  1. If the holes in the top of the gunwhale are factory recessed rod holders (can 't tell from the pic) and are angled toward the back you can use Cannon gimbal mounts with low profile swivel bases and mount the downriggers that way.Mine are exactly that way and it works perfectly. It also allows you to take the riggers on and off just lifting them out for security purposes or storage. You can also use pedestals to increase the height if needed (not needed on my rig) Pic 1 - the components upper middle and right are the Cannon gimbal mount and the low profile swivel base on the lower left is a pedestal for increasing height if needed Pic 2 - the mounted downrigger on the gimbal and swivel base Pic 3 not a great photo but gives you the idea of how mounted - I have 2 sets of therecessed rod holders so I can position the downriggers closer to me if fishing alone and run the dipsey holders at the back
  2. Congrats on a great Finger Lakes laker Bruce. Thanks for the pic John. Looks as though the winner ate one more sawbelly than the 2nd place fish Some nice ones caught.
  3. Thanks guys - Jason Actually he pointed out several features of my MERC motor (even internal stuff) and prop that I wasn't even aware of and went over servicing specific things in it ....unreal. Best of all he said he was really impressed at the top end speed with 4 big guys in it and with all the equipment in the boat (47 mph) which I thought was pretty neat for a Yammy guy to say (even his motorcycles are Yammy's)
  4. Hermit got it right in his comments above Justin.....don't let the stuff get ya down bud. - even the hardcore trout and salmon folks enjoy your posts . Les
  5. Great reply post Dave. You sound as though you are very thorough about things and you'll get it together out there paying attention to detail. The reason I have a problem with Vanish is that it s a weak line especially knot strength. The Seaguar is time tested and is quite strong without problems for me. I have also had good luck with some less expensive stuff called Vicious so I use that in a pinch as well but I threw out about 12-15 spools of Vanish (various tests) recently some of which were unopened.
  6. I think Ed gave you some real good advice. Although frustrating sometimes....having a "familiar" boat is worth reconsidering...."new" or "different" is not always what it is cracked up to be and can as frustrating or more so than getting your own "nest" in order....worth the money to have someone used to messing with it take a look as Ed said may be something simple but not obvious and could be inexpensive as well. Don't "throw the baby out with the bath water" this early
  7. WTG Kade and very encouraging report on the fishing it sounds as though once this lamprey situation stabilizes the fishing will be really great for the "big boys" out there.
  8. Thanks Mike best of luck fishing this week.
  9. Dave, First of all you are doing a lot right despite the results the fish were very finicky yesterday and we had to work like heck with minimal results too Ditto on the 10 lb test fluoro (not Vanish though) and the ball bearing swivels etc. I would try running 1 dipsey at 200 ft out and the other at 300 (if out deep enough) out and troll 2.5 to 3.0 and consider running small to medium spoons behind the dipseys with and without the flashers or spinney and keep messing with your speeds while doing "s patterns" so that the outward and leeward sides alternate speed wise and are not constant as they would be in trolling a straight line or diagonal. You didn't mention downriggers but yesterday our action came on sliders which suggest they may want action and short leads perhaps (rainbows and landlocks anyway). Normally I run relatively short leads on my dipseys but I would consider stretching them out to15 or 20ft with just the spoons behind the dipseys and hand line the fish to see if they are just "shy" My hunch is that the lighter fluoro may give the lures better action too as it is a little less "stiff"and you may even hook up with a brown too. If after lakers try getting down to the 100 or so level (if you don't have riggers put a three way swivel on one of your wire rigs and a 24 -32 oz sinker and use cowbells and a peanut or Spin n glow a couple feet behind it just off bottom and at the levels you're marking the deep fish (e.g. 100 ft down)
  10. He would have a VERY large family Ed ......and some funny looking relatives as well
  11. Still have company or probably would be out there too....good going Mike....just great to be out on such a beautiful day.
