  1. Took my boat out today after installing my X4. At every speed my GPS and X4 arent even close. At slow speed I seem to be about 1mph off. For instance my gps shows 3.5 mph and the X4 reads 2.8. At higher speed it gets much further apart. I cant even use my speedo under 5mph to see which one is accurate. Do I assume the Fish hawk is accurate? Jeff
  2. Well I was at work today so both of you had a much better day then me
  3. Dude, Im dieing over here reading your report and seeing your pics! Im heading up in a week and can not wait! Im hoping to get my son his first King! Thanks for the inspiration
  4. Thanks for the report! Looks like it was a beautiful morning. Good Luck!
  5. Many years ago when I had a 14' vhull with a 9.9hp and small down riggers we went out of the Salmon River in early Oct. Fish were jumping all around us. We put some Jplugs on the riggers about 5' down in only 10'-15' of water. Unfortunately I only had those squeeze type releases on my riggers. The fish would hit the jplugs so hard my motor would actually sputter. We didnt boat a single fish but we must have had 10 hook ups. It was a blast. Believe it or not, over the winter months we used to catch lakers using Jplugs at 90' down. Have not tried that in many years cause I just got another boat this spring but we used to get some good lakers on those big plugs. Does anyone use them with flashers? Also do you use them when the fish are still in open water or only pre run? Thanks, Jeff
  6. Ill try the rubber band too. Where I fish in NJ we target Lakers and it seems that almost every time Im pulling in my lines I realize I have been dragging one around for who knows how long. These releases are great because you get good hook sets but if you go too tight some fish cant pop them out. I started cranking my rods down with a pretty good bend. When a small laker would hit I could tell by watching the rod, it would slowly go up and down I guess after the fish is hooked they would swim towards the boat causing some tension to release on the line so the rod would slowly come up indicating there was a fish on. For me I would rather have them tighter then loose to ensure a good hook set. Where I fish you never know if your gonna get a skipper or a 20# laker so mine are always tight. But it would be nice to dial them in for Lake Ont.
  7. Awesome!!! I got it now! Thanks a million... Im going to try this out this weekend here in NJ so that when I come up to Lake Ontario I'll have a clue on what Im doing Thanks to everyone again for the unbelievable advice
  8. Thanks for all the great info... Ive been copying and pasting all the info. Ive been getting from everyone on this site and printing it out on a word doccument so I can bring it all with me when Im on the lake cause there is no way I can remember all this awesome information. Thank you guys for all the help and hints When you guys refer to a cheater, are you talking about stacking another line above the lower line? Does anyone use spinnies with spoons? Im sorry, I dont understand what you mean. Can you explaine what you mean when you refer to a fixed or free slider? And are you talking about running two spoons on one line? Again, please forgive my ignorance. I fish a lake in NJ that we do very well with bows, browns, and lakers while trolling, but this salmon trolling is totally new to me. Thanks again for the info! I think with all this info, I will be able to put it together and get some fish in the boat.
  9. Sorry for all the questions lately but Im trying to learn as much as I can to get one (hopefully more) salmon in the boat. If you were running only 4 lines, two on riggers and 2 on dipsies with wire, what would be the best options for lure/bait? On the dipsy roda I want to try, 250' line out, spin dr flasher with a sushi rig on one and a spin dr. and bait holder rig. My question is on my riggers, what is my best option? Spoons, plugs, flasher/fly combo's? Do I run flashers on all 4 lines? Im so overwhelmed and the more Im reading the more Im getting confused it seems. Any advice would be greatly apreciated.
  10. Yes Im right around the block from Greenwood... Hows RV been?? Yes there are some real nice Walleyes in GWL, but with all the boat traffic and 84 degree surface temps they went down. We did very well in May and June nailing them with plugs on the surface. The best night we had we nailed 9 eyes with the largest being 9# and 11#. Great night I absolutely will... I cant wait to get there. Thanks everyone
  11. Im going to be going out for my first time on 8-19 and we are going to be staying in Pulaski so will launch out of the Salmon rive in Port Ontario. My questions is, and I know this sounds rediculus but where do I go? Im not looking for coordinates or anyones secret spots but can anyone help us get in an area where we have some potential of boating a fish? I believe I am covered on lures, spinnies, flies, plugs, spoons, I ordered an X4. It will be myself and my son, any help at all would be huge. Jeff
  12. Great report! Love thos big browns.. Great to see that young lady smiling with those beautiful fish! Congrats to her
  13. I have not personally used it before but from what I have read on here I see alot of people do with good results.
  14. Can anyone tell me when the best time is to use J Plugs?
  15. Oh man, Im sorry to hear this For now on when Im away everything comes off the boat and the boat gets covered.. People suck!!
  16. Yup that sucks!! Had a hook go thru my thumb when I was a kid. My dad almost passed out when he took me to the ER and they cut the hook, drilled my nail, and pushed it up thru the new hole in my nail But I do remember it hurt like a SOB
  17. People suck! I had someone steal my trailer liscence plate and a trailer fender at the Hudson River and I had a 2 hour drive home. Granted nobody could have been hurt but was enough to cause me grief at DMV
  18. Thank God that someone was there to save them
  19. We do a similar thing with the night time Rainbows that we catch in the summer here in NJ.. We do alot of night time drifting for suspended Rainbows. Most times we unhook them with out removing them from the water but even then reviving them can be tough with 80 degree surface temps. So I would thread a piece of 2# test mono through the gill plate and tie the line to the cannon ball and slowly lower them back down to 40' where they were suspended. Then we would just drift with them online. I doubt very much that the 2# line hurts them and it brakes very easily once the fish gains even a little strength. Only one time I pulled a fish back up that didnt make it. I think that if you can get them back in the cool water quickly they have a much better chance of surviving. Like Spike said, it can be a PITA but if Im going to release them I want to give them the best chance of survival.
