  1. Well I was going to stay home today but then got up at 5AM and decided to give it a try before all h breaks loose on the lake with jet skiers, etc. and left the launch at 6:30 AM and to my amazement there were several water skiers and jet skiers out then at north end....as well as some folks parked near Kershaw...probably getting a good spot for the fire works tonight. That should have been omen enough but I never give up.... I started out at the pump station on a diagonal toward Thendara with two downriggers with sliders and a 6 color leadcore. Spoons on downriggers Rapala on leadcore. I changed out the lures after a bit and then I ran into the biggest debris field I've ever encountered near the east side in 100-125 ft of water (for miles). logs, sticks on top and underneath, grass, leaves dead fish...you name it! It extended all the way south to south across from Danny's place. Fleas are now getting bad the deeper I went with the downriggers on lines and some on cable as well. Stopped using the leadcore went to 30 lb wire rig...fleas still caught on terminus and lure and above dipsey. Very bad from about 50 ft down. Many people out water skiing and boats going full tilt not even noticing all the debris.. Just hope some water skier doesn't end up impaled by those limbs. Never had a hit on anything....only marked a few fish suspended and a couple lakers on bottom in 103 ft. and very little bait. I decided to bag it at 11:30 AM. First time skunked two times in a row in more years than I can remember (if ever) When I arrived at the launch ramp kids from the Finger Lakes Institute were there checking boats for invasive species and asking folks to fill out 4 page survey (which I did despite the onset of storm clouds and folks waiting in long line to launch). One of them said he had been to a meeting a couple days ago with DEC and they are quite sure the dead fish in the lake aren't the result of the virus but indicated that something serious is going on with the lake and they are not sure what just yet.... 74.5 degrees on surface.
  2. Go get em Nick and Theresa. We'll be rooting for you. (with a cold one in my hand)....I figured that with the T storm warnings for next few days and my stainless steel bow rail I'll wait it out Looked like warmer surface temps to the west of Sodus on the map earlier today and right out from the Point 40's and 50's so those lines may be coming up a bit from last time out Nick and if it is a south wind they may be out and all over the place.....hope you get a break from the flea action with the messed up water. and temps...Good luck! Les
  3. Yeah Kev for some reason the dead ones in shallow on copper don't seem to fight as well as the ones 75 ft. down that are spinning around on the way up and in on the Seth Green rig....have to leave it to the experts to sort that one out I guess
  4. UV both sides?
  5. Yeah....Walt wanted me to buy his business a couple times but I knew that I wouldn't be able to actually fish and I'd be chained to the business so I tactfully declined
  6. The really interesting thing is that both catfish and bullheads are considered "bottom feeders".....yet caught trolling up in the water column....
  7. Nice fish! Lake O sure has some fine specimens in it....
  8. Good going Mike. Nothing like getting them on the old stuff ....I just resurrected a bunch of them (Twin Minnows) from one of my old tackle boxes this afternoon...I remembered that I had bought a bunch from Walt Burgeson at Fisherman's Friend years ago and had put them away someplace. Going to give em a try next time out no matter where I end up fishing...The black ones used to be deadly on the lakers on copper...I always replace the treble with a hardened SS single. Best regards, Les
  9. Brings back memories....I had a pair of brand new Riviera's with the 4ft. booms back in 1975 and folks on Seneca Lake asked me if I was doing research with the Navy barge....as the downriggers were one of the first on the Finger Lakes (and folks hadn't seen them before) and I remember some irate lady at the State Park saying to me that it was shameful that I was taking such advantage of the poor fish with my depth finder and downriggers
  10. Rick' s probably going to write off the engagement ring as a "business expense" too and use the newspaper article to back up his claim
  11. Kinda of a downer timing wise Marty but at least you know what the problem is now and it's going to be on its way getting fixed. Good luck with it. Les
  12. Very nice...thanks for sharing . Will give it a try.
  13. Have to be careful from now on Rick all the chicks know you have the big bucks now with all the prize money etc.
  14. It also makes you wonder if the dead fish situation is also related to fish not perhaps actively feeding if its a general (and extensive) condition relating to the water.
  15. Also of interest in estimating the weight of the big ones even in the boat is that two fish may be the same or similar length but the difference in weight is noticed by the thickness across the back and to a degree the arch of the stomach area.
  16. Nice fish and nice report....very encouraging !
  17. This is getting good....kinda like a reality show.... and despite the commentary...the Kings are still out there laughing at us....this is why I love this site so much....a whole lot of passion as well as b... busting....
  18. I second Rolmops suggestion of the long shaft motor as long as you can position it in an up out of the water position while going at speed. My 9.9 is a long shaft and is nearly at the same vertical position as the 135 when down and I seldom need to use my EZ Steer bracket I just steer with the big motor and because the props are pretty much aligned it steers as if it was the big motor. The only difference is during extreme wind/wave conditions (and usually just cranking up the speed a bit solves that). If it were me I'd go with at least an 8 horse 4 stroke if possible. Most of the time you just think about trolling issues but in times of crisis (like your big motor dying just as the lightning/storm is starting up) out deep in the lake with nobody else around) you'll be wishing you had a 25 horse kicker I've been there in the past and it's not a warm fuzzy feeling.
  19. Cool Kev! I still remember my first fish caught with my dad at 4 years old near the yacht club on Seneca a 12 inch Smallmouth Black Bass (only had to be10 inches back then).Even after all these years and thousands of fish later I still feel that it was my favorite fish. She's a cutie!
  20. I think Don is right. Another thing to consider is when you are underway and perhaps are standing up trying to look out for debris fields etc. where would that set up be in your field of view. If you do go that route make sure you never leave your lures hooked up on your rods because Rapalas are especially hard on the eyes.
  21. Once on Seneca near Kashong Point while using Seth Green rigs I caught a huge bullhead on the third leader down (about 75 ft.) over 300 plus feet of water. I've also seen mass migrations of huge carp in the middle of the lake going east to west just under the surface....a lot of stuff goes on out there that is poorly understood
  22. My hunch is that there isn't enough money in it for the time involved and the cost of stocking so many parts for different models and reels would be too great for a small time business if it were dependent on that.
  23. I wonder if the Zebra Mussels have anything to do with it ? I don't remember die offs of multi species being of anywhere near this magnitude in the past before the introduction....or depletion of localized oxygen because of them....just thinking out loud....
  24. Still one of my favorite lures...a couple years ago I bought out over a hundred of them at one crack. They often will work when other lures fail to do anything...like everything else learning the specific speed range for your boat is key to success with them.
