  1. i've fished in smaller. but its best to fish the weather. I fished the western basin of erie for yre in a 18' Cherokee open bow. wasnt many days we couldn't fish. it was more about comfort or storms that kept us in.
  2. I have a pair of the big jon pro tournament that i' bought new a few yrs ago. the problems i've had is the auto stops quit working the 1st yr. I use 13# weights and the breaker on one unit kicks out at times. I contacted big jon and they gave me a name to call but I never did. I just reset the breaker and bring it on in. other than these problems they are awesome. a little fast going down for my liking but not a problem. if I had the money and was getting new it would be either big jon brutes or scotty.
  3. we just bought one of the new Beckman nets at a bait shop in Ludington Michigan on our trip up to Manistee salmon fishing. I cant give you much info off hand but it looks great, has rubberized netting, a large enough hoop for salmon and extendable handle. it was like 149.00 but they had one for more and a cheaper one that was out of stock. Beckman nets are back by the new owner.
  4. i'll take 3-5-6 if still available pm me payment instructions. i'll also need shipping.
  5. another easy way to get the boat up is to start going forward about 10 mph then hit the brakes hard. the boat will slide forward just about every time. another option is to change winches. a 2 speed 3200# fulton will pull it up for you. you can get the new model which looks good or the old standard model which looks like a winch for around 145.00 on ebay.
  6. to bad its not xl or it would be mine.
  7. its all in how the boat loads on the trailer. when the back of the boat is floating it doesn't matter how tight you winch the boat. once the boat is pulled out off the water and the back drops down on the trailer the bow is going to drop back. the only cure I know of is to pull the boat about half way out then winch it up again. you can try not pulling back as far to load boat. both my boats do this if I pull back to far. so I just use my electric winches and winch them on up after I pull them out. I use a large turn buckle for a safety strap. my 21' boat has a 3000# superwinch with 3000# holding brakes. my 17' boat has the same winch. my other 17' boat has a 2500# winch on it. I have no winching problems at all. I got the lt3000# superwinch off ebay for around 200.00. I think the new one I just put on the 21' boat cost closer to 250.00 because it has braided rope instead of cable.
  8. I have almost new pro tournament riggers. I use 13# pancake weights I use with then. 1 e kicks the breaker part of the time. I called big jon about it. they said to call back the next day and talk with this other guy. he said I would probably need to send it in for repairs. you might try just replacing the breakers. if these don't sell please contact me by pm later as I may buy them later.
  9. I would like to have 1.00 a lb for all the salmon i've caught on those green and chrome back in the day. always our go to plug.
  10. I started to switch to the traxstech holders because of the 17 up and down positions for setting them. but I liked the 1 hand operation of the cannons so much better I switched back to the cannon. don't get me wrong the traxstech holders are great being able to adjust from 1 spot below level all the way up makes them one of a kind. but the cannon can be set with 1 hand. just squeeze and lower it down. makes it real nice when I have a rod in my hand. I found the cannon single axis on line for 74.00 each whereas the traxstech is around 135.00 now. the reason for the single axis is you can adjust them left to right as little or as much as you want up to 70 degrees. the double axis is adjusted from one pin hole to the next.
  11. I like the single axis cannon holders the best. i've used the double but like the adjustment from side to side on the single axis.
  12. i've tried buckets before. but they just never slowed me enough. I use bags now and run as slow as I want. just tie them off to the bow before launching and take them back and lay over the side until needed. drop them over the side and tie off the back of the bags. to move locations untie the backs and pull them in over the sides.
  13. first off how do you get the dipsy to trip with mono? braid or wire is needed to trip the diver. I use 17# ande mono for my backing then power pro for my main line.
  14. back in the days before I got boat us I have towed a couple and been towed a couple of times. never had any problems with the towing. but my youngest son almost lost a finger when the line came tight in rough water when we was getting towed. if the guy driving the tow boat goes slow then backs off and makes a hard turn the boat being towed will coast right up to the dock.
  15. sounds like a bad pump. when the electric pump was going bad in my car it worked at times then would just stop working until it got to where it wouldnt work at all.
  16. I have boat us with trailer assist for 99.00 a yr. it would cost half that to get towed for gas. in the last 4 yrs i've been towed once, had my boat and trailer towed off I-75 down in ky. had a service truck come out and change a tire on my truck at no cost to me. in the long run its worth the 99.00 just for the piece of mind.
  17. you could take the plugs out and put a good penetrating oil in the cylinders turn it over a few times by hand to get the oil to the rings then add more oil and let set for a few days. then crank the motor over with the plugs out to get rid of the oil. make sure you have water going to it before cranking. then do a compression check to see if it has stuck rings. if its good start it up and let it idle for a while before using it. I bought a old 115 merc off ebay on an old boat out in a field. it had been there for god only knows how long. the bottom of the motor was all incrusted with white muck where it had set in water for long periods while in the field. the boat had pretty much rotted away on the inside. the tires on the trailer was half flat and badly weather cracked. he gave me the junk boat and trailer so I could haul the motor home before removing it. I stopped at the 1st station and aired up the tires. got it home hooked up the muffs and fired it up. it started right up and ran great. so I put it on another boat then a new water pump in it then took it down to my bil in fl. we used it for a few yrs when I went down fishing. then it started running rough for him and he sold it. he pretty much gave it away when it probably only needed plugs. I never did anything before starting the motor. I would use a can of seafoam in the 1st few tanks of gas. if there is any stuck rings this could help unstick them.
  18. if your 12# to 20# weight doesn't scare the fish off why would adding the probe do it? if you let out the one with the probe it is going to have more blowback than just a weight. the depth finder just read how far from the transducer. if your getting more fish on the non probe rigger let out another 15' on the probe rigger and see if it changes things any.
  19. the setup looks great. I was going to switch to traxstech holders because they have 17 up and down adjustments. but after selling my cannons and buying a traxstech off ebay I decided I liked the one hand operation better on the cannon than the adjustments on the traxstech holders. so I had to buy the cannon back. plus the cannon single axes holders are 74.00 at hodgesmarine.com where the best price I found for traxstech was 131.00. I like the single axis better than the double. the double adjust side to side from one hole to the next whereas the single adjusts as little or as much as I want. plus the single is usually cheaper. I got mine at hodgesmarine.com for 74.00 with free shipping.
  20. i use the lite bite ones on erie and they are priceless.
  21. I contacted grant at ego and sweet talked him into making me up 2 nets at 27X33. but that was a couple of yrs ago without any warranty. but I told him I would retract the handle on large fish. these work great on the 28"+ eyes we get on the central basin of erie. but not so much lately.
  22. I was fishing the white bass run at dale hollow one yr and 2 guys was running gill nets. they had one below us and one above us. every time we caught a couple of fish they jumped in there boat and ran up and down the river then ran the nets. when it started raining they went inside a make do shelter the made out of plastic. the rain muddied the water and the fish stopped biting. the next morning we went in to the dock and talked with the owner. about an hour later the dnr pulled up to the dock with one guy handcuffed in the front with coolers of fish and nets. he called in and said he needed a john doe warrant for the other guy that got away and a search warrant for there cabin. i'll never know how the dnr came to find out about them and what they were doing, LOL.
  23. check the transom good for unsealed screws or old holes. you could have some loose rivets thats also leaking. sometimes you can put your plug in and put water in the boat on the trailer and check the outside for leaks.
  24. the end on the cable may have come loose and when under pressure its sliding on the shift cable wire.
  25. check over on lakeerieunited.com for a new set of brand new 36" amish bags with ropes. that will get toy down to walleye speeds for spring fishing. 140.00 for the pair.
