    The only way to go on this one is buying the original OMC one or if unavailable a sierra one. Anything else, specially on a such a crucial thing as turning the oil pump is asking for very expensive trouble.

    Let's hope you are wrong. In the meantime, water temperature off Oswego is 56 and the buoy north of Rochester is clocking in above 50 degrees

    It is starting to happen. The water temperature at the buoy off Oswego is reading over 53 degrees. From here on it is all up a bit every day.

    The next few days the wind will be out of the western quadrants. It will be blowing steady and at a good clip That would mean that given the warmer weather and sunshine, the surface water will get warmer and this warmer water will be pushed into the shore. It will push the cold water away back to where it belongs, deep down on the bottom of the lake or there abouts. Maybe finally there will be warmer water on the south shore and with it, fish May the Lady of the Lake bring abundance in our coolers.

    That tank looks like it has reached the end of its natural life. If the plastic window thingy is unreadable because of dirt and probably age, it is only a matter of (short) time that it will start cracking or sweating or leaking. Buying a new one for $20 is probably a smart thing to do.

    The simple and cheapest solution is making sure that you always top of your tank before boating. another solution is contacting the tank maker and ask him about it. You see without you mentioning what material, brand, built in or carry in your tank is, it is really hard to give advice.

    This season though , these 30 +inch Atlantics are a very welcome catch.Even in this cold water, their acrobatics lighten up my day. I must admit though that they do not taste very different from the ones at Wegmans.

    Finally had a chance to take my own boat out. The original plan was Sandy , but after reading the dismal reports I decided that I might just as well stay close to home. Going out , there were a few marks in the 50 to 60 foot area but no dice. The water at 20 feet down was 44 degrees , even the lakers sensed it was too cold. Between 70 and a hundred and twenty there was a debris field the like of which I have not seen before ,it was acre upon acre of whatever the Genesee had stocked up all winter just to make fishermen miserable. There were tons of gulls sitting on floating wood piles. They were probably not capable of flying after gorging on all these dead alewives. The one interesting thing that I had not seen before is that the dead alewives are of different year classes where before they all were the same size. We were skunked . Not even one bite.

    All across the water. We try wherever our finders show fish and the temperature is above 39 degrees. We do not usually target laketrout. although they too are found high up in the column whenever there is a bait pod.

    Is it just me or is everybody catching these unusual amounts of Coho salmon? In a week out of Olcott we only got one king, not a very big one at that, but cohos and atlantics are all over the place. What is different this year? Did somebody accidently stock cohos instead of kings , or did a coho stocking have an absolutely terrific survival rate? And never mind the amount of atlantics. We never got that many in one week. What''s going on?

    I think that the DEC does proper testing and when they come up with the results, they are correct. Next, they compare these results to national standards and draw their conclusions which are published. I am not sure that commercial companies with a financial interest are as conscientious as the DEC. The fish farming lobby is interested in selling their product. The DEC has no such interest

    You might consider me one of the people who always tries to save a penny or two by improvising things and hoping it will work. Usually after many trials and mostly errors I come to the conclusion that I am not as smart as many engineers and the price of my "improvements" and jerry rigging is often higher and less efficient. In the end it usually is cheaper to buy something that works well and does not need repairs or improvements. Besides, usually parts individually bought are much more expensive than the ready package.

    It is based on the old Seth Green meat rigs, but with a twist. Today we have the fish finders ,but also the mussels. So we can use the fish finder to locate fish , but we cannot just drag the weight throught all the mussels and often poison carrying sediment. It's best to leave that undisturbed. Granted that it mostly works on bottom location, the idea here is more fine tuned without dragging but being dragged by a current or wind. For any jigging halfway down to the bottom , this idea is useless and a good way to get to see your friendly local physical therapist .

    I'm curious as well, I troll for eight hours at a time and the kicker provides plenty of power, so it does not drain the battery at all.

    Yes it may be a different kind of jigging , but jigging none the less. Not really. There is a fairly long rubber band,sort of like a very weak snubber between the weight and the jigs. the weight drags over the bottom and the jigging just stretches and contracts the rubber band

    I vote for Sutton jigging spoons. I run them with a one pound weight on the bottom and three spoons off triangular swivels with each spoon about 2 feet away from the swivel. It needs to be lowered very slowly in order to prevent F-ups, but once down, they outfish gambler rigs for lakers. I wish somebody would start making those sutton spoons again. They are getting harder and harder to find.

    Its crazy different. We spent one week out of Olcott and fished between the Somerset power plant ( the stack is down) and the bar. Everything we caught was between 10 and 30 feet down over 40 to 80 foot depth. We caught 3 nice Atlantics , a ton of Coho but only one King.

    Apart from this thread being 12 years old, I have a problem with tipping period. Please give me the price for the trip that includes a living wage for the mate. Tips are mostly a way for the company to not have to pay a living wage to its workers. Besides, tips go mostly undeclared. which means no taxes paid, but more importantly no social security taxes paid , which comes around to bite the mate in the rear as he reaches the age where he is eligible for social security.

    The only thing that could make noise is the cork screw ram at the kicker end and it will only get noisy if it is working under a tight angle or when it is really badly greased. When you try it out of the water though it will keep on trying to steer the boat and that might make a noise.

    I just installed the exact same setup last fall so I would be able to do solo fishing. These setups are great! The price offered here is crazy low . A brand spanking new setup that with taxes costs $3200 new and now $1800. This is the best kicker remote control on the market, You hold the remote control in your hand and point your hand in the direction you want to go and push a button.The thing is like magic. Anybody with an EZsteer who is not happy with it , this is your chance to go 2 levels up for cheap!

    There is research out there testing a target group of people. The group eats great lakes fish all the time and it seems that those folks are doing just fine. On the other hand , a lot of opinions on this site may be guided by professional interest. What do expect a charter boat captain to say?

    We (four old farts) will be fishing out of Olcott next week for the whole week and I am curious to know whether the salmon has moved south from Canada in the American side yet, Or if we should just concentrate on browns and coho. If you have any news , please let us know
