Genny. 9-26
rolmops replied to rolmops's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
I just looked at a whole lot of googled images of all sorts of bass and it probably was just a large white bass. -
Fishing Report Your Name / Boat Name: ============== TRIP OVERVIEW ============== Date(s):9-26 Time on Water:06.30-10.00am Weather/Temp:50 Wind Speed/Direction:south-east at 15mph Waves: 3 to 4 feet Surface Temp: 64 Location:Genny river mouth and north to 90fow LAT/LONG (GPS Cords): =============== FISHING RESULTS =============== Total Hits: 3 Total Boated:1 Species Breakdown:Striped bass ?????????,steelhead Hot Lure: green dream weaver with added herring bone and eye (home made) Trolling Speed: 2.1-3.4 Down Speed: Boat Depth: 20 to 90 Lure Depth: 15 to 60 ==================== SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS Very choppy and tough weather for solo fishing. At first I joined the combat trolling crowd in front of the river. It was here that I picked up this 19 inch fish that for all practical purpose looked just like a striped bass.It even hit with the same ferocity as the ones I catch in Cape Cod Bay.Now I realize that there are no stripers in lake Ontario so it must have been some other species that I don't recognize, unless somebody has been doing some illegal stocking of hybrid striped bass of the type that is found in southern reservoirs. After leaving the crowd I went out to deeper water and hooked up twice with nice steelhead but it was almost impossible to bring them in, net them and steer the boat at the same time in the large waves that were out there,so both got off. It was a fun morning, probably the last for the big lake this year.It is Ibay from here on until next spring. ====================

Genny the evening of 9/22
rolmops replied to Yankee Troller's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
I'll hit the water either Saturday or Sunday, whichever works out better. I am sort of thinking the 3 or 4 hundred FOW and fishing for steel head.Does that make any sense this time of year or am I wasting my time?? -
Russel Station
rolmops replied to flyin lizard's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Forget about Russel station. The power plant is closed and there is not enough of a current there to attract any fish. -
Funny that should mention the rec boats. I own a cottage on Owasco lake but I hardly ever fish there in summer because of rec boaters,I used to escape to Keuka ... That just goes to show that everything is relative.

Keuka Lake, which is just around the corner from where you live,is much cleaner and has some great Lake trout and brown trout fishing. In general the lake is not as wind swept as Cayuga and Seneca.Best of all.It does not have Lamprey. Both Seneca and Cayuga have lots of lamprey. There is a great free launch site in Penn Yan.

Genny evening 9/17

I'll be chasing perch and pike in there before too long myself.Come to think of it, perch fishing is very relaxing compared to solo salmon hunting. -
Fishing Report Your Name / Boat Name: ============== TRIP OVERVIEW ============== Date(s):9-17 Time on Water:4pm-8pm Weather/Temp:nice weather Wind Speed/Direction:north/north-west Waves: choppy but easing up toward sunset Surface Temp: 66.4 Location:Genny river mouth and out north to about 70 fow LAT/LONG (GPS Cords): =============== FISHING RESULTS =============== Total Hits: 7 Total Boated:4 Species Breakdown:1 laker ,1 brown,2 kings Hot Lure: spinny with mountain dew/monkey puke dreamweaver Trolling Speed: 2.2-3.1 Down Speed:one of these days Boat Depth: 20 to 70 Lure Depth: 15 to 65 ==================== SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS There is a lot of bait in the river mouth and several salmon were visible slashing the water. At the end of the pier where the river water mixes in with the lake I got the brown on a monkey puke (gobi)lure and after some circling in the river mouth I went to 70 feet where there were big bait pods with big fish in tow.The bait was at 62 feet and at 35 to 45 feet. The 2 year old kings came in on the mountain dew at 40 feet and the laker (a 10 pounder) came in on a black ss dream weaver. There was a very clear temperature break at 40 feet down in the 70 fow area. ====================

Sorry for my ignorance,I figured as much when I saw your e-mail address, but then I forgot about it again. The main reason why I installed a vhf radio in my boat is the possibility of hooking it up to the gps and with one push on the "Emergency" button, your radio will start broadcasting your exact position on the water on most frequencies while also having the exact information as to who is on the boat because of a unique MMSI number that is being assigned to you and to your radio. If you don't mind I will insert your phone number in my phone book. Good luck this afternoon. -

I saw you out there this morning,on my way to try the 200 foot line.I tried to hail you on Channel 8 but no dice. You were right to stay close to shore, it was not until 250 FOW that we started marking bait and fish,at 220 foot down and by then the waves started to be decidedly unpleasant. -
I have very good luck with leadcore trolling live bait at roughly 90 foot down.I use 12 colors at 1.6 mph.The bait is available at the "Beverage Baron" in Penn Yan. ask for sawbellies. If he no longer has those you can also use pike minnows.the lakers have no preference.

