  1. I have fished in alot of areas in the Gulf. I love eating most all types of fish but I cant get into anything in the Gulf except shrimp that I peel myself. My least favorite is red fish and spec trout. My oldest son has lived in San Antonio for 9 years. I do however like the hogs if harvested in dry areas away from any swamps.
  2. My plan was to use a 4 bead chain swivel for a connection between the main line and a 7.5' fluro leader
  3. Thanks. Yes Sweeden made. I bought them after my first trip to Lake O in 1992 I believe. They are so smooth and well built. I think they are about perfect for planer board reels.
  4. I have 4 Abu- Garcia 5300 reels. I am putting on 15 lb big Game. It looks like I can only get 205 yds on. I am considering putting 30 lb braid for backing to give me more line for the occasional King during spring fishing. I am considering 8 lb fluro leader. So how much line total would be recommended for the odd king in the mix? Is 300 yds with a 8 lb leader enough, or should I go with 300 yds and a 10 lb leader? I will be fishing a 21' Duckworth with 6 lines Thanks
  5. Yet another attempt to regulate stupidity
  6. There are many You tube videos that explain it all. The settings are boat specific depending on what was mentioned above about your wiring and leakage.
  7. Very nice. Thanks for the post. The mooching reels are my #1 choice for Atlantic salmon and brook trout fishing with lead core. But I have had so many issues with the Daiwa's in the past I have gotten away from them. And as Rick mentioned, if you have inexperienced anglers on board it can be a challenge and frustrating. Considering we have a lot of 1.5-4 lb fish and troll sewn smelt a lot of the time, how light can the drags go? And are they smooth at light settings? With sewn bait we want the drags to be smooth and as light as possible to let line out with the lightest hit. I really like the 2/1 as well as the option to get one handle vs two. Edit: $730 us I am sure they are worth it but Ol Joe better get the 3ed round of checks out soon
  8. I have owned a few Daiwa's for years. I have had several Okumas but not the Cold Waters. I have several Okumas that the line counters are always giving me issues. Are the Cold water reel line counters improved? Other then that how do the two compare? Thanks
  9. I am ordering some equipment to rebuild some of my old rods for my Grandchildren. I will put my name on them hopefully for them to use for many years after I am gone. I take them all fishing whenever I can.
  10. I was checking out You Tube last evening. I think I will strip and rebuild some of my dozens of old rods I have kicking around. These guys took junk and made them not only look like new but customized to be fully functional. Everything but the blanks seems cheep to purchase
  11. How many of you guys build your own rods? I ordered some items to fix some of my rods. While I was researching I looked over some of the kits and blanks. Man the blanks are not cheep but I can see some advantages. I was on the Mud Hole site.
  12. The first price I saw was $3,700 but I have sense seen three different prices for the reactor 40. https://www.mygreenoutdoors.com/garmin-reactor-40-hydraulic-corepack-w-smartpump-v2-010-00705-78/?gclid=Cj0KCQjwsuP5BRCoARIsAPtX_wG-RDhbFpc_WtQ0_PDnF80UPOL8nxvLtK5ygUT8UMWDgkbBInF-1_gaArf6EALw_wcB
  13. Lack of support by some of these companies is why I no longer buy Furuno. I just bought a Garmin Ultra and the TR-1 in April now they tell me they may not support the TR-1 much longer. I told them "Why would I ever buy anything Garmin again when you will not support something I bought new 3 months ago". The rep said "well that has been replaced with the Reactor". The difference between the TR-1 and the Reactor as far as I can see is about 3X the money.
  14. Two pieces I saw were 4-5" and 8-10' long
  15. While fishing Lake O Thursday-Saterday I saw several logs floating. Those would make a mess for sure it they were hit just right.
  16. I bought a new boat in April. Its a 20.6 Duckworth. I installed a 99 Yamaha kicker with the TR-1 autopilot. I have 25 years of experience running APs on commercial boats. This works great but sometimes 3-10 times per day it goes into "Standby mode" and stops steering the boat. Some times to does it when I walk back to adjust the riggers and the boat tips slightly but many times it will go into stby when there is no movement aboard the boat. Any idea what could cause this?

Note: I did not think to look at my voltage when this happens and I am only running one battery.
  18. I should add I only have 30-35 lure choices so my options were limited. The first day we had 7 small kings all on a carbon 14 at 105-110 down in 145-150 fow. I try to avoid small fish so I dropped down to 125-140' the next two days. FF seemed to get the most hits for me yesterday. I stacked spoons above the two riggers 15-18' above the 8-10 back without one strike all day.
  19. As others stated i did not see temperature until i got to 100-110' and 55-58 degrees. I was 145-160 down 125-140. I have no experience with Kings and I did not get one over 9-10 lbs but others said it has been tough also. I did miss 7-8 fish yesterday and at least two screamers. It seemed like the kings were just nipping at the baits not overly aggressive.I avoided the fleet as much as possible and just looked for bait and larger fish in temperature and worked those areas.
  20. First time fishing my own boat on Lake O. We fished Thursday, Friday and today. We came not really knowing a lot but we do fish a lot in Maine so we figured we would give it a shot. We landed 12 kings all but one was small 15-20” so we released them. We did get one 8-9 lbs. We did manage some beautiful lakers one at over 26 lbs my wife caught. We landed 2 whitefish, 4 browns, 12 kings, 20+ lakers and a white bass so it was a great trip. The sea conditions Thursday morning was tough but it improved as the day went on. We are already looking forward to our next trip. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
