  1. Good report John. Sure wish I could get after them too....heading for California (driving) soon so it will have to wait until I get back. Good luck with it. Les
  2. Beautiful day to be out there Ed! I envy you. I was cleaning my patio pavers all day
  3. Nice going and great fish....once again persistence pays off
  4. Some folks also run heavy test braid which cuts through the water better than the wire but I don't use it so I'm not sure how it holds up.
  5. In that case either one but trolling fast you're still going to get blow back but it isn't the end of the world either... watch your fish finder if you have one and adjust downward a bit.
  6. Torpedo or shark weights are the best to minimize blowback.
  7. If you go the nail polish route use acrylic (hardner) nail polish top coat over it for increased durability
  8. If it were me I'd be fishing Owasco because it is a great little lake and has some big fish in it and you can cover a lot of the lake in a short time increasing your odds of catching. I'd launch at Emerson Park at the north end and troll south at about 40-75 ft down over whatever with medium/small spoons off downriggers and also flashers and spinneys/fly off dipseys. trolled medium fast 2.5-3.0. You should connect with rainbows and lakers at the least. If you fish Seth Green rigs don't be afraid to troll right down the middle of the lake with a mixture of spoon sizes.
  9. Yes even my 18 is that way. I had a guy do a new acrylic mooring cover for my Whaler a couple years ago and he quoted me the price over the phone without actually seeing the boat. I later left the boat off to be done and when I came back for it he said "man...you got me price wise on this job....that boat is the size of a 20 footer".
  10. Welcome aboard Fishn4. Best of luck to you.
  11. Cool story Rick.....the probabilities connected with that can't even be calculated Another great example of one of the unexpected aspects of fishing that keeps us all in the game.
  12. Yes Mike I fished with Jason Theresa and Scout We had a good time despite the conditions. I'm sorry I didn't get the chance to connect...we were right under the gun time wise at the weigh in and it got kinda hectic there for a bit. Hopefully in the near future. Unfortunately I'll be in California during the next one on my home territory (Canandaigua). Your win really pointed up the importance of being persistent as well as being flexible in your approach with adverse conditions....My hat is off to you and your teamates for pulling off a good win. The general results also highlighted the fact that there is an over abundance of very small lakers in the lake....some of them took on lures half their size Likewise John (Nautitroller) and that was one heck of a smallie you had....rivaled many of the trout weighed. I think the general results also pointed up the difficulty of getting really big trout from Keuka these days (vs. the "old days") but I was also encouraged to see at least one nice landlock and a few rainbows. It probably also speaks to the fact that some very experienced and accomplished fishermen were at it.
  13. Congrats Mike ...everyone really earned their fish yesterday.....tough conditions and tough bite for most. Here is what the water looked like for those of you who didn't fish
  14. Good luck Nick....must be tough selling your "baby" What's next an aircraft carrier for Seneca?
  15. Go get em Andy. I'll be joining you soon but only part time
  16. Ed (at least I didn't say "some guys in a nice big Starcraft didn't do as well") Well Justin already understands how fickle and wild Seneca can get
  17. Nice going Al Leave a few big ones for next years derby will ya? Good thing you went yesterday that wind is really cranking this morning.
  18. Happy Birthday Hank! You can take comfort in knowing the rest of the body is the third thing to go.... Great "selfie" by the way
  19. Sounds as though you did OK from whats been reported happening out there the last few days. It sure has been more difficult between the weeds and fleas in most places. Once these water temps drop down we should be seeing more action and hopefully less fleas but the weed thing is a big question mark in my mind, I don't remember them being this bad in years past for so long.
  20. I think it should be noted that the whole idea is hypothetical and not a current reality so nobody should be getting bent out of shape about it at this point. If it were to ever happen I'm sure NYS would be the first to regulate it and require an expensive commercial license requirement making it unprofitable from point one. Discussions of various topics on here can be productive and informative but when the emotions get involved things can deteriorate quickly and can detract from the quality of the information and discussion. Maybe we should step back a bit and relax on this one.
  21. Nice video John. A lot of good things happening in it.One thing really worth noting is the use of spinning rods and reels for tuna. They are easier to cast and use in a variety of ways in that situation (e.g. fast deployment jigging too ), but when have you seen folks using them on Lake O for trout/salmon lately from boats even as downrigger rods? (excluding pier fishing) I used to use them on my outriggers exclusively in the old days with 12 lb test and Spring fishing because you can cast them way out and snap them in the release much faster than letting line out from a casting type reel) You do need reels with good smooth drags for the kings though. The other thing is the emphasis on using the strength of the backbone of the rod and the transfer of power to it by gripping it in that manner rather than using the tip of the rod or the whole arc of it....very interesting video. Thanks.
  22. For trout and salmon I've made a complete slit under the gills to the back bone and leave the fish in my large net in the water until I don't see any blood coming out of the fish and immediately put on ice in the cooler...seems to work OK
  23. I hear ya. Those drags make a lot of difference in just what you are mentioning the initial hit (where the major stress is and where some drags are a problem in reacting quickly and without jerking). Although the Big Game is inexpensive line and I have even heard that the Berkeley reps favor their more expensive stuff ( gee I wonder why?) I've had very good luck with it in various test strengths without breakage and I used the forerunner of it (Hombre) and XT as well with good success for many years in both the fresh and saltwater environments. I think that faith in your equipment is important and especially line and drags. My particular system may not be for everyone in that sense and again I believe whatever works and you have experience with it and faith in it that is what is important. Everyone looks at it from different perspectives and hopefully we all learn by sharing our experiences with each other and I may switch back from this approach if I find there are unforseen problems or it isn't working but for now it seems to work for me.
