  1. You could use a smartphone or tablet for navigation. Navionics has a great app that goes for 10-15 bux. Works very well, and if you already have a smartphone, cheap. Then you can look at an inexpensive and simple fishfinder. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  2. Forgot to mention the flies out there last night too. Horrible. But they were spotty. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  3. Out of the channel solo at about 4:30pm and headed NW towards clearer water. It took a bit. Into about 70fow before I was clearing the chocolate milk colored water and debris. I was immediately marking fish as I set up, at 50 feet down. Set a rigger at 50 with a warrior ladderback spoon, rigger at 40 with a smurf silver streak spoon, and dipsy at 120, setting 3 with 42nd spin doctor and matching atommik fly. Immediately an 8# king took the warrior spoon. Set it again and it took another hit with nothing there by the time I got to the rod. Attempted to put a couple cheaters on but all they did was catch weeds in the water. Smurf spoon got pounded. Lost an absolute brute because of a barrel swivel that opened up and broke. Easily would have been the biggest spring King I ever boated. Set a DW 42nd in it's place. Never took another hit on that rigger. Got another hit on the Warrior spoon and while fighting a 10lb king, the dipsy took a hit. Boated both. Laker on the dipsy. Continued to work the 70fow range but all was silent after that and in at 7:45. Working the mud as I was coming in was useless. Marked fish in all depths but I doubt they would have seen my presentation. It's been several days since all of the rain, and the lake is muddier tonight than it was immediately following. As I was coming into the channel, I noticed 100's of trails in the water and alewives jumping everywhere. There had to have been 100's of seagulls flying and diving all around as well after them. I've been wondering if all that muddy water extends down to the bottom, or it's just the surface? I would guess from top to bottom? I've fished out of the bay for 4 years now and never seen alewives in the channel. Is this unusual? Explains maybe why in years past I've pounded Kings just outside of the bay in the spring. Any guesses on when a thermocline sets up this year? The lake surface temp outside of the mudline is still 45 degrees. Also found a trench that drops from 70 to 90 and back to 70 outside of the Genesee. Navionics shows a sewer line there? And why do I have better runs when I am solo than when I take others out? Never fails...
  4. Ive never thought bay warmwater fishing was great, but it can be good. We fished for bass saturday also and caught several but nothing exceeding 2 lbs. Also caught some white perch and rockies. All on artificials. Jigs, but mostly moving crankbaits real slow. Water clarity was terrible throughout the entire bay. I shy away from worm like soft plastics when there is very murky water because those are more of a sight type lure. Water temps were around 60. Something you can work slow but that will vibrate or rattle in the water could help. As for lake fishing, between someone getting seasick and the crap in the water, we gave up early. Most days have netted ok numbers out there for me. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  5. Maybe find someone with a depth raider to test your probe on their wire and display? Wish I could help but dont have one. I look at the bend of my riggers and dipsy rods to figure out downspeed. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  6. Edit: had the dates wrong. Should be 5/10 & 5/11 Headed east 5/10 morning. Worked 20 to 50fow. Small brown on a bomber long a, pearl of moon flatlined. Another small brown on a dw 42nd spoon off a rigger, and a laker on a dw wonderbread off the other rigger. No kings so i foowed the pack towards the genny. Warmer stained water but I didnt get a hit and called it done. Again headed east 5/11 am but found warmer stained water. Setting the first rigger line with a warrior ladderback spoon and had the twist around my finger when it got hit. The fish pulled it so tight I could not get my finger out of the damn loop. Fortunately it bounced off and I did not lose the spoon. Made it to shipbuilders in 20fow and the same spoon rigger just ripped. Rod tip never went up and just shot down pulling line. 3 leaps out of the water and 10 minutes later my first good size king of the year at 15lbs. Picked up 2 browns after circling around. 1 on the same spoon, the other on a custom warrior spoon from Salmon Slammer. Last fish of the day was a 6lb bow over 35fow off the rigger and that same custom spoon. Headed in at 10 something.
