  1. Wow Andy,, great perspective. I'm not sure of your age, but I turned 53 on Friday and I could have written the exact post (less the 500 acres, I wish)! Bad knees n all, I am of the same feeling regarding killing deer, I can appreciate a wallhanger, but if I got one my wife would have to convince me to mount it. I certainly don't crave one. I enjoy the hunt, the scenery and serenity. I have a young son and I am enjoying introducing him to the outdoors first, killing second. Squirrel hunting the other day with him was like a Canadian whitetail hunt for me. I recall while hunting in my 20s n 30s it was a religion, nj,ny bow gun muzzloader, all out,all seasons all the time. Not so much any more. Good to hear from you Andy. I will be up by Gray next week to get ready for a wallhanger! ! Lol
  2. That really does suck, but there is a silver lining. Hurricane Sandy basically "clear cur" every mature pine tree on the thousands of acres behind my house (Watershed). Two years ago this week it was. Today there is so much more young hardwood cover and its just got downright thick. i'm assuming just the added light penetration created much better cover.
  3. Sorry for hijacking the thread. Obama sucks.
  4. Good luck next year Rolmops, we will be out there.
  5. Lol Rolmops. I in fact am a red dock founding member. You are welcome any time... to visit! Have a drink or two. As far as your political position, i may have confused you with someone else, so apologies. Looking forward to fishing next year as well. You may have beaten us already! What's your boat name?
  6. Red Dock? Good idea! So I don't have the attention span to read the whole thread but I get it,,, if memory serves me Rolmops is a dues paying liberal and doesn't like the right wing crazy's. Like most of us. At least in terms of discussing politics.
  7. Not Catskill or Poconos. Loaded with deer n bears in North jersey. Don't tell anyone. Lol.
  8. I purposely ran one long leader n one short the last month of the season. 5 feet compared to 10. The longer out fished the short 3 to 1.
  9. 50. No snubber. It's not exactly a stelthy presentation in the first place
  10. All right,,,, all the nice things said about Brian I agree with ! But classy?? In terms of what? He wouldn't even be presentable if Marlene wasn't standing next to him!! I'm glad you got your boats back Rod
  11. Tough to tell, buy my guess is 200 ish. maybe.... narrow rump and high belly. A 400 plus is shaped like a Volkswagen!! lol
  12. I agree about the small boat issue... but if I were dealing with that issue i would pull the divers and give them what they want, if long rigger leads are the ticket? I have a 13 6 beam and most of late august i ran 4 or 5 rods, no more than 6. An example of lead lengths was from last week. an angler who I know well fished the whole week and ran primarily meat. If the rigger leads weren't at least 25' on the 11" paddles you couldn't get em to go. anything shorter was a bust compared to long leads. That presentation continued all week. He took almost 100 mature kings. Most guys, me included run the big meat rigs short, but thats not what they wanted.
  13. Capt. Rich gave the right answer IMO. I dont fish not to get tangles, its to catch fish. The fish will tell you what they want. stagger the leads when you start. if your coppers are going early then stretch the lead, if the divers are hot, shorten them. Its the action imparted on the FF based on the distance from the point of resistance, Diver is short.... copper is long or not much at all. If your 600 copper is hot, send the rigger down to 120' and stretch the lead. try to duplicate the action. Let the fish tell you as Capt. Rich said. There are ways to get the long leads up n down without tangling the divers.
  14. I'm kinda missing the point about having a loose drag on your dipsy and trying to sink a hook into a hard mouth pre spawn king? That is kinda opposite of the objective? Getting the hook set in a hard jaw would require resistance, so a tighter drag will accomplish that. I keep my drag as tight as possible without locking it down. 50# dipsy leader and a 50# fly leader! Your rod will break or terminal tackle fail before you will break off a leader. And I've never broken a rod. So let em pound on it. Then back off on the drag ,,, and no snubber. Just my opinion. And I agree it's the time of year. Hard mouth and short hits equals rough landing percentage.
  15. The best part about the current dates is the strategy involved. Most years you have to split your box between trout n salmon. Lots of tough decision making. Pro participation would definitely go down making it late August. Am's would probably go up so it's a wash. Keep it like it is.
  16. As Tom and Dan said... overhand loop knot. simple to do. can do the same thing with your rigger wire connections if necessary. I always do it with my power pro rigger cable. never fails.
  17. Ray is 100% right..... you can fish kings with a few flasher fly combos and as half dozen spoons and be successful IMO. Its about finding fish first and foremost.... they move!!! all the time... speed and trolling angle are the things I try to dial in first, without those two your success rate will suffer..... water color, sun/clouds or sun angle impact the lure selection. all these things come with trolling experience and thats many hours and years on the lake.... or a weekend with a successful, info sharing captain or friend. again, i would change trolling angle and speed or location long before changing lure presentation, considering you have a respectable combo down there. good luck !!!
  18. Unscrew the weight and take it off, lay the diver on a flat surface, see if its warped?
  19. good thread .... and you can never get enough info...
