In the finger lakes I consider this transition from when the fish are feeding on the deep alwives which like to school up in the deep stable water in the winter 120-220ft down over deep depths. As the water begins to warm the alwives rise a bit and come closer to shore. Often this is when we have some of the best luck on landlocks and most of the time we stay off the beaten path that most guys take which is running stick baits and spoons flatlining and off short cores as close to shore as possible. We will instead fish depths of 80-250 and run flasher/fly combos, spoons and even sticks down to depths of 60-80ft. Thermoclines and temp haven't usually set up by then and they aren't bottom oriented however they are feeding heavily on bait so some days are going to be a struggle and others you will have a field day. Try running these flasher flies off a dipsy diver on a wire diver rod! You'll be surprised at how these fish fight in the spring.. weve had divers set on a 3 setting out 190 before roughly 75 ft down and saw the fish jump behind the boat before the rod moved then watched them scream drag like a king salmon!

Everything has it's time and place for them. Spoons, sticks and flasher fly combos. Most of the time spoons and sticks will out fish flies for them however mid spring when the better size salmon are transitioning from their deep winter patterns to the spring patterns they can be caught mid water column on spin doctors and flies quite well trolling at the right speeds and with proper leader length behind the flasher

2019-2020 Western zone season dates
suttontroller94 replied to thejigger's topic in Waterfowl / Bird Game
Wow what a joke.... they want us to harvest resident birds and less migration birds but yet still harvest resident geese. Yet they keep the stupid September season that kills far more migratory birds than it should and get rid of the season that we actually get to kill local birds... the flyway counsel and apparently this new one of New York state are both jokes... cater to the deer hunters and claim they are being conservative to the migration however they obvious have not a clue in the world what actually happens every year. 15 birds a day and unplugged guns was the worst thing that ever happened to the Atlantic flyway goose population and these guys are too dumb to realize that... -

We never had alot of luck with rigs that deep. Usually did better with downriggers and dipsys. Often spin doctors did really well however I'm sure with the proper amount of weight on a seth green and knowing how deep you were getting with it it could do well. Still far more work than flatlining though! But I feel like that's where the bigger landlocks hang

Was wondering this myself. From my understanding is like fishing used to be amazing on Sodus. Would like to try this weekend. What depths should I place my tip ups in and with what for bait? Is it a waste to bother while out in perch depth or is it worth a try?

March season definitely isn't the best for it either but at least then the limit is only 5 and you need plugged guns however unfortunately we know New York won't take any responsibility for ultimately having a big role in this problem. I'm sure September season will remain the same days and March won't change because too many people complain about goose poop in parks and think of geese as a whole instead of the differences in the migratory and resident populations

Kevin this has been a topic of discussion recently with alot of my hunting buddies. Hate to say it but New York needs to take a little responsibility for killing alot of Atlantic flyways migratory canadas during last 2 weeks of September every year for the last 2 years our state is just as much at fault as Canada. Just my opinion however 50-100 bird piles 90% of the time are not resident honkers

Keuka Sunday 23rd - question for trollers
suttontroller94 replied to Lively1's topic in Finger Lakes Discussion
There is another guy in trollers association that runs rigs off otter boards aswell. Interesting to see it done and not easy to duplicate. Yet highly effective. Makes those high water column leaders more productive being away from boat aswell -

Amped up for honker season!
suttontroller94 replied to suttontroller94's topic in Waterfowl / Bird Game
A lot of the typical 40,60,80 birds feeds this year but I will say I'm happy with the amount of 100+ bird feeds and the 250-300bird feed im watching now aswell! Dont usually see those so early in September -
