I echo signalmans thoughts. There’s a ton of us 18-19ft aluminum that make it out when it’s safe to do so based on weather, having the safety gear / electronics etc. A 16ft is a whole other league that just puts more risk into it. Sure you can do it, but if your looking for someone to say go ahead so you can feel good about doing it........ I’ve got a 19ft and wouldn’t be offshore with out my kicker, gps, and vhf and all the while my having cell phone. Is it over kill? I look at it’s mandatory. That’s me. For what’s its worth, that lake can kick up waves in a half hr that can make life miserable let alone if something happens mechanical your worst day. If your hooked into trolling on lake O, get a deep v 18 or bigger with a kicker that has some basic electronics. If you can’t afford it, jump in on a charter with friends during mid summer if the bites offshore. Just an opinion and a suggestion to your question. Everyone has one. Be safe out there. What a grind.... I still think we didn’t place any fish this year because I never got a 2020 pin to put in my visor. Lol. Superstitious.....yep. So we ended with nothing bigger than 7.5 lbs with an avg size of 4-5 lbs. A total of 29 for the weekend, 75% of them on the gamblers in deep water. Slow moving. The rest were on copper wire on the shelf’s. My oldest son is a natural now with a pflueger. Wish I gave him more time and it wasn’t so windy. Couldn’t catch a fish on junk lines. Just too slow but I sure tried to get the Sutton’s to roll. Monday we only ended with two and I’d say we fished the hardest that day in the wind. What we had sat and sun was gone for Monday. As I mentioned before, lots of lampreys and scarred fish. We need those under control no doubt. Kudos to PA27 who always is into good fish. Also to MJ B. I think it was her first derby, Ron will have to correct me but sported a spot in Woman’s. Nice going. Also had a Brother who stood strong for a while but managed to stay in a spot in the men’s category the last day. I told myself I was going to relax a little more this derby, I think I accomplished that. Had a good cigar and put the auto pilot on. It was good chatting it up with other Lou members at the dock or seeing them out on the water. Roy Boys, as always thanks for the hospitality. Till next year. I’m in agreement on the lamprey issue. I would say we would first have to agree there’s something wrong with population / size of lakers. It appears we’re missing a yrs class or two. I would like to hope it’s on the rebound and that stocking will make up the loss in the next 3-5 yrs with these 4-6 lbrs maturing to the 10+. I had plenty of lampreys in my boat with every other fish scared. I sure hope it’s high on the list to fix. If it’s not the lamprey, then it needs to be found out real soon. Personally I think the bait is a good thing. Rather have it than not. Look at Keuka. You won’t need Kings, plus it would create more of a dilemma with the fisheries and competition. I would say if it trailers good and is set up correctly you could just shorten them. Just have to do it carefully unwrapping the carpet so when your finished shortening the wood you can rewrap the end nicely and not have to redo the whole bunk. I’m in agreement on the 2 person min. It’s not about making anyone feel like there not good enough or experienced enough. We all have stories of the bad examples. We’re talking Lake Ontario I’m assuming. Might be a little different on the finger lakes, not that bad things can’t happen but your zone of safety is completely different than lake o. As far as other tournys like Bass typically Ive only participated in them where riders or non boaters were mandatory. PDFs were mandatory while running.
