  1. bobby123 and pap............great GREAT stories!!!! Ditto to what everyone else has said....Awesome stuff  ..!!!!
  2. Great report and nice mirror carp. Haven't seen one of those in many a moon. Course, I haven't targeted carp since I was a kid, when we used to corn, doughball, even bacon them up.....commons, leathers, mirrors, and escaped orange and blue "backyard pond" goldfish, all in the same waters....BTW, those orange and blue goldfish got large in those lakes in the wild....
  3. Congratulations U guys!! All 3 of ya !! Boy.... Quite a 2013 for U ....And now the real fun begins ..... ....!! (go for the trifecta...a new car....)
  4. Well before 9/11 and border security issues, when it was no big deal crossing back and forth from/to Canada, we fished from out of some place on the American side where we rented a large motored canoe and fished without even worrying about Canadian licenses and what not. We camped at a Provincial Park southwest of Brockville and did not even think of an issue of being hassled about stuff from the authorities. And we caught many dozens of smallies largemouths and northerns, plus panfish, mostly in Canada. The tons of readily biting smallies (with some eels too) were the main show. Ahhh.... If only we could make a time machine and go back to those easy going days of fishing having fun and few hassles from governments and such......Then bottle the essence and sell it.... ....!
  5. GAMBLER.....any news from the DEC on age of that laker....?
  6. Yeah, that really is a FAT laker! Guess us humans aren't the only ones with obesity issues.......
  7. Please elaborate if you can on that belly fat. I've never cleaned fish of any kind with anything like that in it....looks like sperm sacs......
  8. Justin.....That is a nice shot of a really nice time on Otisco. Looks like some decent meals there too!
  9. KIGI....NNiiiiicce! And new friends chip in 80lbs. of salmon.....to smoke.... SSSssswweeeeeet!! Looks like Caroline held the kings magic hand!!
  10. Joe g....I'm with u 100%.....!! For all of the reasons stated by you and others, these age limitations need to be changed. With voices expressing this issue, I'll bet we can get the rules changed for next season. And then your son, and yourself, even though he would be of age for the summer session, can feel good that y'all contributed greatly to the opening up of the derby! And I'll bet the derby sponsers would be glad too..........a win-win for all (excepting the fish ....)!
  11. 3feathers.....love Champlain. Lake Champlain United is new to me. Although I don't go there often, living in the fingers Big O area, I've never been skunked there....always the opposite. Thanks for the tip. We R lucky to live in a state where from corner to corner, throughout, fresh to salt, there R hundreds of great different waters to fish in....
  12. An electric will work just fine. All the you tube videos R great familiarizing tools. So can be good illustrations in books. Practice is a real key ingredient if you tend to be ham handed. Remember that some of the videos R of pro's who do this for from 10-20 $s/hr or more depending. And the # 1 thing.....make sure your knife blade is as sharp as possible....cheap steel to Cutcos, Rapalas or grandma's old kitchen knife.... even a pocketknife if that is what is available; they all will get dull with each use. Learn how to keep 'em sharp and U can butcher up anything with skill and ease...with a little practice...
  13. Ceed.... thanks for those "reel" clarifiations on ........I love it......."rainheads".
  14. There might be a rare one there in the winter, just passing through, but not worth targeting. For lakers now, the main lake is it.....Water in the bay is too shallow and warm for them....
  15. Don't know what you're using, but several years ago, we went nuts reeling in smallie after smallie, with EELS mixed right in with them, using ........nightcrawlers weighted with half oz sinkers on the bottom in 35 or so fow (8lb line). Don't usually fish with live bait, but this was a rare time to do so and we were not sorry. Both fish fought superbly with this still fishing style and we did not mind roasting up some of the eels on the fire on the shore of the "larry", as they would normally make a nest of our terminal ends with their writhing action when fighting........
  16. Hey man, while your up there, even if you're not specificaly targeting them, hope you nail your first musky, and a good one at that....... !
  17. Remembering the days in spring when U could troll out for a few hours in the morning and catch some nice salmonids for the cooler and then come in close to shore and absolutely crush big NICE smallies (1-4lbs.) on almost every cast with black grub tail 1/8 oz jigheads with 6lb test line and ultralite rigs. Sometimes a true brute would latch on and always break off.. leaving U wondering how big it really was and why r we not using heavier outfits! What a blast. Sometimes we'd pick up bonus sheephead at the same time; they fought well too.You could look down into the clear water and see all of the smallies below near the bottom. They would hit almost anything we threw at them. And no gobies. All fish were c&r, saving the trout. I know the smallies are still there though maybe not in the huge #s. In the really shallower waters, 10ft or less, you would invariably pick up smaller young bass (4-7in).With no gobies. We've caught them since the gobies arrived in september trolling, flatlining with jointed shad raps and such just outside of the Ginna plant and that general depth level along the lakeshore. Nice ones. But not the crazy pre- goby spring time fishing.....
  18. Indeed. I have often posited the notion of jigging for lakers in the Big O. Especially when you often see them "paving the bottom" in depths sometimes 300fow or more. And not in a really small boat. Just stop trolling on a calm (or near calm) day out there and when we are marking them by the hundreds. Rig up something with some good weight to get lures down with some braid or flouro and give it a go. Absolutely love jigging for them on the Fingers, as they put up a much better fight "still fishing" than trolling. Plus they seem to be resonably easy to hook up to. And there r much bigger lakers in Ontario. But, alas, as I am always on someone else's boat, I never get the chance to try it. Usually just get some "oh yeah " response from the captain and other crew! Go for it man, and post any more good (or not) results.....
  19. fishkiller 16......Whoooooeeee!! Nniiiiicce...! Hope U really didn't "box" all those.....
  20. There r some nice ones caught in the main lake incidentally while seeking salmonids or bass occasionaly. See..... unexpected catch at Hughes
  21. What a great day of fishing!! And your first tiger musky... ! Congratulations! BTW, not nearly the degree of your "first timer deal", but exciting because of it's unexpectedness to me. Last week I caught my first spotted bass. In Shasta lake in California. As far as I can be sure, they don't exist in NY. They have become the most numerous bass specie in that lake, outnumbering the plentiful (and bigger) largemouths, and also smallies. Several were caught all over the place. Always really cool to catch a "new to me" fish .But I had not been targeting at all....just trolling and casting for whatever and those guys were willing! Again....great deal on the tiger and all else man !!
  22. Swwweeeeet! Plenty of those guys (healthy largemouths) in Sodus, too........
  23. Really, REALLY Nnniiiiicce......!!
