Not a stupid question. Look behind the helm. If it has hoses it's hydraulic. If you see a cable it's mechanical. If you have the belt driven pump it's power assisted.

Check the hull to deck joint behind the rub rail. My new Baha leaked into the cuddy after I sealed the winshield and it was that joint. Took a year to find it.