  7. I am a couple hours away and have made the trip 3 times in 2 years. Have spent half the time casting and half trolling. Finally got my 1st ever today in the middle of the lake trolling. Flatlining a deep diving jointed thunderstick. What a thrill. I've had dreams of catching this fish for a a LONG time. This one never left the net and I was alone so couldn't get a pic with the fish. Bummed about that. It swam away happily which I am grateful for. Was around 33-35".
  8. Looks like you had a pretty good run this weekend. Congrats! No point in starting another thread on ibay. We got a late start at 9am and drove in figure 8's till a little after 12pm. All presentations at 30-50 over 60-90 fow. Every fish came from 50 over 80 fow. Went 3 for 4. Nice mature coho on 10 color core with Stinger Mag green dolphin. Skipper king came from 55 rigger on an NK NBK. And a brown came from the 10 color core on the same Stinger Mag green dolphin. 45 rigger took a hit on either the DW SS 42nd, or the cheater DW wonderbread. Once again I got nada on dipsy's. Even tried throwing some plugs on. Could not get into the mature kings this weekend. Hopefully on the pier soon. And btw, stinger mag spoons are crap. If they aren't losing their paint jobs, they bend on you!
  9. We also fished out of ibay. It was indeed very slow. 75-140 fow. All presentations at 30-80 down. Tried northwest towards the river and out. Then back towards the bay. North of the bay was where they were. Didn't boat our first fish until 10am, and then it was a flurry for a short time. Ended up 4 for 6. 2 pretty browns, steelie, and a 12 lb coho. Our screen wasn't so hot. Rigger spoon bite the best. 10 color core with a blueberry muffin took the steelhead and a shaker. Caramel dolphin stinger mag took a brown and the coho. And a black with orange NK took the other brown. Nothing on flashers/flies w/dipsies.
  10. We had the same story to tell tonight. Lots of follows but couldn't get one rod to fire. Out till dark.
  11. That was part of the equation. I was out with Dad, whom I may only get a chance to fish with once a year typically. Fishing was slow on a gorgeous day, but we both boated a quality fish.
  12. Just looking for feedback on what the consensus may be on what a trophy fish starts at for each species. Kings, Coho, Browns, Steelhead, Atlantics, and Lakers. I caught a fish this weekend that would have placed in the LOC top 10 for certain (in it's class, had I actually entered). It was considerably larger than any other I had caught before. Given that, I rushed it to the taxidermist but have been somewhat mixed about that decision since. This site can make it difficult to judge what a true trophy is. Obviously it's often the largest fish that are reported. Any and all opinions welcome.
  13. Leader lengths are the first thing I think of. I used to struggle with divers until I took some suggestions on the length of fluoro leader between diver and attractor/lure. Length of leader from attractor to fly/etc is also important. No downriggers? Down temp? The right depth is probably the single most important factor. I don't currently have a rigger probe, but I do have a sensor to read temp and then set my depths around the thermocline. If you don't have riggers, you could get a sensor that will attach to a dipsy and measure that way.
  14. The part I really have a hard time with is how he knew your real name. How is that? A little disturbing and unsettling. Who did he have on board? Someone you know possibly? Weird. I've twice been harassed on the water by the same captain. It soured me to the idea of ever using a charter to fish. But, I was invited on a trip and went. Had a very positive experience, and I realized that Captains are like all human beings. Some of them are unfortunately a******s, but most are decent people.
  15. Left port at 4:30. Started setting lines at 180 fow. Didn't even bother with dipsy's because mine are all mono. Rigger 1 at 130 with a dreamweaver glow wonderbread and rigger 2 at 95 with an NK NBK. Had a cheater on both. Stinger Mag purple alewife and blueberry muffin something or other. Neither cheaters produced anything. First fish struck the wonderbread but dropped immediately. Next hit came from the same wonderbread with a king in the 10 lb range. 240 fow. Just as I put that fish back in, rigger 2 fires and it's a nice steelhead that does a terrific leap at the back of the boat and then takes a darting run. That fish was in and then released. By the time I got set back up and turned, I was in around 350 fow. Last fish of the night took rigger 2 NBK and SCREAMED out line. Nearly a half hour later I netted(by myself!) a beautifull female at 27.5 lbs. It's been a few years since I got one this size. fish are getting dark. Pulled lines and headed in at 7 pm. A pretty good year so far. I believe based my own experience and the reports of other that fish are trending larget this year. Maybe I'll get a crack at that 30lb mark.
