Where are the fish??

My take is the reversing effect on currents with the resulting changes to water temp and oxygen levels. The fish don’t leave the lake (obviously) but pelagics can get pushed clear out into the next county. I used to stay home during East winds out of frustration. Now I have a few spots I go to to fish in an East wind. Keep in mind the large outflows are carrying oxygenated, warmer water that can have a stabilizing effect so sometimes it is best to find where the river water is hanging out.

The currents are at a different level of power compared to the fingers. Yes, you can look at downrigger cable angle or dipsy rod bend or the thump of a dodger with a drop weight but each spoon has a sweet spot where a triggering action happens. It might be the difference of .25 mph. You are not going to be able to accurately measure a .25 mph difference by looking at your dipsy angle. One of the reasons flasher flies had grown in popularity over two decades is that speed becomes less critical compared to a spoon presentation.

I vaguely remember catching Atlantic Salmon
-
Nice Atlantic! I would have shoved the stomach contents from the Atlantic into that King’s maw and let it grow to respectability. He clearly hadn’t followed his king brothers to the bottom of the lake because the basin bottom is crawling with smelt and alewives. I graphed the water between 390-450’ off Olcott on Saturday looking for suspended fish but everything is plastered to the bottom.

I am sure nothing ruined. I watched the temp gauge going up and we would anchor and let it cool before starting up again. Synthetic oil and cold spring temps helped. I would say I burnt off 1/2 qt of oil. We limped in anchoring twice while enjoying a beer, good food and sunshine. Nice day to be out and happy to see rich green water off port instead of the usual March grey water. Everything will speed up this week. Get your boats ready boys AND CHANGE those impellers!! Lol -

Great insight would be knowing when your impeller is about to go. IMG_4008.MOV -

I will be out both days. -
At 12 mph you are probably 2-4’ with occasional 5’. At 13 mph N wind you are 3-5’ with occasional 6’

Overnight with falling temps, the shoreline can be colder than water in 20’. If the sun comes out, the shallows can warm late morning. Olcott flow will be warmer. Rain will make the shoreline warm. I probably will start with lakers first thing then slide in for browns later in the day. We have not had appreciable rain this year at all. Gobies live in that 12’-30’ band most of the time. Absence of a bait run up the creeks post rain, browns will be keying on gobies -

I would say bring your lake trout gear. Until that shoreline collar of water gets warmer than the rest of the lake, browns can be more spread out into deeper water. Lakers are pretty active this time of year. Troll slow. I try to hit 1.75-1.8 mph downspeed. That means you need to pick baits that work at that speed. -

Always changing. Ontario, she is a fickle woman. Now Saturday looks nice... -
