  1. The mornings have been too cold to get my kayak out lately so I have been shore bound. Nice fish, I got one about the same size out there this summer but threw it back and didn't get a weight measurement, just the length. Now I know about how much it probably weighed! Getting any eyes out there this fall? This summer sucked for me there
  2. I have had a horrible fall for eyes as well. As much wind as we have had, each night I went out in October it managed to be dead calm with only pickerel hitting. One night I stung 2 eyes and dropped both at a rods length away. Gave up on em after that and have been catching rainbows from shore since Halloween
  3. Only being able to run 2 lures at a time out of my kayak had me trying everything I had and only 1 lure scored for me and it scored a hat trick with adult Majors one morning in September. Metallic green Hot n Tot without rattles
  4. Sorry I take that back, I thought this was the MVP Plug thread
  5. Only being able to run 2 lures at a time out of my kayak had me trying everything I had and only 1 lure scored for me and it scored a hat trick one morning in September. Metallic green Hot n Tot without rattles
  6. sliders or paddle tailed worms about 2" long on a 1/16 oz jig head. color depends on the day. white or green works best for me.
  7. This time of year it's hard to beat minnows under a float but small plastics on the edge of a weed line can be killer.
  8. my best tip is to keep your bait moving slowly. Do not dead drift. Perch become couch potatoes in a trance when your bait sits still haha. That's my tip and I'm sticking to it.
  9. I never really understood the reason to keep lake trout in the first place? It keeps customers happy to catch and bring home fish but honestly aren't they awful to eat? I never have tried them smoked but everything else I have tried has failed. If anyone wants to share a good recipe let me know and I will start fishing them again in the finger lakes.
  10. 4 year old fish, that's what I'm talking about! I don't know enough about how to make that happen but if the DEC can solve that one it would be awesome. Therefore, I like the theory.
  11. I thought the fish responded to water temps to determine when to spawn? If that were the case then wouldn't Alaskan salmon genetics not be affected by our later spawning season? I do understand the philosophy that Lake Ontario salmon have evolved over the years to survive in their current environment where a new strain may fail here but I don't necessarily agree with the water temp issue. Would like to see them grow a little bigger though like we used to see 'em. I haven't caught a 30#er in 5 years or better. Maybe throw a batch in here and there and see what happens rather than putting all the eggs in one basket?
  12. i trolled from selkirk to the SR and back 3 times sunday from 40' to 13' and didnt get a hit or see any jumps the whole morning.
  13. Cool thanks. I have a NK magnum spoon in Natural born killer I was thinking of running behind a green jet diver on 1 rod and maybe a hot color hot shot 35 straight lined on the other rod to start with at least. I have a fish finder on the kayak so I will have to see what depth I'm getting the most marks at and go from there.
  14. I would love to get a salmon out of my kayak this season. i hope the wind is down on sunday so i can try. are hot shot 35s too small or should i troll with something bigger? this is my first year trolling for salmon and still learning.
  15. i fished the mouth of grindstone last night a little with no luck. could have actually taken the kayak since i have been in much worse with no problem
  16. Scratch that plan, 14mph winds tomorrow and unless it slows down to half that by late afternoon I will be forced to fish from the pier.
  17. Awesome, weather permitting I will be out there in my kayak tomorrow afternoon hoping to get a rod to fire. How far down do I need to get my lures? I have a jet diver 40 to run a spoon and probably will run a plug on the other rod.
  18. hoping to try out there or selkirk tomorrow in my kayak. Have to check the weather/ wind report and see if it's a possibility. Thanks for the report.
  19. I tried along the south side of rocky point north of Rays Bay at camp sunday and monday mornings and marked lots of fish on drop-offs from 27'- 40' but only picked up a couple smallmouths trolling 25'-30' down with my kayak. Lake was a little rough for the little boat with 3'+ rollers so I only trolled a few laps each trip out.
  20. great thanks, good to know. probably going to stop at Fat Nancy's when I get off 81 on my way up and pick up a few to try.
  21. Heading to Stoney Point this weekend and hoping to hit another big 'eye like I did in July on a deep diver. What colors are best to try? I only have 1 black/silver and 1 perch but I know there are an array of choices out there for reef runners and thundersticks and can only fish 2 rods out of the kayak and prefer to use known producers. Thanks!
  22. Wow nice job. I have been blanked my last 3 trips out with 2 morning trips and a dusk trip this past monday. Marked a ton of fish along the drop- offs along the East shore from 38'- 44' but haven't had a single hit trolling about 2.5- 3 mph gps speed. Looks like sunday I'll have to push out a little deeper. One thing I do know about this lake is to be persistent even if you have a bunch of slow outings. I am running a 6' leader of 15# fluoro- coated P Line off of braided main line but can't see the fish being line shy with the water being the color it is? I was complaining about only smallmouths a few weeks ago and now would gladly hook up with them all morning long!
  23. Good info, at least I know I was on the right track just not getting them to bite. I have been completely guessing with my paddling speed but just sold both my fish finders last night on ebay so I can order a Lowrance Mark 4 Chirp that will take the guesswork out for me at least. Good luck over the weekend, I'll probably be fishing along shore on Sunday since my kayak is electronicless for now. Tuesday morning I trolled the South West and East shores and straight up the deep hole at the southern end with nothing but 2 large rock bass to show for it.
  24. Nice, that was just last week? Was it a tiger or a purebred?
  25. Wow 20 minutes is impressive to say the least! Great fish to catch whether they are 30" or 50" but the rarity of the catch is what makes them such a prize. I still think if I got one that big I would have a fiberglass replica made and let it go considering how old a purebred like that must be, I'm guessing 25 y/o? Maybe 20 for a tiger since hybrids grow faster?
