Looking to replace my Lowrance 15 GPS fishfinder unit with a new unit. I only use it for GPS and plotter. It no longer marks fish saved and black n white hard to see. Know most units are combo units but don't plan on using transducer. Have little used Furuno 585 with thru hull transducer  as main fish finder. Looking to spend around $500-$700

I had the same situation last year , and decided to get a Garmin with chartplotting and fishfinder. The Furuno only has 50 and 200. That makes the cone quite narrow and not very useful in shallower water. The garmin provides me with a much wider beam, with depending on the transducer used has wavelengths that do not interfere with the Furuno,  which is not only useful for shallower water, but also for copper on the boards. When I see fish on the side, I adjust my course a bit so the copper will go to where the fish is. Besides, the Garmin has a a nice big screen.

Thanks. Very useful info. Food for thought Dont like hanging transducers on the stern since I had it replaced , my question is can I have two thru hull transducers one on either side of boat  , will they interfere.? If I can I can split screen chartplotter gps and ff screen What model did u end up buying ? So basically then the 585 has its limitations sonar wise. Dont think I ever learned to use it right. Kept  it simple n auto mode

Another option to look at is the Furuno GP1871f  7" ($820.00 +/-) and the GP1971f  9"($1200.00  +/-) . Both are already setup for your thru hull transducer. The dual freq 50/200 kHz will give you good deep water trolling imaging and track the rigger balls. You can always add the side scanning transducer if you want to use it for skinny water fishing. The brochure will give you the highlights of the unit and the transducer chart will give you the unit/transducer compatibility. You'll be able to get rid of both of your existing units and replace them with one. The Furuno 585 is still a dam good unit and saleable to help reduce you overall replacement cost.

Stinger thanks for the info, will look into what you suggested. Have no idea what F 585 is worth on market. Sure I have two transducer mounts for transom one is a 1K transducer that was only used one season. Adding a side scanner transducer would involve a transom mount?

Used 585 on market is 350-400....as I am currently trying to sell one in that range with all mounting hardware.
