  1. Dropped lines just before 8 in 30fow and caught a nice brown right out of the gate then not a whole lot for a half hour until we got out a little deeper. Fished 70-90fow. Lots of marks on my graphs. We caught a lot of fish. About half kings and half lakers. Most kings were 6-8 pounds with a few bigger ones. Biggest was about 16#. Most fish came on #2 chinook divers on braid out 100 with a standard spoon. Biggest came on a rigger with a mag spoon. Usually fish a 6 rod spread but could really only keep 3 in the water. We had 4 or 5 doubles and a triple in a couple of hours. Pulled some deep diving stick baits around for awhile and they didnt get bit. How did everyone else do? Lots of boats showed up a bit later in the morning. Was a great first trip out for this guy.
  2. Id vote for one of the better quality push button reels with a higher gear ratio. Most of them are horrendously slow and have terrible drags. You can get bobbers at walmart that the hook reels into which makes casting a lot safer. Love those. We transitioned from barbie rod to cheapo zebco and now to a more serious spincast setup. Would have been better off going straight to the better one right off the bat.
  3. I run stabil marine in every tank simply because the bottle will go bad before I use it all. I run my gas down too just so I can fill up with fresh gas in the spring. really not worried about accumulating water as I have a water separator and have never seen any water in there. When we get a warmish day halfway through winter Ill start both engines and let them get to temp. I no longer take out the 2 main batteries and bring them inside but Ill plug in the charger a few times throughout the winter. TM batteries come inside. This has been working for me.....
  4. I switched to double singles after losing a few fish to line break at the leader and being completely baffled on how a 40# flouro leader could get cut at the back of the boat without getting hung up in anything. I came to the conclusion that the line got caught in the middle of the treble and sheared off. One type of hooks I was using it was pretty easy to cut heavy line that way. Another kind of hook not so much. Are folks using double singles due to the treble cutting the line or because less fish come unbuttoned? Seems like it might help with both...... Is epoxy the solution to line cut or fish being unhooked? Or both? Thanks!
  5. Garmin's website used to say the P66 isnt compatible with the 93sv but it is. Youll need an adapter cable and have to manually set the frequency during setup. The only thing it wont do is automatically detect the P66 but works fine otherwise despite being listed as "incompatible." Works great in deep water. The cone angle is much larger than the Gt54 so it picks up quite a bit more. Was well worth it for me. I have a second graph networked together so I can switch between the P66 and GT54 without having to unplug them which is nice.
  6. I was that guy cleaning fish with a regular knife this season exactly once. Bought an electric one as soon as I got home after watching guys fillet 3 fish to my one. While I can't say I'm the greatest filleter of fish, I like to think Im better than most with a knife. I can certainly make short work of a limit of walleye with my new electric one. =0)
  7. Should be fine if in upstate NY. Where is the location? Best advice i can give is to do a soil test if you havent already.
  8. Went out of the SBH this morning. Lots of boats on the Canada border. Surface temp was 75 and change. I was pulling 4 rods with harnesses about 1.2mph. Caught about 10 walleye and a bunch of sheepshead including a huge one. Couple of eyes were small so were let go. 6 or 7 made it in the cooler. Had to work a bit to get em, so not like a couple of weeks ago but there are still fish around.
  9. What whaler said. Weight/snubber/probe/release/terminal end of rigger wire. You shouldn't need any extra swivels as the snubber and most releases. should already have them at both ends. Worth noting that the snubber is not the same as what some people use after their divers. Need the ones meant for heavy weights. Highly recommend using them especially if your riggers start and stop "hard."
  10. We fished 35-55fow out of the small boat harbor and killed them. Lots of doubles and a triple. Mostly harnesses with a few on worm burners off slide divers. Had a hard time keeping 4 rods in the water. Lots of sheepshead when we fished shallower. Tomorrow should be a great day for a fish fry! Had a blast out there!
  11. Thanks everyone. I love the windfinder app and use it religiously for Lake O conditions. Really takes awhile to build some intuition about conditions and I have zero experience with Erie so appreciate the feedback. Thursday looks interesting as it looks like some thunderstorms will be going through. That said I am planning on getting out there if I can. If I have to bass fish or fish unproductive waters for a few hours its still a win to get out there with my pops and get the lay of the land. That said a few walleye in the cooler would be nice. I will let everyone know how I do out there. Thanks again!
  12. Thanks fellas! The weather is calling for a 10-15mph west wind. Im assuming that is concerning. Is that a red flag or worth chancing it? 19ft aluminum boat here. Any insight on conditions would be helpful. My buddies fish the west side of the lake and have told me stories of very rough going out there. Appreciate it!
