  2. Gene, I spent a day on Lake Erie with my uncle and we were running 4 dipsys two traditional and two off of one planerboard. The planer board dipsys were the smaller ones set on 0 and out 145' on 30# power pro. They were running 45' down. CC
  3. Only the English would think that a trophy!! Looks like fertilizer for half an acre to me!!!
  4. I have 2 new Raymarine DS500X units. Bought them to resell on ebay, but too busy. Will unload them for $250.00 each. Carl Bish 716-560-2878
  5. Shimano -- Charter Special, Takota, TLD Penn- 320LD, 330 Okuma -- Solterra Abu Garcia -- 7000lcsync, 7000sync Diawa 27 & 47 SGLC The charter special, solterra and 7000's, 320LD are fantastic reels great power for fighting fish, but the clickers break. CC
  6. I know that you are supposed to turn the clickers off when you have a salmon running, but............... Does anybody know of a reel that does not burn out the clicker when you don't turn it off. I have had problems with many different reels some pricy ones and some cheap. I just can't get a clicker to last all season. With new people on the rods every day it is necessary to have the clicker on so I know what is going on with the fish................Any help on this??? How about you scotty guys if you set your rods with the clicker on during free fall do you burn them out? I've killed several on the down stroke before I figured out to turn them off. Thanks, CC
  7. 1st -- 50 pound Power Pro is the only way to go (I would say that fireline is junk, but then I might get censored ) 2nd -- If you use your wire 100 times a year you will not get 3 years out of a spool and by the time you get done trimming all your curley Q's out you will not have any wire left on the spool after 2 years. 3rd -- Fleas are not a big deal, both collect fleas the wire requires you to saw the fleas off the PP allows you to twist and pull the line cutting a 30 inch glob of fleas instantly. (and your hand too if your not careful - downside) 4th -- Slide divers can run on braid as can long divers, jet divers, clip weights ect. Doing that on wire is not good. 5th -- Braid does not kink (that's huge) 6th -- As for depth I have taken fish on my PP on one side at 270 and my wire on the other at 280 and the riggers 80 - 100. I think it they go rather deep. I am not sure of the advantage of wire's weight ratio to diving ability and believe it is more a function of diameter to resistance and they are rather equal. But for sure resistance factor aside wire has a greater density than the power pro. CC
  8. I have them on my corner riggers (new 2 weeks ago) seem to work fine for about 75 fish so far. Easy to rig, see and set. I am a little scared cause if they break I loose a $300.00 rod/reel CC
  9. I run my in auto mode, except for the range and frequency. I set the range to the temp zone and the frequency I set on the split screen showing 50 on one side and 200 on the other. CC
  10. Should have stuck around at the oak for a couple of hours by 10 am the lake was to a gentle roll and flat by noon. CC
  11. If at all possiable, keep the transducers apart. The Fish Hawk operates at a frequency in the 70's and your Raymarine is 50 or 200 and they should not interfere if they are next to each other, but distance between them will insure that they do not. As for trimtabs, if you mount your transducer on the tabs you will have to make sure that the transducer is "looking" at the probe when you are using it. You will also have to make sure that the transducer does not interfere with the operation of the trimtabs. Currently, I have my tranducer on a temporary mount that kicks up a great rooster tail when I am underway, but it costs me about 300 rpms and 6 kts on my top speed, you would not want to mount it permenently like this. I see that as a risk to trimtab mounting. Dont worry, once you get it installed you will have no problems with it and you will enjoy never having to deal with coated cables, fleas in your antenna, having to move your release around or all those other PITA stuff that the cheaper units come with as baggage!!! CC
  12. I run a blacks release above the probe and run anything off of it. Some days the probe brings them in and a short lead is hot some days the rigger is the slow one -- that is the day I run the flashers off the rigger 40' back. Today I fished on a friends boat and he had his blacks release below the probe, just above the ball. That worked fine as well. As long as your probe is reading and your not gettings tangles you are fine however you rig it, just use a good release. CC
  13. It is a small improvement made to the new fishhawk. It is nice not having to put a new battery in each day. I never tuned my probe on the old unit. I never thought that the use of batteries was a big deal, just a cost of doing business. Much cheaper than that smelly liquid I have to pump into my boat between trips!!!! The X-4 is great!! CC
