I'm new to ice fishing and I'm thinking of getting a shelter.  So once you set up the shelter, what if that spot is not yielding any fish?  Do you take the shelter down or slide it to a new spot multiple times, or just stay put and hope the fish start biting?  Isn't it kind of a pain to move?  Do you drill the hole in the ice and then position the shelter over the hole, or do you drill the hole once in the shelter?  Also, does insulated vs. uninsulated shelters make a big difference?  Thanks for your thoughts.

If no action for 15 minutes or so move. most shelters fold down or collapse on the underlying sled. Most folks move multiple times until you locate fish. Although most folks can be guilty of staying too long in one place because of laziness myself included:lol:. The hole is usually drilled first and then the shelter located over it or them. Insulated shelters off a little more warmth. It helps to shop in a place with multiple shelters to make your selection for many reasons and be sure to get one that fits you is comfortable seating, and that is easy to erect and put down. runners can often be handy to install on the bottom for easier sliding in many conditions. Seating comfort is important though when sitting for  long hours in the cold. A heater is also a nice addition.

Everything Sk8man said, plus the biggest decision is between a flipover or a hub. I had a small eskimo hub and it was really tough for me to get in and out of. Sold it and found a one man flipover. Worked way better for me. The plan was to be able to move more easily from spot to spot. I get lazy and a usually stay too long over NO fish however. I'd take a walk out to a popular spot and ask guys what the like and don't like about their setups. Way better information that most dealers can give and you can see first hand. . Lastly, with all of the snow this winter, a smitty sled is essential if you are pulling anything by had.
