Gusting winds send rafter 1 1/2 miles offshore

Posted by Catie O'Toole September 14, 2007 3:11PM

Gusting winds sent a rafter in Lake Ontario a mile and a half from shore Friday afternoon in

Oswego, U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Edwar Uceta said.

The man, whose name was not released, was in the rubber raft along the shoreline when the

winds started picking up, Uceta said. The winds reached 30 mph, he said. Someone spotted the man in the raft waving his hands about 1:54 p.m. northeast of Fort Ontario in Oswego. Uceta said the man was trying to get someone's attention because he could not figure out how to return to shore because of the strong winds. The Coast Guard came to his rescue about 2:03 p.m. The man was not hurt.
