I believe 4.1 is 4.1 turns of the handle/spool to put 1' of line on the reel and 5.1 is 5.1 turns of the handle/spool to gain 1' of line on the reel. I may be wrong but thats what I always thought it meant.

Tom, you've got it right. The stats on your specific reel will tell you how many inches of line you're actually retrieving based on the line size, spool diameter and gear ratio. All things being equal, the higher gear ratio gives you faster line retrieval.

For each complete turn of the reel handle,the bail or spool revolves 5.1 or 4.2 times. The lower the gear ratio , the more powerfull but less line retrived. Kind of like low gear in your vehicle or pitch of your prop. High gear ratio retrives line faster w/ no weight , but with a load , or fish, it is harder to turn the handel & puts extra wear & tear on the reels gears & your arms.