  12. Geez and here all this time I was thinking that tiller control was the latest technology
  13. I agree with Wes Ed....don't give him what he wants (to bug you) He obviously has some "issues".
  14. We launched from Sampson at about 8 AM. On board were two friends from Michigan and a retired former VP of Yamaha Outboard division (in my Merc driiven Whaler no less ). We dropped in 6 lines - a couple downriggers with sliders and spoons, 2 wire dipsey rigs one with a wonderbread flasher/fly and one with green and glow E chip flasher and fly a 250 copper with dipsey and echip flasher off inline board and a 6 color leadcore with stickbait weighted with 2 oz weight. Before I had all the lines in the port side downrigger fired with a rainbow jumping wildly with a great Lakes Firetiger spoon (slider) in his mouth. Took his pic and returned him and he took off great. We marked a lot of fish that looked like lakers suspended off bottom and some fish up higher (50-60 ft) in 88 to 130 ft out in front of the chute but no takers despite messing with them at various speeds turns etc....just not interested. Went south against the SW wind which had some rollers initially and we went about even with the barge on east side going north marking fish sporadically along the way and again no takers. Trolled deeper and changed out everything ran 2 coppers, 2 downriggers, 2 dipseys off boards, 2 dipseys off sides still nothing. Ran out deep just south of barge in 470 ft water and connected with 5 lb landlock that jumped 4 times and even skipped across the water trying to shake the hook (on 8 ft.slider....again on a Great Lakes spoon (green and yellow KW with white underside) released him at side of boat unharmed. Decided to try Seth Green rigs out deep so two 5 leader rigs at sides with small to medium spoons after about an hour of up and downs with the rigs had the drag go out and 3-4 lb rainbow on first leader (about 70 ft. down on deeper rig). After lengthy time reviving at side of boat fish released and he slowly swam off. The entire time as we went north each time the grass got worse and worse. A few "patched" out in the middle but much better than at about the 100 ft or so along the east side. We spent quite a bit of time clearing the lines from grass but the fleas were minimal even on the braid, leaders or mono. We had one other hit on the rig out deep but gone almost immediately and that was it. Quit at 3 PM. Had a great busting each other and a few practical jokes some at my expense too . Previous to arriving at Sampson I told the guys that the launch should be "quiet" as the season is winding down at the park and nothing much going on there. When we pulled into the park just before the museum the place had hundreds (if not thousands) of cars about 12 very large (circus size tents) and hundreds of people milling around with dogs and security people directing traffic,,,,some MAJOR dog show going on.....of course I heard about how nothing much went on at the park throughout the day Only goiot the chance for one fish pic and it was of the smallest rainbow. The landlock was colored up but no chance for pic.
  15. Erskin I believe the SAFE Act specifies that detachable magazines can have only 7 rounds I do not think the idiots that came up with it thought about tubular magazines nor did they evidence much if any understanding of firearms in that so-called piece of legislation.
  16. Cool Mike....nothing like breaking them in early and when the weather is nice.

    Canandaigua 9/24 & 9/25

Thanks for the report Ted. The north end and west side has been tough this season compared with years past. Those darned fleas don't help matters either. Hard to tell whether these night time temps will bring down the water temps quickly enough for the feas to dissipate by the Seager tournament or the FLTA tournament on Canandaigua. - if the wind is down it may be a "jiggers" day and tough trolling based on recent results for most of us. I still wish I were going to be here for it but I'll be on my way to LA right then (driving). Hopefully the fishing will be good when I return. I'm hoping to have a free day to go for the tuna off the coast of Mexico but not sure at this point. Keep after them Ted and good luck.
  18. He noted above that he is limited to an 8 pound capacity for his clamp on riggers.
  19. Good report John. Sure wish I could get after them too....heading for California (driving) soon so it will have to wait until I get back. Good luck with it. Les
  20. Beautiful day to be out there Ed! I envy you. I was cleaning my patio pavers all day
  21. Nice going and great fish....once again persistence pays off
  22. Some folks also run heavy test braid which cuts through the water better than the wire but I don't use it so I'm not sure how it holds up.
  23. In that case either one but trolling fast you're still going to get blow back but it isn't the end of the world either... watch your fish finder if you have one and adjust downward a bit.
  24. Torpedo or shark weights are the best to minimize blowback.