  14. My recomendation would be to look for a 20'-22' Penn Yan. It is a glass boat. Can be pulled by a pickup and is a great Lake Ontario boat. You should be able to find one for less than $5K. If you have a bit more money to put into a boat, get a Grady White. If you are buying new the Sea Swirls really look great. The alumn is ok, but I like the weight of the glass boat. Plus you won't get called a 'tin can" CC
  15. My batteries went dead last night and left me stranded. I had those things in there since April 4th and used them for over 40 trips then all of a sudden nothing not even a speed reading. My bulk package of spare batteries ............. all used by my kids over the last 4 months for their video games. I'm writting a letter.........if the batteries are going to run out they ought to run out before my kids have time to use up my 64 pack of spares!!! CC
  16. The plan was to check out the inside water in hopes of finding a few Kings since we had our share of steelhead last evening. When we cleared the break wall we got a report that the temp was 69 degrees on the bottom in 100 foot, that sealed it and we smashed through the waves for an hour to get back to our honey hole from the night before. We set lines at the 32N line, began an NW troll, set the speed at 2.4 and dropped the lines in. The temp was 10 feet lower that last night and I believed that we stopped too soon, short of the down break and the loads of fish we found yesterday. We fished for about a half hour then the action began with a triple. The fish were snappin’ for 4 miles and when we turned the boat we were 12 for 18 with a big king, nice fat coho’s and big steelhead. We needed 3 more fish for our limit and I suggested that we change tactics to an exclusive King program and finish out the box with Salmon. At 11:30 we landed the 15th fish a nice 24 pound King. We continued on a south troll doing a little catch and release while we cleaned fish. We ended the day landing 22 fish!!! 17. Matt, No need to fill the board with those that do run it successfully, you see it is not them that have a problem it is the ones that have wire unraveling on their spools that have a problem. I do know that you have worked hard to identify the cause of failure of your line and in the future you will instruct your dealers and customers on how to properly install the wire onto reels. After all, how many of us used to just put wire on reels and then go fishing with it only to have the wire cut into itself and jam the spool. Only then did we learn that it is necessary to leave the line out behind the boat with a weight on it and respool it to insure that the line was wound tight enough. I must confess that I returned my spool prior to installing it so I am not one of the guys with a problem. In fact, I have no wire issues at all because I have found that 50# Power pro is equally efficacious and more versatile than wire for my style of trolling. I am finding more and more clients just do not want to land fish on the heavy lines -- dipsys and copper and while they may have their place in tourney and derby fishing; successful charter captains will need to adapt stratgies that continue to catch fish and keep clients happy and coming back. What good does it do you if you catch several more fish but your clients did not enjoy the experience? Good luck, I now dump you out of the net to catch you another day!!! CC
  18. Content removed by? WHY? Send pm please explain. CC
  19. Yankee -- GREAT CATCH!! There are two groups of fish out there Steels and Kings. We found that if you are on the hot side of the speed you boxed only Steels and if you were on the slow side you boxed mainly kings. Fished right next to a guy on Sat and we both had the same # of fish but he had kings and 3 bows, we had bows and 3 kings the difference my speed 2.6 - 3.0 his 2.2 - 2.5. I'm still having a hard time believing that just a little varriance in the speed made that much difference, but the boxes certainly showed it. (should of had ray on the boat) Were you on that slow side on Saturday? Sunday it did not matter they both hit at all speeds! CC
  20. Put a glow over the silver or put a glow under the silver ladder.
  21. All #4 all straight Glow Ghost Green Glow w/ Ladder Silver bullet orange head All with rattle Leads can effect action Run fast generally use them for inshore fishing Best Combat bait Use J's & Lymans #3 lime glow is a killer on 200 & 300 copper when fish are staging!! CC
  22. Lake Ontario at night ........ WHY?? When you can catch them in the day. I can understand fishing walleye at night when they come into the shallows where you can get them with a small boat or Swordfish cause they only feed at night. Besides, I have a hard time seeing in the dark. CC
  23. You have to go to the weigh stations to view it. I don't think there is a web posting of it. At the Oak used to give daily (major) updates but............................ CC
