Pap Sounds like a mechanical assist system. Not a true hydraulic setup. Same system that I have in my boat. I have the Garmin GHP 12 with the Octopus Drive. Whenever I start my boat the electronics are shut off. My Lowrance does not shut down but it flashes a little if I start the boat while it is on. I'm sure it's not good for the unit. King went out of business over 10 years ago. There was a guy in Florida that bought all of their inventory(parts). Just do an internet search. I would think about upgrading to a newer unit. I installed my own Garmin GHP12. It took around 4 hrs to install it. Also, I had Hank do a lot of mechanical work on my boat this past year. He has it running great!!! I have a garmin ghp 12. With the octopus drive on my twin 5.7l mercruisers. I installed it last year and it works great. I shut down one motor when trolling. I use the motor with power steering when in waves and the non power steering motor when it is flat. I wouldn't hesitate to go with the garmin. It is a great unit. I know the feeling. 2 yrs ago we got a dq after having a commanding lead in the proam. The second day the observer forgot to record our gps coordinates. He only recorded the way points. At the weigh in line our error was recognized by the tournament officials. As the captain I should have reviewed the paperwork, and I didn't. Lesson learned.
