  1. What happens if someone does not have a PFD on? Does the person who does not have it on get a fine or does the boat owner get the fine?
  2. I run 12# on my Sub-Troll with the standard wire. Works fine.
  3. OK I give up. I can't find the troutman87 post. When and where is it? Link? Thanks
  4. The Niagara is best when the ice boom is out of lake Erie and the water temperature is 39 deg. Check the lake temperature out of Buffalo. At Art Park as well as most places the smelt will run close to shore well after dark. Maybe midnight or later. And at times you will have to deal with some floating ice in the river. Be careful, the drop off is fast and the water is cold.
  5. For more info on this check out the links. http://www.capwiz.com/keepamericafishin ... d=14653146 http://wnyoutdoors.blogspot.com/
  6. Just received information that the ramps are open. Got a plow driver to clear the snow. Check this video of the south ramp from yesterday. Not much snow to clear. http://wnyoutdoors.blogspot.com/ Remember the water is still low. Be careful.
  7. Only the boat ramps at the Fort are closed. You can still drive into the fort. Wilson is open. The ice is soft and some water on top. But you can drive there also. Check the video of Wilson Harbor today.
  8. The ramp at the Fort is blocked. Water is low. But I don't know why it's blocked. Check the video: http://wnyoutdoors.blogspot.com/ This is what the Youngstown ramp looks like now. I took these videos today. Unless there is another ramp in Youngstown that I don't know of.
  9. I have not heard of the Fort being closed by the state. The last time I was down there the water was very low. Just a heads up. I may check it out Tuesday.
  10. From my experience, when the glow is too strong I don't catch as many fish. But when the glow is down I catch more fish. This is in the day time. Not sure how that works at night. Any thoughts?
  11. Time to contact your state representative. Remind them that we pay taxes. Too much taxes. Forget the Governor, he's clueless. This time next year we will have an other Governor. And he will be from down state. All the state leaders are from down state. No concern for up state. http://www.state.ny.us/
  12. I bet it will happen. Since when does this state not have a fee or tax on something.
  13. What boat launch is open this time of year? Thanks.
  14. Army. Nam 68-69 ,Tet Thanks to all who served and still serve.
  15. Do any of you guys fish at the power plant. And do you fish from a boat at the power plant? I was there a few years ago on business and saw some people fishing there. Just wanted to know what , when and how they were doing. And what boat launch to use. Thinking of going at the end of March, depending on the weather. Thanks, Kliph
  16. High enough so the line doesn't drag in the water. I think mine were about 6 ft off the water. The mast is about five feet tall on the casting platform in the bow of the boat, maybe 6 ft total.
  17. Copper with Dipsy's. But I did say I don't run wire anymore. But I may get back into it. Just what I need are more rod and reels. My Dipsy's now are on PP #30.
  18. First off, I don't run copper. But I am thinking of it. I did run stainless for a while. Too stiff. Many guys run copper with Dipsy's. The reason is because you can get deeper with less line out. Also many think the hum of the copper line attracts fish. Also some will run a roller tip top or Twillie Tip. I run a Twillie Tip on my full core rod. That way I can run the core on the tip without breaking the lead, I hope.
  19. As far as distance out goes...it should be the same as a 600' copper rig. Right? Yes, if you're running 600 ft of copper behind the boat. Most of the time copper is run with Dipsy's. So the whole 600 ft is not out. With core it is best to run all the core out. That way the core is not on your top rod guide. The reason for that is because with the core on the top guide you break the lead inside the sheath. And that weakens it. That is why the top rod guide should be on the backing. I run 30# Power Pro for backing and 27# core. I don't run copper. But I have been running core for 20+ years. I first ran core with Dipsy's, that was before Power pro. I do, at times run one core down the chute. Now I run it off Down riggers. Two colors. My #1 set up. Don't tell anyone. It's a secret.
  20. WOW, That is 600 feet of core + leader and backing. You are pushing seven hundred feet of line behind the boat. Sounds interesting. What kind of reel are you going to use. I would hope it is a high speed reel.
  21. Since no one responded, I'll try. I'm at the other end of the lake, Niagara river. The Niagara Bar seems to hold fish all year. But there should be some trout outside the tributaries where you are. If that were me I would try long lining stick baits off boards. Good luck, Kliph
  22. "just want something light and small for quickie fishing in ponds." That's what I was thinking. I have the boat for the lake/river. I wanted something to start out with. I have a canoe, but it's too big for one person to load and unload. But I could always upgrade to a bigger yak. I was looking for a used one for a starter. Thanks, Kliph
  23. That looks like fun. I see everyone has a "sit on top" yak. I have been thinking of getting myself one. I can't decide if I want a sot or a sit in side. Or what size or make. Any ideas? Thanks, Kliph
  24. I also was on the bar, 5pm until sunset. Three shakers. All in about 100 fow. All on spoons.
