  1. OK-- I'm tired of freezing my a** off and I'm ready to give up some mobility and get a shelter. I fish with two adult kids and sometimes my wife comes too, so a flip isn't gonna work. Looking for something that is readily portable, moveable and storable. I'm not brand oriented--Shappell, Frabill, Clam, etc. Opinions? Thanks, Chas
  2. My ole Daddy's wisdom: A fartin' horse never tires--A fartin' man's the man to hire.
  3. Nuts, 1. Excellent municipal multiple launch ramps-car/trailer parking in Penn Yan. Take Route 14A to to 54A- go south one block, turn east on Keuka St- go to the end of the street, turn right on Water St and there you are. 2. Keuka Lake St. Park-- launch ramps and car/trailer parking. Take Route 54A to park entrance on east side of lake, just before Branchport. Good luck, Chas
  4. Welcome Mark, What part of Michigan are you from? I started life in the Ann Arbor area before moving to Rochester, NY. Chas
  5. Or three less. Good work!
  6. I want Floyd King back. He was a fantastic outdoor writer. Always got it right.
  7. Welcome hydro, Today's forecast for Rochester, NY: --Winter Storm Warning --30mph winds with up to 40mph gusts --Blowing and drifting snow--10 to 15 inch accumulation --visibility about 1/4 mile with occasional whiteouts --wind chill to 10 degrees below zero How are things on Estero Island today? Chas
  8. JB, Thanx for the info. Hopefully they let the area sit for before starting the contest. Imagine all that sound and vibration would make it unfishable for quite awhile. Otherwise, the $150,000 might have been won by a deaf dink.
  9. Any idea what they used to drill all those holes?
  10. Problem is that all those deer are destroying habitat and creating a perfect situation for an uncontrollable pandemic due to massive overpopulation. How about a dose of chronic wasting disease or huge outbreak of Lyme disease in the affected areas or rampant toxoplasmosis resulting from uncontrolled feral cat populations infecting the confined herd? Once natural balance gets out of whack, bad things can happen on a large scale.

    Smelt

Back in the day, when i was a kid in Michigan, the smelt run off Lake Huron was incredible. Just south of E.Tawas, where the Au Gres River runs into the big lake, the Singing Bridge was a magnet for hundreds of cars parking on both sides of US23. During the run, cars would be lined up for what seemed to be miles and the river banks turned into an incredible mash of fishermen, fires, nets, beer cans, huge cast iron frying pans, lanterns, etc. When a run was on, the moving roar of the crowd would parallel the run of the fish and lanterns would blink on like fireflies as the netters took to the water. What an exciting time and experience to have. Been in Rochester for 35 yrs and don't know what it's like there now but I'm pretty sure it's not that way anymore.
  12. Hunted private land in Spencerport area. Saw a decent size 4pt opening day--let it pass and it was the last buck the three of us saw all season. Happily took 3 does and filled the freezer--lots of DMPs for 8A. Don't know where the other bucks were--maybe in the park--maybe not. Would like to see that 4pt grow up over the next couple of years and become a bruiser.
  13. Posters, This is the way we need to take care of each other.
  14. You shoulda seen the ones that got away! Great year!
  15. JB, So many kids are addicted to electronic media and house cattishness that they don't value the world the Good Lord made for us. Taking kids out to hunt, fish, camp, etc. exposes them to a piece of life that their peers will probably never see. The things you are and will be doing with your kids will pay dividends going forward that will enrich their lives more than you can predict. The skill sets and confidence that come with knowing how to handle oneself in nature provides a solid platform from which to live life. Congratulations, Chas
  16. Just remember to keep the wind at your back!
  17. My 8" NILS hand auger goes through 12" of ice in 15 seconds, leaving a mound of sno cone sized ice shavings. There is an attachment that mates the beast to a cordless drill. I think that arrangement would be preferable over monkeying with either gas or propane. Chas
  18. Nice pic. What a thrill for the kids. Congratulations! Chas
