  2. The information given above is all good. I will be in Younstown Thursday before the holiday about noon and leaving Monday early morning. If you are having trouble catching fish you are welcome to give me a shout on the radio Thursday or Friday. Depending on the chatter over the weekend I may or may not have the radio on to answer but I am always willing to help. I will be launching out of Fort Niagara (Boat is a Thompson 240 Fisherman) Good luck and tight lines
  3. I will be at the bar in two weeks for the long holiday weekend. I have been going there that week for the last ten years or so. I have four riggers and dipsys. The dipsys have both flasher flys. the riggers I will split fifty / fifty. I find most items with green in it works well. Also do not leave out a white flasher (my second choice). Let the fish dictate if you should have more of one or the other, but always keep in mind, if you are catching fish and you change something and the fishing slows or stops put back the last thing you changed. That item was calling the fish in for you even if it was not getting hit. Also always have at least one flasher down there. They do call a lot of fish in. Good luck and tight lines

    ANY IDEAS?

My vote is for a planer board mast where the reel is also located in the same area.

  6. My vote is for the 13# torpedo weight. I have a 19' boat with under a eight foot beam. Four riggers in the back. I have had them down well over 100 feet in bad currents at the Niagara bar without issues.
  7. A friend of mine did well off Catfish Creek last week.
  8. I have two sets of snacks I bring. If it is the family I carry a full lunch of ham and cheese sandwiches, peanut butter crackers, chips or crackers(ritz, gram, wheat thins, cheezit,) pretzels Fruit salad granola bars, yogurt, soda and water. This is my shopping list for a four day fishing trip plus some I can not think of right now. For trips with friends my list looks very similar to above. Chips, pretzels, jerky, nuts, soda, and Gatorade. Good luck and tight lines to all. Come on season!
  9. Captspike, I just made my own. I picked up the proper size pvc tube at Lowe's or Home Depot. Cut two square holes for two of the plactic/wood pickets used for deck railings (cut to length). Cut the rest of the pvc for the rods and screw to the picket. I think mine holds 12 rods. I can add a picture later if you need if I can dig it out from winter storage. This is a cheep and quick project and you will hold more rods than the store one.
  10. I am the author of the thread below on this subject. I had found a good deal on this unit and also wanted input. Like you I received one positive reply. I ordered one last Friday night and received it today. I wanted a separate unit from my combo gps/fishfinder. I went with a solo gps/chartplotter because of the few threads talking about interference with multiple transducers. The unit looks good on the internet and at $390 it will not break the bank. That was the best price I could find with free shipping. Good luck and tight lines
  11. Was thinking of getting this unit for an add to my combo unit. Looking for feedback good and bad from persons that have used this unit. Thank you all for the info.
  12. 30 lb big game as well here, eight foot long and no snubber. Good luck and tight lines
  13. I do not think you can go wrong with a spring (May) trip to the bar. I make the 500 mile trip there every year on the holiday weekend.
  14. First let me say I am not a tire guy. What I was informed when getting tires for my trailer was "long distance trailering = radial, short distance = bias" It has something do do with the heat generated when driving. I travel 300 to 500 miles to get to the lake four times a year. I do not want to jinks myself but I have not had an issue yet. Seven years on the first set and still looked good but changed them anyway. I figured I was due. I also trailer locally, just do not know how many more miles I put on them. Good luck.

  16. I just wanted to thank you for such a great site.
  17. 50 pound big game here as well. No issues so far.
  18. I use the fort Niagara boat launch without issues in May. It is only a couple of minutes down stream.
  19. Send Cannon an e-mail. They got back to me within three days when I questioned the 13# torpedoes with my older mag 10's. (older mag 10's are good for 16# by my reply) Good luck
  20. As posted before, that is just the rattle. Some days the fish want a rattle some days not. I tie my own flies as well. It is not needed most of the time.
  21. The one on the far left looks like a Hi-Tech spoon. A small local company in N.Y. I used to have their info but can not find it right now. I know he has a booth at the big E sportsman show in Mass and would assume he has a booth at some of the N.Y. Shows.
  22. All above is great advice. I did not read it all so excuse me if it was mentioned before. I know it was mentioned to take a charter. This is great advice but does cost a few dollars and you should do it. Another way to get first hand knowledge and cost nothing or get paid for it is to be an observer on a tournament boat. All year there are teams posting the need for an observer. These teams are some of the better fishermen you can find in some tough fishing conditions. There are also some great non tournament teams out there that also are looking for a fishing partner for a day or to, so keep an eye on the posts. You will see these posts for a partner or two here and there. As for your questions. 1.What size reel should i be looking at? How much line should it hold? Should i buy four of the same? Should they have line counters? ( I like all my reels to hold about 1000 feet of line weather it be wire, mono, or backing for other presentations. Diawa or Akuma make some great reels. The sealine or convectors will do just fine) 2.What type of rods? again should they be all the same? ( They will not be all the same and would depend on the presentation. I would start with some of the cheaper brands and know you will upgrade later. If you have the extra money now you can bye some better brands but I think you would be better now to bye a better reel than rod) 3.What type of line? Should i have a mix of mono, lead core, braided? (mono for the riggers and wire for the divers to start. You will add lead core and copper later once you get the hang of the fishery) 4.What would be a good selection of lures to begin with? ( lures are different for every individual. What works for me does not work for my friend. I like the dolphin colors and the frog in glow and reg. patterns to start) 5.What speed should i be trolling at? I know this changes due to conditions but just a starting point will help. (2.7 gps to start. Go faster and slower till you get hits. As you stated it will change day by day but @.7 in the niagara area seams to work very well for me. 6.What size of cannon balls? ( I like the 13# torpedo weights like A-tom-mic sells) 7.Any info pertaining to fishing Bluffer's is welcome (I do not know exactly your area, but the St. Catherine's area is great in the spring.) 8.Where's the fish? (just kidding) See #7 50 to 80 feet down) Good luck and tight lines
  23. A friend of mine found his trail camera smashed this morning. Guy is not to smart, left the sim card with his picture on it. Friend is on his way to the station right now.