  13. I havent taken the boat to Erie yet but I'd like to give it a shot this Thursday. Would plan to launch from the small boat harbor. Is there anything I need to know? Can I fish the harbor if I get blown off the lake? Looks like a west wind. I know Erie is a different animal than Ontario. Thank you!
  14. Lines in at 7 this morning. Started in 60 and headed out to 150 with the best screen around 135. Temp break was down 40 with 39 degree water from 60-150fow.. At one point i had fish on the screen and in my gear consistently with no takers. Was pulling spoons and a couple of attractors. Not many dead alewives but there were some. We ended up fishing for lake trout for the last 45 minutes with bells and landed three all above 10#. Lakers were all very fat. DEC boat was parked by the yacht club doing a survey and they made it seem like there werent very many fish being caught. Nice day to be out on the water.
  15. Ill be out there in the AM. Not possible for me to catch less than the last time I went out although I guess I can do worse. Nothing broke the last time and I didnt sink. I can already hear my fishing buddy (dad) complain that his guide sucks but you get what you pay for. Still beats working!
  16. Not sure if this helps you but we were camping at cedar point last weekend and right in front of the marina in 45-55 FOW there was a ton of bait and some big perch on the bottom. Caught a few nice sized ones drifting worms. There were some bigger fish out there too but no takers. I trolled a bit but didnt really fish very hard and was primarily middle of the day.
  17. 20# for spoons and 25# for flashers for both divers and long lines. 20# for riggers for me. If you or the people you fish with are inexperienced in landing big fish go with 25 or 30#. A few pounds of breaking strength is not likely to make much of a difference in getting bit but will help get fish in the boat when things don't go right.
  18. Set lines in 80fow this morning just before 7am. Sent down my normal spread of 2 riggers, 2 divers and 2 long lines. Went 0/1. First time skunked out there in years. There were some fish on the screen in 100-120fow. Had fish in our gear all morning but no takers. Pulling spoons, F/F and some fake meat rigs. Switched to lakers for a bit bouncing bottom with bells where we got our only hit. Lots of dead alewives. Mouth of the creek was thick with live and half dead ones. Cant wait for some consistent weather....
  19. For what its worth, I switched to 200# braid a few years ago and would recommend 150# to minimize blowback. I have a lot more trust in using braid terminated with a palomar knot and 400# snap swivel compared to any type of wire and wire termination method. So many stories of lost weights and probes. Not happening to this guy.
  20. I have had some good afternoon high sun fishing. I cant get out as much as Id like so Ill take it, especially on a nice day. Most of the time I fish similar techniques as in the morning but run more chrome/UV flashers and may pull a clean meat rig. If you are marking fish and they arent biting, switch up your presentation or location a bit.
  21. Great info here. Totally makes sense. What doesn't make sense is how scary the state guidelines are. Love to see a new study based on prepared fillets with some verbiage that doesn't discourage folks from eating fish from our waters. I would think that a lot of people would interpret "only 1 serving a month" as "these things are full of contaminants."
  22. First trip of the season for me. Set lines at 830 in shallow a few miles west of Webster. Water was green but crystal clear. Most boats were fishing a bit deeper when we started. Couldnt make anything happen in close so we slid out to 30fow. Took a descent brown on a chartreuse and chrome flicker minnow with a chrome lip. An hour later took a nice atlantic on similar stick bait. At about noon I had about a 15# silver fish slam an orange deep diving rapala. Fish ripped out 100 feet of line in no time and jumped several times completely out of the water. Unfortunately my board didnt release and the fish took it under and it ended up coming unbuttoned. I ran 2 spoon rods off boards on 1-4 colors of leadcore and they didnt do anything. Slow fishing but great to be out. Beats the office every time!

  23. Launching out of Irondequoit bay would be a good idea. Good food right there and nice launch in early season, trolling shallow in front of Webster park is usually great this time of year and the bay for plan B if it gets rough. Its also a few miles from the Genny so an easy boat ride if there's not good water color to the East.
  24. While I'm not sure I want to switch over completely to singles on spoons, this would be a great solution if you start running into skippies. They seem to get stuck with all three hooks even on a mag spoon 90% of the time and its a shame not to release them as nicely as possible. I did switch to double singles on flys and I don't think i have had any come unbuttoned. Interested to see what others experience is with singles on spoons....
  25. This is a hard question to answer as the conditions will have a huge impact on how long. If its flat calm and you are trolling at 2mph i got 5+ hours in my setup but if there is wind/current it will change that. ( I use my kicker most of the time) These are 100ah batteries so have the same capacity as "standard" deep cycle lead acid or AGM batteries. Advantage is that they hold "full" voltage until they are almost dead, are about half the weight and last much longer than L/A or AGM batteries.
