So above is the biology of it. Practically speaking they create clusters of “gunk” on your lines as you reel them in. If you do not take care to manage them as you reel in either a lure or a fish the fleas will eventually gather at areas like knots / rod tips etc and will eventually prevent you from reeling any farther.
Many was to prevent them The larger diameter your mono is the less likely they will stick. We go heavy with our mono when fleas start to show up in June and just leader down appropriately.
We don’t have much trouble with our wire either but it is always better to prevent them than to try to clean the line when a king is hot at the back of boat and you need 3 more feet to net
