  1. Very nice. I got a couple friends that keep boats just for Quabbin. Haven't made it out there for a couple years now. Been heading up to the Big Lake pretty much every weekend. We'll see how that goes this year as the gas prices are supposed to get real high. As for gas prices. Doesn't Ma. have a system where you don't have to pay fuel taxes,or at least get them back, as long as you don't use that fuel for traveling on the roads? Whenever I go back to Hubbardston I swing by the Wachussetts reservoir and do some fishing near the bridge on Sterling street just south of Clinton.
  2. Did you by any chance read about "pickerel" in some Canadian cook book? Usually when Canadians say pickerel, they mean what we call walleye
  3. My mother-God bless her soul- used to prepare a dish for her Polish grandmother. It was a ground carp patty. The way she got rid of the small bones was quite simple. She would leave the fish overnight in vinegar. The acid in the vinegar would dissolve all the small bones. Then she would boil the fish ,grind it up and add some sugar to get rid of the sour taste. There were absolutely no bones in her patties. It was my mom's version of "gefillte fish" and tradition forced me to partake of it. You had to be Polish to enjoy it.....
  4. Hello Glen. I spent a few weekends at the Taughannock Farm Inn. It is within easy walking distance of the launch. It is a beautiful and very friendly place which your wife will also love to stay at. I spent my 30th wedding anniversary at the Inn. Too bad they are closed for the season.they will open on April 8th http://www.t-farms.com/ good luck fishing.
  5. Has any of you good people ever bought any of their fishing line? I use their stuff a lot when I fish for ground fish out of Gloucester, but I never knew that they also sell downrigger wire. They offer 600 feet of #150 test 7 strand line for 33 dollars and change.(with shipping $40). I am just curious to know your opinion about their products.
  6. I am all for the 3 rod rule, but I have to take exception to the idea that just because the bag limit is not changed, there is no difference in the amount of fish being taken. We may innocently start a chain reaction 3 rods means more people actually catching the bag limit. That by itself is a HUGE increase in fish being caught. This does not mean that the stocks are going to be destroyed, but it will make a difference. There may well be an increase in lamprey attacked fish because the lamprey population has fewer fish left to feed of. As for Tom's argument about it being good for the economy. Everything comes at a price. We do not yet know that price. I would love to see some cause/effect study results by the DEC or a similar agency and take it from there.
  7. Dependent on the way the current out of Milliken goes, there is great shore fishing just south of the station towards the piece of land jutting out, almost exactly opposite the road coming down.I go there often either from the shore or wading and 3 foot pike are not the exception ,but the rule.
  8. How much backing should I use if I fill the reel with 1000 feet of 30# test? Thank you.
  9. Usually some bug likes to crawl into the horn and their nesting material muffles the sound and/or settles on the vibrating parts that create the sound, leaving the horn soundless. taking the horn parts apart and cleaning them has always solved the problem for me.
  10. This is probably the latest on the 3 rod legislature. http://open.nysenate.gov/legislation/bill/S6453
  11. I tried the Henrietta store. Apart from some plastic worms there is nothing on sale.
  12. A transom saver is to protect the transom and the outboard.there is no need for it on an I/O
  13. Whatever length of shaft you intend to use, make sure that the remote cables coming from the engine run freely onto the boat without weird turns and bends.Don't ask me how I know.
  14. http://www.cabelas.com/divers-fish-seek ... erralID=NA Here it is.
  15. The pond to be on is the northern one.The Southern one -Devils bathtub- is not properly frozen over. The good places for pike are on the west side just south of the center shelter where the shore curves back westward. There are lots of pike but none of them are very large.
  16. Your point is well taken and the question has been asked by many.About 3 yeas ago In-fisherman magazine decided to run a series of tests using bass to see if there is any truth to the red hook and line reputation. The test results showed that red hooks did not produce better or worse catch rates in most given situations. The red color was the first in the spectrum to change to black as it was lowered in clear water. In cored water it did disappear(blend in with its environment) at shallower depths than other colors. Here is a more recent article . http://www.in-fisherman.com/2011GearGuideBonus
  17. Red does kind of "disappear",it does not magically become invisible,it turns black.
  18. The Fishhawk triducer uses a 70KHZ frequency. I have the fishhawk triducer about 2 feet away from my humminbird triducer which uses 50, 83 and 200, and never have any interference. If you have not yet done so,you should change your regular spark plugs with plugs that have a resistor inside. That usually puts an end to all electronic interference
  19. Personally I much prefer to see redheads on the lake in summer.
  20. That is a great fish. When did you catch it?
  21. Trying to compare apples to oranges is tricky. If space is your problem, then you can always use the same rod and change the reels out. That way, although not perfect, you can have your cake and eat it too. The good part of copper compared to leadcore is the amount of line that you can spool onto your reel. This allows you to go deeper and it will alow the salmon to make a longer run without getting spooled. What I like about leadcore is the color code system and the way it runs from the side riggers. No matter what you choose, you will always miss the one that you did not bring.
  22. Sounds great,I did not know that America has that many weekend warriors. I wonder how many there would be if deer would shoot back.....