  16. I can't offer any help with the genny. but, I can tell you don't bother with braddocks. too shallow and you will NOT catch smallies there. wouldn't bother with I-bay either. you will see them on occasion at the inlet/outlet in the spring, but otherwise impossible to target there.
  17. What it's all about. Sharing a great day of fishing with family. 29 lber is enough to get just about anyone "hooked".
  18. Not much to report. Out headed NE at 5:45. Started setting up in 120 fow, 85 down on the rigger. Set out a dipsy and then lead core. Waves were a bit too much for just me and my smaller boat and it wasn't fun so I decided to turn around at 140. Rigger popped and I fought a King that surfaced and came unbuttoned at the boat. Pulled lines and went closer in for browns. Set lines but waves weren't much better so I headed in about 8:00. Maybe some calm nights this week. I think the fishing would have been good today, and suspect others with bigger boats probably had a good pick today.
  19. Good for you! That is a good looking fish and they really aren't that common in that size, despite how many you hear reported. I think it's like catching that 5 lb bass. I have not passed 29 lbs. 30 lbs to me seems like this unattainable size I just can't seem to get to. My 2nd king years ago was 29 lbs, off a pier.
  20. Noticed your left handed baitcaster. I too use only lefties. I am not left handed, but it doesn't feel right using my right hand to turn the reel. My stronger arm is my right, and the one I instinctively use to set the hook. Congrats on a solid trip! Now it's time to get you back out trolling!
  21. Impressive. I like the sounds of this. Given how often I can even get out, I should get several years out of that kind of rig. Thanks guys for your responses. Sk8man, maybe you should consider a trolling course! On Canandaigua Lake, maybe. Hard enough figuring that lake out...
  22. I don't think it would be usefull at all. The truth is, in 10 fow or less, it isn't going to show you anything unless there is a dropoff or hump. Fish will almost never show on it. That is because the cone is so small at that depth range. Take a boat out in 5-10 fow and see what I mean. You'll see very few fish on a graph.
  23. I went on a charter recently and the captain was using wire on rods that had no twilli tips or rollers. I asked him about it and he said it wasn't needed. He said it is piano wire and they were typical trolling rods. I haven't set up wire divers, just mono. Everyone here seems to claim you must use a tip or rollers with wire. Could someone clear this up?
  24. Followed up again this morning alone at 5:30. same area. Went 5 for 6. 4 kings 1 steelie. All lures at 60 or around there. Started dropping first rod in 100 fow and had a mid teens king tugging before I even set the rod in the rigger holder. Dw wonderbread spoon. Set the same rod again and it again immediately fired with another king around 10 lbs. Finally got 3 lines in and got a hit on blue spinny/fly combo. Ripped out some line and dropped it. Another mid teens king on the wonderbread. Steelie hit the leadcore with an orange patterned stinger. I think monkey puke or something. It started getting rough at 180 fow so I turned around and started pulling lines to find I had been dragging a skipper king on that wonderbread. Headed to shore at 7:30.
  25. I convinced my wife to go out with me for the first time ever. She was a good sport and drove while my daughter and I did the catching. We only had 2 hours from 6:30-8:30, but went 2 for 4. 100-170 fow. Boated a 22 lb male, and 20 lb female king. Another fish managed to break away my diver/42nd spinny and fly after already bringing in that 22 lber. the 20 lber came off a dreamweaver SS wonderbread 60 feet down on one of the riggers. The other hit was off a blue spinny/fly combo on a diver 160 back, but gone by the time we got to the rod. I haven't been out since the spring, and it sure was nice to get into it this good.
