  1. The coastal data is just that . If you fish inland go with lake maps but you will be adding a card anyways as you will find them more complete than any preloaded data . this is what I have found for what it's worth. Garmin has some very good data cards available.
  2. Has anyone installed and used a in hull transducer and how did it work out compared to a transom mount unit. Drilling a hole for a through hull is not a option for me . Looking at a Airmar P79 50-200 degree for my Garmine 4212 and Gms 24 sounder . Thanks for any input.
  3. X2 on the Spro HD 3 also works well for wire slide divers and roller rods.
  4. Walker peddled that same cable for years it was questionable then and still is now .
  5. John I was under the understanding that the Taloras used a Fugi reel seat the only ones I have seen damaged were from over tightening to the extreme and split the inner collar damaged yes but still usable.
  6. I somewhat agree Tim but a lot depends on the time of year the early spring the braids tend to get bit better the summer and fall the wire seems to work better for me anyways.
  7. If the rods are new wind them down tight they will seat. The plastic like material inside the ring will conform to the foot on the reel. If the rods are well used you may have to shim the reel foot with a turn or two of tape . The Shimano Talora seats are tough and not junk They carry a 600 copper reel no problem and that's heavy.
  8. The price is less but the quality is there well thought out and engineered USA made product. I looked at custom products but they were the price of a small car .
  9. Yes I just bought one and installed it this month . Great unit , good people to deal with . Get the captain pack if you buy it saves a lot of money . Install takes a bit of time to do properly but it looks great and I am very happy with the results.
  10. Some days one works better than the other . I think the braid and wire have different signatures in the water. I wouldn't give up either one just like my lead cores , coppers , riggers they all have their day.
  11. Shimano 7ft Talora lead core copper rod . Tough as heck been running them for several years.
  12. I just sold my last Fenwick spiral stick and was glad to get rid of it . I have run them on and off for years they all fail eventually they stress the blank and blow up like a 12 gauge shotgun on big fish . Had this happen on several rods both composite and glass . The Taloras have been bullet proof for me .
  13. White backed Northport and Southport Nailers , Dr Hooks ,Flutterchucks were mainstays way back when Lake Ontario was nutrient rich and cloudy. You couldn't see your cannon ball down 10feet . When the Silver plated NK's first came out we had trouble trying to make them work . Black and purple , chartruse , dark greens with white backs were go to baits in the then cloudy water . Things sure have changed in the past 35 plus years..
  14. It's all about the antenna all radios run at 25 watts the antenna is what makes it work . you can get by with a entry level radio but buy the biggest best antenna you can afford and match it to the radio for max output signal . Mini antennas won't cut it taller the better.
  15. Me to a hole is a hole I don't care how big it is.
  16. Fish USA .com $79.95 great guys to deal with .I run 8footers $69.95
  17. Bomber long A and J13 shallow long lead on the riggers still does it for me . I think the trick is not to mix it up with spoons etc . All Bombers or J13 . But like Dawg stated the shallow bite doesn't last long anymore.
  18. I think the next few years will see a lot of changes in the electronics market . Things are in a flux right now for me I will stick with my 4212 display and GMS24 sounder for now it won't side scan but it will pick up Kings laying in the mud at 200ft. You got my attention been looking at the Raymarine chirp and side scan stuff it's interesting for sure.
  19. If you just have to have sidescan downview etc look up the new Garmin PANOPTIX system it shows forward a rear viewing with chirp 3 D and the like . Its on the Garmin website . It looks like it is aimed at the small boat market , so it may not apply to big water trolling at this point?
  20. I have run Garmin on two boats for a few years with great success , plotters ,radar ,radios and displays that being said I don't think you can go wrong with Furuno ,Raymarine or Garmin products. I personally don't see the need for side scan etc , 2D is all that is necessary for big water trolling. IMHO
  21. We have run the TR1 for several years and installed a few. The only difference between engine models is the mounting bracket for the steering piston on the lower end and if you opt for idle control some carb hardware may be different. The Tohatsu and Merc are very similar if not the same. My opinion should be doable with some possible minor mods.
  22. The whole X4D thing without surface speed was a farce from the get go . it was either not well thought out or a marketing thing . it is a decent product but not good enough to change my old fish hawk 800 and Sub Troll for me anyways.
