing) or stay around freezing (ahh, I remember my bay of quinte January trips)....Either way I am good with it.
  13. Add to that the cost of marina fuel. I usually run the 3000 to 3200 RPM band. Just fine for me. Nice to know if I gotta get on it, there is a whole lotta throttle left.
  14. 2013 Starcraft fishmaster for sale....LOADED! Sweet rig... 196 Fishmaster
  15. ditto on Kevins stuff. I like to think, and I may be wrong, on the velocity of bleeding, especially from the gills. If she is a good bleeder, then tend to keep her. But if slight, then let her go. We go through the same thingon bay of quinte in the winter. Most pike in the livewell, most walleyes released. A couple of deep hookers, we take special care in releasing.
  16. Stupid weather. Just got done storming. Nuts.
  17. That sounds like a good plan. Back when I was in the midwest, had a couple of buddies that put on "on water" training type charters. 4 hour class, 4 guys, $150 a person. You got a pretty good idea for when and where to run your programs. Lets face, most programs are the same, tweaked for the individual. They mainly did this for Salmon, since a lot of guys in Chicago, wanted to get into it, but already invested in boat, gear, etc. It was pretty cool if you ask me. I ll bring beer....
  18. Yep, thats the number I call. Pretty straight forward. Reference the number if there is an issue. Nice work on the smallies. We did the same thing. Plain black jig and a whole crab.
  19. I had to drive to wisconson to pick mine up. 750 miles one way. You dont want to see my gas bill for the ride back. 8 MPG dont cut it. I would check around erie, PA, cleveland OH, ashtabula OH, etc. Good luck in your search.
  20. I had to. The boat came with an aluminum prop. Didnt get that one at all. A 250 and an aluminum prop, go figure. Went to a tempest 24. Made a TON of difference. I see a lot of starcrafts on erie. Most have the the 115. Not a bad setup by the way. They are good boats. If you find one with max hp, I would jump on it.
  21. John, nice. Kevin, you da man..We are gonna run some jets and hope for da best
  22. Starcraft is terrible from an entry boaters standpoint. Vastly underpowered. Thats why you can get em cheap. I run a 2100 Fishmaster. Its got a 250 Pro XS. Max hp. I am sure the 196 works with the smaller engine, but for me, if it aint max'd, I am out.
  23. Thanks jimski. Right on the money. Its always nice to experiment. Like kevin said, my 3oz snapweight program is my bread and butter. Very confident in that one. Leadcore is coming around. Still working on the jets40 and torpedo. Just having a fun time with the walleyes on lake erie this year. Thanks guys. Myturn, why use the braid? Why not straight mono? I figure the stretch would be a good thing. I used to pull a TON of core on the rivers, eg mississippi and illinois. Had that program dialed in nicely. Not too deep, and the core tracked great. You had to have to good bait selection, eg, SR5 on the inside, and SR7 on the outside. It would cut down on the "handshakes". Once in a while I would throw a snapweight down on the core. Just grind the bottom for saugers. Very effective.
  24. Haha kevin, been running the 3oz program for some months now. Been working pretty good for me. Always nice to try new stuff. But your spot on in your depth and leads.