JR Report I-Bay 8-23
rolmops replied to JR's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
That sounds like a great time spent on the water.Certainly better than my lure washing experience this Saturday. The stone quarry you work at,is that Dolomite on Whalen road? Cornelis. -
Ray,If you go to Wellfleet harbor, take a little road north from there and you will find a small bridge at the very north end of the harbor bay.The road is called Chequessed Neck Road,or just Neck Road. That little bridge has some great sea perch and striper fishing with the incoming tide.As the water comes into the riverside. There is no issue with waves or storm. I had good luck there using a bobber or just a very small sinker and letting the current carry it. The preferred bait was seaworms and sand eels

rolmops replied to momay4000's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Sure sounds like you had lots of fun. -
I am toying with buying either a Sub Troll,a Depth Raider or a new type Fish Hawk. What in your experience is the better gear and what gives the most bang for my buck? Thank you for your help and opinions, Cornelis.

JR Report I-Bay 8-16
rolmops replied to JR's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
IF I learned anything from you guys this Sunday it is that I have to be outside the harbor on the lake well before six in the morning.that way I can just follow "the fleet" to the rich grounds which were much closer than my wild goose chases. Just Fishin, I will remember your Well Craft. It looks like a very well set up rig. -

Fishing Report Your Name / Boat Name:rolmops ============== TRIP OVERVIEW ============== Date(s):8-16 Time on Water:6am-1pm Weather/Temp:hazy and hot Wind Speed/Direction:light Waves: none Surface Temp: 75 Location:14 miles north east of ibay due north of route#102 LAT/LONG (GPS Cords): N21 W 19 =============== FISHING RESULTS =============== Total Hits: 8 Total Boated:5 Species Breakdown:Kings Hot Lure: spin doctor with pink and blue dots with mountain dew fly Trolling Speed: 2.3-2.8 Down Speed: unknown Boat Depth: 450 to 500 Lure Depth: 90 feet ==================== SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS I decided to go after the steel head that Reeljerks had mentioned on these coordinates only to find out that they were long gone. There was some bait around at 80 feet so I lowered a spin doctor with a mountain dew fly and sure enough, after only 10 minutes it fired. It turned out to be a 23 pound king.A few minutes after it was brought to heel there was another hit and it went on that way for almost 4 hours. All the fish were well over 20 pounds.Except for one that I could not revive everyone was released. After 10 in the morning thing went dead. This sure beats washing lures ====================

Although it is possible,it may not be wise to take a 15 footer out on lake Ontario. You may want to consider going for lake trout and Landlocked (Atlantic) salmon in Seneca or Cayuga lake.I do a lot of lake, brown and rainbow trout fishing in Keuka and Owasco lake and although admittedly it is not as exiting as Lake Ontario it also is not as dangerous.

I would start with the cheap things first.Take the cowling off and put the muffs on when it is dark start the engine and check to see if your plug wire grounds out and sparks elsewhere toward the engine.Buy a spark tester in a car parts store put it in the line and see if the spark is ok.replace the plug. As for the sputtering engine, that is a fuel supply problem. The easy thing to do there is buying a can of seafoam, pour it into the fuel tank and take the boat for a nice long ride (1/2 hour) that should clean out the jets and other passages. The problems you describe sound like small maintenance issues and not one big problem so the best way to go is by getting the maintenance things done and only afterward look for a possible big ticket item. You can also go to a website called: http://www.iboats.com. once you are in there go the boating forums and choose the mercury forum. You can register and ask your question.Although the website is commercial these forums are strictly non commercial and they probably are the best engine trouble forums you will be able to find I am a member of these forums and so is Longline.
