  2. Heck, I remember captains starting a/the professional captains union -- we called them PUCs -- because he didn't like part time captains. They used thuggery and turned me into the CG for having an undocumented vessel & other "saftey" concerns, I welcomed the CG aboard and they gave me a sticker for my windshield and thanked me for minding my own business and running a safe operation! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Mower, Brother, If you ever need a tow give me a call chances are I'll be out there. Got a fast seaworthy boat and can be there quick in an emergency -- if its not an emergency you may have to float around till 1:30. As a professional you know what I'm saying!!! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- I'm waiting for Ray to chime in so I can use my plumbing analogy.
  3. Sorry if I offended anyone, I guess I should have said: Pay your money -- Take the course -- get your license ............... and you can get discount coupons!!! The experience is where I diverge from others. I spent 2 summers (75-100 charters a summer) as first mate with experienced captains (2nd and 3rd issue at the time) to get my sea service, that was in addition to having my own boat prior to that and fishing 4 days a week from April to October since 1980. I put my time in, much like an apprentice, and learned the trade, I reviewed the rules of the road and walked in to the USCG office in Toledo and passed the test my first time based on my knowledge from experience. That was a long time ago . Rusty, how would you like it if some guy walked into your place of employment and wanted your job just because he studied for a couple of weekends and passed some test after you put in 7 years of work? ...............Just because the rules changed and traveling schools teach to and give the test to pass out your same credential for a check, a wink at your "experience" and 30 hours of book "instruction". Perhaps my point will be missed Please learn the business, then take the test
  4. Congrats Team Crazy B! I would not say it is an upset -- You take one of the best captains on the lake and give him a team of experienced fisherladies and you should expect a winning team. From my experience charter fishing over the last 23 years it is the ladies that have the highest landing percentage. They are cool, consistent and very focused when fighting a fish. Guys are just the opposite, the shot of adrenaline makes them do stupid things with the rod -- sort of like buck fever! Of course tying on a good fly helps too!!
  5. It used to be that you had to know something............... Now it is just like a college education all you need is a warm body and enough money to pay for the course.
  6. You can also run dipsys off your copper, off your downriggers, on mono, on wire, power pro ect. You can run them on any type of line that you wish.....................but hard to think of any advantage other than small diameter and sinkability of wire.
  7. #1 -- SPOON -- MOONSHINE Carbon 14 MAG #2 -- Yellow Echip/MOONSHINE GP Fly #3 -- Glow Ghost J plug #4 If you can get one you may want to try a MOONSHINE FLOUNDER POUNDER PLUG
  8. Raspberry blow pops? iodine poision? Windshield washer fluid poisioning? TOO COOL!!!
  9. Everyone is talking about retribution. I have got to think that one way we could "punish" these guys is to hit them in their pocket book. I'm thinking...................book a fishing trip with them, send them a small deposit (or none if you can play them for a sucker) then don't show up. If 50 - 100 guys did this it would put a hurting on their business end. OR............... we could take up a collection and post a billboard in Altmar "reporting" the disposition of this case or even that they faced the charges. Could even raise a bit of money by having 1 day derbies with 50% payout 50% to the cause -- (I love these types of contests because they are for a good cause and not just greed)
  10. Ray, THANK YOU FOR putting your PANTS ON for the picture!! You the man!!!
  11. YOU cant catch fish if they are not there. The fish have been 8-32 miles out the past 2-3 days. I bet your dipsy would work out there.
  12. WOW......you are the first boat that I have heard of that boated that many mature kings this year. What an unbeliveable day you had!!! You must have had their number!!
  13. There were many boats out in the 500' foot area Saturday. Today they came from the north west towards me I could see them coming for 4 miles and there was not another boat between us. I just hold up the number of fingers for the # of rods I have out, that is all they are looking for. Don't complain about them riding by, they could just as well have made you pull up your lines and show your license. Ray, I just put a hat on my Afgan Hound and they always mistake her for my GF.
