The boat itself would have some salt damage , like pitted chrome and corroded wiring. The structure would not have suffered . However I would check the boat for fork lift damage. The lower ends being rebuilt tell me that they were in the brine for longer periods of time. Eve3n when the engines are flushed on the inside, the outside is often not properly washed and being in a rack very close to salt water means that the boat is still exposed to the salty humid seabreezes

If that is done and the engines are properly flushed with fresh water every time the salt damage is much less. I would check the boat for fork lift damage

700 hundred hours of engine time in salt water means that salt cooling water has run through the engines for 700 hours. This would not be a big deal if the boat was pulled out of the water after every trip. In this case I doubt very much that this was done. Mostly because the boat does not have a trailer. That probably means that the boat was kept in a slip in salt water for months at a time. Electrolysis between salt, stainless steel bolts and aluminum tends to weld the stainless bolts to the aluminum of the engines and it also promotes corrosion. In this case, with the AC hookup it was probably worse. Bolts that are welded in that way break. Servicing those engines will be quite the challenge. That it my 2 cents.

Maybe it can be suggested that there is a limit per permit, like maybe 10 or 8 per season. That way the trip is still worthwhile, but the numbers taken down will be less overall.

There is a current thread discussing transom replacement. The guy who started it is replacing the transom on his 22 foot outboard Islander , because he wants to put it up for sale.

Let us just hope that we never have to find out if they work when needed. I would much rather buy new ones every three years and replace them when their time comes. But I have seen them used once. The flare gun ones. It was pouring rain and the in the waves the hand held ones would have been invisible. That little episode ended in me towing in a 22 footer rag boat with a broken line that made it impossible to keep the sail up and a seriously upset and seasick wife on board. I believe that the guy could have handled the boat, as for the wife, I did prefer not to inquire.

It is not so true that outdated flares work. After 5 years they often have to be ignited by open flame and even then I have had some of them fizzle out. I now have a policy of using them for fireworks while they still work. As for the electric SOS beacon, you cannot shoot it very high into the sky, on the other hand it will work a lot longer than flares do.

I had to replace my flares again. The three year expiration date is up. I decided to to some price comparison checking Cabela , West Marine , Bass pro, and Walmart. At walmart the set of handheld Orion flares is $24,98 , the other stores charge between $34 and $38. The flares you can shoot from a flare pistol are $19.93 at Walmart and at least $10 dollars more in the other stores. So the 2 packages totalled $45 at Wallmart. In one of the above mentioned stores these 2 products sold for $80. I do not like shopping in Walmart, but I hate getting ripped of at stores that have the word sport or boat in their name.

It is hard to say what you should do without seeing how you do it now, But make sure that your hooks are very sharp. keep constant pressure on the fish and keep your rod up high. Do not "pump" the rod because that is where you loose constant pressure.

Praying Mantis Charters in the Little Salmon River has a twin engine Steiger. He has won several tournaments using it. He zooms across the lake at 60 miles an hour. So if the fish don't bite here he'll pick up his gear and tries his luck thirty miles away in half an hour.

I am not sure if marine plywood is the right material. I used it when I did my Islander, but in retrospect I would use a different plywood today.The marine plywood is not only very expensive , but it is also quite soft. It is very dense, which is important. I used Okuma. Marine plywood will rot just as fast as other plywood and you will have to treat it with a few layers of epoxy. A good thing to have is another 2 boards which you need to put the glued together plywood in between and a bunch of concrete blocks to lay on top as weights during the setting process of the glue. I found that putting some eye bolts in the old transom and using a chain and a cherrypicker will make removal of the old transom a lot easier. It is heavy.

Maybe the culprit is an old man with blood pressure medication? But seriously, when salt is spread on the winter roads, the deer will use that instead of their regular salt licks and dependent on the chemical make up of the salt in your area, blue deer pee can happen -
Keep it. It should not be a problem to work over and at the same time it allows you to make changes without making holes in the hull. If you feel that this setup is too high,(from the pictures it does seem high) you can lower it a few inches to where it is more comfortable. Don't throw the baby out with the bath water. -
What bugs me with these numbers is that with a southern wind upwelling the warmer deep water will come up (the opposite of summer temperature wise). Unless you can somehow get graphs of wind speed and direction and cross reference them with your temperature graph, this only gives a very localized picture. Only at the depth of the intake crib. When the lake freezes over the water will stratify but with a mostly open lake and stormy weather like last winter the temperatures are probably all over the place.