  14. How's that, you only joined in June of this year ???? Re-joined -- used to be a contributor -- now just a user
  15. Over 2 years ago I posted on this site that this would happen. What do you think? Cut police, fire, teachers, government, highways, prisons, Thruway? No the fishing will go first. It is not time to sell the boat yet, but I would not advise borrowing money to buy one!! We can scream, yell, compain and moan all we want, but at the end of the day there will still be no money and the death of this fishery will come. Don't get the idea that I am happy about it................I am as pissed as any of you. It is just reality. This is what happens to a good program (stocking salmon & trout) because when GOV. wanted to have the Hatchery guys cut to a 4 day week (they and many other state employees) they said no way. When teachers were asked to have 25 kids in their classroom instead of 15 they said no way. When cops were asked to have single riders they said no way. When the unemployed were asked to get a job they said no way. When we said let our license money pay for our sport they said Yell Hes, then the dastarbs stole the money and screwed us over. Sorry I was not able to self censor as much as I should have .... Hank you may have to step in!! Skipper, I agree with your premise, but there is no one stepping up on either side that has the balls to do what it takes in NY or in the country for that matter. For the first time in my life I am envious of New Jersey!!
  16. What the rec louers should do is (if it is legal) have a common call signal for ch16 to which any lou'er in the area would respond and then you could switch to a different channel to talk. So it would go something like this: LOU GUY, LOU GUY this is the FISHINMAN on 16 FISHINMAN, LOU GUY ON 16 Swich and answer 68, 69, 71,72 ect FISHINMAN on 68 FISHINMAN this is the DINGHY LAMMA hows the fishin', can you tow me in, do you have any extra beer ect. Then you guys can converse the rest of the day as needed--on a working channel, much like calling for a radio check. The benefit of this is that for saftey reasons all boats should be monitoring 16 and when out on the water how does anyone know if there is another LOU boat out there or not and if so what their name is. The generic call signal on the official call channel is the way to go.
  17. I have a GPSMAP 712C color plotter, it has been on the boat since 2004 and is rock solid. I never even had to look at the owner's manual until this year when I hooked it up to my AP14, the manual was still under the cuddy cushions where I put it 6 years ago. I have some form of chip that provides a chart overlay, with it I do not need a depth finder to know my overall and in the spring it show me if there is a reef up ahead that I may have forgotten about. I will consider Garmin if and when I decide to upgrade to a multifunction unit, and when I do I'm putting the one I have on my little Lake Erie boat.
  18. I say we all go to Tom's place and celebrate!! Happy big one Ray!!
  19. In their hayday 1980-1990 the evil eyes and red eyes were made by Scotch Game Calls/Red Eye Lures in Elba, NY on Old Oak Orchard Road. The owner was my neighbor and I never had to buy one. In his early articles in the INFisherman, Orvac would talk about running "fast" with these lures. We used to stack them above J-Plugs in the fall and the black and silver pictured above was a low light killer back when kings used to stage infront of the Oak. When trolling the wall we put them on the riggers and J's on flat lines. The Pirate and NK with their silver plating and fancy tape designs caught the eye of the angler and the locals began buying the new fancy lures over the painted ones. Cptcove you can catch fish on anything (lures) if you know how to present it. Today I would not waste my money on an evil eye, I would buy a 42 second spoon.
  20. I would tie on a yellow echip and a green fly (Tomic Green Hammer, Howie Green crinkle, Moonshine GP) Just buy 4 of them, but if you must have some variation get a white glow on white spin Dr and a DW No-see-um That is all you need for the fish, the rest would be for you. If you must have a chrome then get the spin Dr gator and run a Moonshine Carbon 14 fly behind it.
  21. Heard this conversation on the radio on Monday between a rec and charter capt. LMAO (names not given) BL -- Did you make it out here to the deep water? S -- We fished in the ice water and took a couple of small fish then we went 6 miles out but our fishfinder (HB) was not reading bottom so we came back in to fish the ice water. BL --Well... you really don't need to know where the bottom is out here, just put the riggers down 50, 60, 70 & 80 and you will catch fish S -- I really don't like fishing when I don't know where the bottom is, so I will just stay in here where I know the bottom is at 100 foot WTH -- I guess the bottom out 6 miles might come up and bite some fishermen in the aft!!!
  22. Chinooker, GREAT FISH I AM SOOOOOO JEALOUS!!! Would love to have one of them on the wall in the cabin of my boat!!! Yankee, We took 4 keeper sized atlantics in the last 2 weeks and only one fought well, one was on the 500' copper so it may have fought hard but we didn't know it. The other two didn't do much. As smaller fish go...A 10 lb king takes the cake....and the drag! The fighting Atlantics and 'bows just jump alot as clients winch them to the boat. Maybe I should loosen the drag on the 30# flea free Big Game?????????????...Naw....straight to the net, no tangled lines and if they get off..............one less fish to clean!!! No rhyme or reason to the lures they hit, flashers, green glow spoons & BT stingers trolled in temp. 80-120 FOW
